as soon as the SIM card-less smartphones connected to wifi, the first thing they did was send a file to google with the corresponding times, GPS coordinates, and barometric pressure they gathered.

All google needs to do now is filter out the times and matching GPS coordinates to figure out that you are going too fast to be running...then sell that "driving data" to the state. The state then turns around and sends you a tax bill for all your driving in Illinois...

Also...my tinfoil hat makes my scalp itch....

bbbbbuuuuttttt....

ASSume if you go to a USPSA, IDPA, or Steel Challenge match, that google is grouping all the competitors together as "gun nuts" and building socio-grams from that.

So any movement faster than a running pace is driving?

Or I could be riding in someone else's car.

They ought to tax the connected road construction companies that come out every year or two, rip up the same streets, let them sit ripped up forever, then wait until it's cold and wet to asphalt it, so that it won't set properly and will be contract-ready in the next year or two. Or the black smoke-spewing, overweight trucks that rumble over the major routes day and night, tearing the crapilly-resurfaced roads to shreds.

Hi Jeffrey,

To be clear, I do not favor this at all.

But it is a logical (to some) extension of tollway transponders, embedded GPS tracking in our phones, OnStar tracking, and other electronic systems that are in common use.

The battle is not lost, but it is going to be tough to resist. They will take the position that it is no more objectionably compulsory than requiring licence plates, which provide a visual and very public identifier for a vehicle.

I could see them doing something like they did with the tollway -- they double the fees if you don't have a transponder. In this case, some multiplier on your license plate cost if you decline to participate.

Keep voting Democrat and reap this kind of results!!!

The difference with that stuff is that it is private, rather than government, action. Private companies and individuals can do plenty that governments are not allowed to do, as far as the constitution is concerned.

Hi 2A4Cook,

True, but there is an inclination of government to adopt those technologies for its own use. Look at the way facial recognition software and license plate readers are being used by LE.

Seeing the potential for implementing a system like this would inspire the wrong kind of politicians to try to find a way to use it for any number of things. They would be content to have it sorted out years later in the courts, while collecting our money all along the way.

Just saying ..

The roads have to be government supplied but they don't have to be socialist funded, pay for what you use. (gas tax) If they dump the gas tax, eliminate the tollways, and do it without a GPS (tracking) I'm all for it. Depending what "tracking" is, if it can only report distance between the two points, I don't care. I went 10 miles today from and where to no clue, unless your drive out one side of the state and back into the other who cares.

The liberal global warming nuts are driving around in the little wind up cars and the roads are free, why shouldn't they then think college and everything else shouldn't be as well?

Without an alternative solution they are going to jack up the gas tax until we all can no longer afford to drive our fossil fuel vehicles, there will be no money for roads and they will raise the income tax.

Hungry, pay for it.

Healthcare, pay for it.

College, pay for it.

Roads, pay for it.

Drive on a toll road -- triple taxed (toll, mileage and gas taxes). Drive in private lots or roads -- unlawful tax. The only way they can make it "work" is with a GPS, and only tax you when you are on a public, non-toll road. I cannot see the Supreme Court ruling that such a mandate wouldn't violate the Fourth Amendment. It's going nowhere, and they know it. It's being floated so that dummies will breathe a sigh of relief when they dump it in favor of higher gas taxes and tolls; the sheep will THANK them as heroes for raising their taxes. I'm willing to take bets on this.

Did you read what I wrote at all, no gas, or tolls, single tax on the miles you use.

Eat two hamburgers, pay for two hamburgers....

will not comply.

Like I said, how are they going to enforce it? I can see them checking as part of emissions testing and even during a traffic stop but other than that how will they know if someone has disconnected it?

Someone said it could be built into a license plate and powered by the license plate light. This would mean having to cut and splice into your vehicle's wiring harness. This is an electric short waiting to happen. It would also make for a great excuse for a non-functioning tracker. "Well I'll be officer, check that out; the tape holding the wire for the tracker to the license plate wire fell off and the GPS wire became disconnected. I'll redo it when I get home unless you have some electrical tape on you so I can fix it now.".

Actually quite simply, cars a bought, sold, and scrapped at all times the milage is known, report it correctly on your income taxes or they will get you eventually. Maybe someone out of state might buy you car if you didn't report you milage correctly and maybe not if caught if they have to pay for your miles. Certainly in state you better make sure it's reported right when it's sold.

Of course I did. Probably should have just posted it alone, just making a point on the whole ankle-bracelet thing. You can be ok with them forcing you to allow them to track you, but it's unconstitutional and intrusive. What's next, warrantless phone-taps and bugs? Cameras in our homes? How about a mouthpiece to track how many breaths you take, or how deeply you breath, in order to impose a carbon-production tax on you?

