22 ammo question.

I am no expert so dont beat me up :)

it depends on whether you want to plink or accurately plink, i shoot quite a lot of 22LR. I normally pay around $16-$20 a box for bulk, thunderbolt/aguila/golden bullet and most work most of the time (except in my g44 which likes nothing except itself). They are reasonably accurate, especially out of the rifles, not overly out of the handgun but that is probably more me! You can get match 22LR but then you are in to the costs of 9mm and I would just rather shoot 9mm for the negligible difference in cost YMMV. I don't tend to buy CCI as like i said you are then into the cost realms of 9mm.

You kind of have to have a Ruger 10/22. It's one of those guns that everybody has and it's probably the most fun gun that I own. I also have a Ruger Mark IV which is still a lot of fun but not nearly as accurate for plinking small targets as the 10/22.

I have been looking to pick up a 10/22 breakdown with a magpul backpacker stock. I may wait until my kids are out of school since it fits so nicely in a backpack.

If you want to go high end you can get higher end guns or parts to upgrade others here: https://volquartsen.com/.

For ammo I shoot whatever is on sale by the case (5000rds) at TargetSportsUSA.com, usually CCI.

I like CCI, but it's a bit more expensive than the regular bulk stuff.

Definitely second getting a 10/22. Great all around rifle with tons of upgrade options.

.22 is so much fun to shoot and won't break the bank. At 25-50 yards it performs well. Ammo is light and takes up very little space if you want to keep one in your trunk or in an emergency kit.

I think everyone should have a .22, a pistol (pick your poison), a larger caliber rifle (bolt or semi), and a 12 gauge. If you can only obtain 4 guns, that's what I'd recommend you go with.

I 3rd the Ruger 10/22. As many would say, keep a nice clean rifle and you will be good to go. My 10/22 has to be different, it likes to be dirty. I get the most FTFs & FTEs right after I clean it. After about a hundred or so rounds, it gets more reliable even w/bulk. This rifle can look and shoot to your hearts desire, there are companies out there devoted to making and selling accessories just for the 10/22.

If you're on a budget, I would recommend the Savage 64F or the Rossi RS22. Not alot of accessories for these .22LR rifles compared to the 10/22 but they shoot very well for the price point.

15-20+ years ago, we used to buy this stuff by the case. You could get it for $11-$12 a brick. I know those days are long gone.

It's subsonic and accurate. At least it was back then. But for sure, you're going to get better accuracy out of subsonic ammo than that bumblebee stuff.

ETA. We were shooting bolt action target rifles. So your requirements might differ depending on the rifle you end up with.

Federal bulk pack is very good. Remington Bucket O' Bullets not as much but serviceable stuff. I prefer only copper washed /plated over bare lead ones, which I find just plain filthy to shoot and have to clean afterwards.

+1 on the 10/22. Hard to beat a proven winner. Lots of choices in a handguns from some good revolvers, the new Taurus semi-auto, and of course the two standards of rimfire excellence, the Browning BuckMark and Ruger Mk IV.

I usually just shoot what ever is cheapest, I am not worried about dime size groups at 100 yards, just fun and practice. IF you want a weapon that will shoot shorts/long/and long rifle ammo you will have to go with a manually operated one (bolt, lever actions, revolvers). Most semi autos will only operate properly with long rifle ammo. Some will work with shorts or longs but you have to manually run the bolt between shots.

The Ruger 10/22 is the best choice for a rifle in my opinion. Shoots great, easy to use, right size and a gazillion add ons and stuff you can play with. If you want a lever action, I love my Marlin 39A but I understand it is quite pricey now!

Lots of great info, thanks.actually I purchased a Henry 22 mares leg.you might ask why.it's a Henry and for a American made lever, the fit and finish is reported to be very good.I have never owned a lever.I am a big fan of Wanted dead or alive.looks like fun.because I wanted it.I went to target sports to get a idea on ammo, the options are many.

CCI mini mag 36 gr hp goes bang every time you pull the trigger. With the Federals , Winchesters , and Remingtons you hear a lot of clicks when you pull the trigger or at least you used to.

I don't know anything about the Aguila ammo. I have read that they are pretty good .

As far as accuracy goes , in my youth I have killed starlings at 100 yards with the CCI mini mags out of a Winchester model 290 semi auto rifle.

You'll have to let us know how you like it. I love their rifles but haven't bought one because I can't keep things like that nice.

.22LR: easy to find and inexpensive. I prefer CCI anything and Remington Target.

.22Long: who cares? I saw a box once and bought it, I still have it.

.22 short: easier to find the CB shorts than it is to find SV or HV .22 Short.

You'll find semi-auto rifles that shoot .22LR. You don't need to go out of your way and find ones that shoot the shorter ones.
There are some that shoot .22 short only. They command a higher price, as does the ammo.

A revolver shoots any of the above, of course.

Ruger 10/22: yes, everyone should have one. I gave mine to my sister.

I have several go-to 22's:

Browning auto 22 take-down rifle.

CZ-452 Lux bolt action with flush magazine

Remington speedmaster 241 take-down ugly duckling browning clone.

Winchester model 62 ugly duckling take-down

Marlin 39A lever-action

Remington model 24 take-down uglyugly shot-out browning clone in .22 short

I have had very few rounds of 22 not fire, and that is with a lot of different brands.

When Walmart was a place that had a decent selection of .22 ammo I bought two bulk Winchester 555 packs. It was horrible and even my 10/22 had issues with it. Winchester was very easy to deal with, they sent me a shipping label after getting lot numbers and within a month after Emailing them a copy of my receipt they sent me a check for the ammo and an extra 20%.

I ended up buying Federal AutoMatch 22 Long Rifle Ammo 40 Grain Lead Round Nose - 325 Rounds for around $20 and while it's not quite CCI Mini Mag, it's a lot cheaper. It's these:

All rimfire is going to have an occasional FTF, it's the nature of rimfire.

These are pretty good, I think I might have 1 or 2 FTF per box.

CCI Mini Mags are great but are $8/100.

These were down to about $16-$17/325.

Isn't or wasn't Federal and CCI both part of the same conglomerate?

Really no reason to buy long or short unless you have a vintage firearm that requires it. I have piles of old shorts and Kong’s and CB caps. I usually encourage my granddaughters to use it up in my grandads old Stevens model 66. I went to goodwill or Salvation Army and bought a whole box of little figurines and tea cup and things for $4. When I went to pay for them the lady asked me what I wanted them for. I told her they make fun targets for the granddaughters to shoot at the range behind the barn. She laughed and said wait a minute. She went in the back and came out with 3 more boxes full and said she was glad to get rid of them. 25 yards with a bolt rifle and a bunch of old shorts is perfect

Meaning if it was made before 1930 pay attention.
