Squints08 Posted December 16, 2018 at 04:20 AM Share Posted December 16, 2018 at 04:20 AM So Im currently on the fence between a Ruger Redhawk with a 4.2 barrel in 44 magnum or, a Smith and Wesson model 69 with a 4 barrel in 44 magnum. Anybody on here have any experience with either of these? My main intent is to carry it in a chest holster while deer hunting as an option for closer shots during firearm season. My muzzle loader will be my long gun. Thanks for any information.

Once they do, they're in love. It would be perfect for your deer hunt. ETA:I'm talking about the Super Redhawk. It's the big beefy version. It's the one you want. Mr. Fife Posted December 16, 2018 at 08:03 AM Share Posted December 16, 2018 at 08:03 AM I don't know what Illinois law is regarding revolvers, but if you were hunting deer in Wisconsin you would need a barrel that's at least 5 and 1/2 inches long. sctman800 Posted December 16, 2018 at 11:10 AM Share Posted December 16, 2018 at 11:10 AM IIRC or they haven't changed something it is 4" in Illinois. I do love S&W revolvers but Rugers are built like tanks and love that aspect also. I do have a Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8" in 41 Magnum and a Super Redhawk in 454 Casull 7 1/2". I do not have a Redhawk but they are also built like a tank and they are the model you need if you want a 4" barrell. Jim.
luckydawg13 Posted December 16, 2018 at 01:21 PM Share Posted December 16, 2018 at 01:21 PM I carry a Ruger BH in 41 mag with a 4 5/8 barrel for the same reason I also hunt with a M/L the B/H has a smaller frame and is lighter to carry I find it works well for me in a Cross draw holster it's also my carry gun when I'm on my hunting trips out of town I did take a buck with it last year but out of the two on your list GET A RUGER
Squints08 Posted December 16, 2018 at 01:59 PM Author Share Posted December 16, 2018 at 01:59 PM The state minimum here is 4” and I already own a Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 and a S&W 460XVR, both of which I really like and both have taken deer. They are just too big for this intended purpose. But based on all the love here it looks like I’ll be buying another Ruger. Anybody install aftermarket sights or do you just run the factory set?