We have to drive 120 miles (one way) into Chicago every other week for the wife's cancer treatment.

And now they're gonna tax us to do it?

They're wanting to tax you more.

Yes, you're right Mike. They already tax us at the pump. JB and the Dems are just creating another way to slip their hand into our wallets.

If you like your money, and want to keep your money ...

You MUST vote for Rauner !!

If only he wasn't using my money to murder babies...

The other devil will impose softer restrictions to murder more babies.

I too strongly do not believe in abortion. I too strongly believe that I need to hold my nose and vote for the lesser of two evils if we want any chance in heck to keep the gun rights we have, to keep taxes that are already too high from going higher..

Someone needs to invent a “signal blocker” type of device that can carried by an individual.

The devise would “block” all electronic signals within 20’ of the device - kind of like an invisible “force field”.

Turn it on the go into Privacy Mode. Turn it off to use cell phone & other WiFi devices.

No switch. $6 and up. And up and up.

Pritzker floats idea for revamped gas tax, refutes Blagojevich ties

Charging gas taxes based on how many miles people drive instead of how much fuel they burn could pump up revenues to help fix Illinois' roads and bridges, Democratic candidate for governor J.B. Pritzker told the Daily Herald editorial board.

..."Called a vehicle miles traveled or VMT tax, it's an idea worth exploring, the billionaire Hyatt hotel heir said in a Thursday interview where he also pushed for a graduated income tax, but gave few specifics."...

..."But with more fuel-efficient vehicles, traditional gas tax income is shrinking, Pritzker noted.

"In some states (such as Oregon) they have done tests recently for a VMT tax because we have more and more electric cars on the road, more and more hybrids, and because gas mileage is rising. It's only fair if you're on a road and traveling on that road that you should pay your fair share," he said.

A VMT tax "is something we should look at ... we have to careful how it gets implemented and that's why it should only be a test at this point."

Pritzker, founder of the venture capital firm Pritzker Group, wants a constitutional amendment switching Illinois to a graduated income tax. Reaching that goal could take two years and in the interim, he suggested using a system similar to Massachusetts, where exemptions to the state's flat tax are offered for low- and middle-income residents."...

This is a red herring used by Democrats to demonize Republicans as "anti-women" and to energize their brainless base, and by some conservatives to attack more moderate Republicans, seemingly prefering to have a leftist D governor than a socially-moderate R one. Folks, abortion is primarily a federal issue since the SCOTUS rewrote the 4th Amendment for political purposes in 1973. News Flash: A Republican CANNOT win statewide in Illinois without staunch Republican support AND a SUBSTANTIAL Democrat crossover vote. The Democratic apparatus knows this full well, which is why they laugh and salivate every time the Illinois R's fight over this. No offense, but if you want a very conservative state government, move to Wyoming. Illinois has historically been fairly centrist, but it's been trending farther and farther to the left. When Madigan put that budget in front of Rauner with the $60M toward abortion funding (which, of course, the state didn't have, anyway), he did it KNOWING that Rauner would have to sign it if he wanted to retain a prayer of being reelected, and KNOWING that the far right wing of the State's R's would go ape poop and attack Rauner, dividing the party.

You have to get basically all of the R votes, and a ton of D votes, to win the governorship. Taking your ball and going home on election day is precisely what the Dems WANT you to do. I'm personally pro-life, but not blindly fanatical about it. The SCOTUS rewrote the 4th Amendment 45 years ago, and that precedent has been reaffirmed and reinforced over and over. It's not going to change. The best one can hope for is that society comes to its senses and stops using abortion as a form of after-the-fact birth control.

In any event, no form of conservative-leaning change is going to come out of Illinois in my lifetime.

I would gladly pay MUCH higher taxes than participate in genocide. A vote for Rauner is a vote to participate in genocide. "Restrictions" are not the issue. It is out of the hands of the governor to make abortion illegal. The issue is that a Republican governor advanced the cause of baby murder using MY money...thereby involving me. I voted for him...which doubly involves me.

If the question being put to me is if I will sacrifice gun rights and money in exchange for the lives of babies...the answer is and will always be "NO!" End of story.

Honestly, I welcome a gun ban in Illinois. Let's see if gun owners will resist. I am 99.9% sure that they will capitulate and turn in their guns to the police without so much as a word in protestation. Do you know how I know that? Because if you'll capitulate to paying for chopping up babies and tossing their parts into a dumpster you'll capitulate to anything.

them sending me a bill in mail is slightly different then loading the trunk and taking pieces of metal to an incinerator.

It is fair to be upset about Rauner signing the bill. A no vote in the next election is the same as voting for Jaba.

Have a car with a blue tooth connection to your phone?

Then the phone knows it.

The phone could just send a signal or file to google saying that it is paired up or connected to the car's blue tooth.
