Thanks for supporting safe gun storage

Thank you, Oak Park. Thank you for your overwhelming support (91.5%) for the advisory referendum question on the Nov. 6 ballot asking if you support the enactment of legislation requiring the safe storage of firearms.

While you obviously already understand the need for reasonable firearm regulation, you may well have wondered why you were being asked about the narrow issue of safe firearm storage and "why now?"

One of the most important goals of reasonable firearm regulation is restricting access to firearms by criminals, the dangerously mentally or emotionally disabled and minors. Two of the most significant ways in which people in these prohibited classifications obtain firearms is to purchase them and to steal them.

The most effective way to restrict the ability of these prohibited people to purchase firearms is to require Universal Background Checks (UBC) on a nationwide basis, which will weed them out prior to the purchase of firearms, and to mandate that all gun dealers at the state level require all of the documentation and specified record information of prospective purchasers necessary to accomplish that goal. Gun dealers at the state level should also be required to maintain and make available for inspection, all such documentation and specified record information with respect to every firearms purchase (which you also supported in the countywide referendum on Nov. 6). Grassroots efforts on federal UBC legislation and Illinois Gun Dealers legislation were both initiated several years ago and the real question on both seems to be, "When will they be enacted into law?"

Several months after the unspeakable tragedy at Sandy Hook, 53 U.S. senators voted in favor of UBC legislation falling seven votes short of the 60 votes required to override a filibuster. That occurred more than 5 years ago. In the intervening years, the NRA has funneled enough money to Congress to keep UBC legislation from seeing the light of day. Special interest money, however, can only subvert the will of the people for so long, particularly when 90% of the voting public has expressed its clear will that such legislation be adopted. The sad truth is that, despite growing public support for such legislation and decreasing congressional resistance, the need for both is constantly reinforced by the endless epidemic of tragic and senseless mass shootings.

Great progress has been made in the last two years with respect to state regulation of gun dealers. Last year a bipartisan majority of Illinois legislators, led by Oak Park state Senator Don Harmon among others, voted in favor of gun dealer regulation by passing HB 1697 and forwarded it to then-governor Rauner for signature, only to have Rauner veto the bill. A new bill was then crafted which addressed minor concerns of some legislators but did not change the substance of the bill. There is a strong likelihood that Governor Pritzker and a new State legislature will be more disposed to reasonable firearms regulation, so this important bill may soon be adopted into law. The county referendum question on requiring state certification for all Illinois gun dealers and increasing firearm trafficking penalties produced a 94.35% positive vote in Oak Park and a countywide positive vote of 90.5%.

With strong public support for these two pieces of federal and state legislation further restricting the ability of criminals, the dangerously mentally and/or emotionally disabled and minors to purchase firearms clearly in place, we need to focus public attention on restricting the other major means by which people, otherwise disqualified from firearm ownership, obtain access to them theft.

The most effective way to restrict the theft of firearms from the home is to require their safe and secure storage. In spite of that, little has been done at the federal, state or local levels to restrict the theft of firearms from the home. Locks on secure storage areas, gun locks, separation of firearms and ammunition, smart guns and firearm safes are a few of the ways to achieve this.

In addition to preventing theft, there are other significant societal benefits to safe and secure firearm storage, including a reduction in firearm related suicides and the accidental deaths of children.

The fact remains that there is work to be done at every level to make safe and secure firearms storage legislation a reality and that work now has a foundation upon which to build. The people of Oak Park have declared to their legislators at all levels by their vote on Nov. 6 that they overwhelmingly support the enactment of legislation requiring the safe and secure storage of firearms.

Thank you!

Now the work begins. Gun Responsibility Advocates, the local advocacy group working to reduce gun violence, will take the referendum outcome to the Oak Park Village Board and ask them to pass a safe gun storage ordinance applicable to all gun owners in Oak Park.

"Safe Storage" was the defacto way guns were prevented from being used in self defense in DC VS Heller.

There was plenty of legislation on "safe storage" at the federal, state and local level until THE SUPREME COURT RULED IT UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!!

Safe storage should mean in your home. That is assuming you don't leave the front door wide open.

To me it means 2 things.

Preventing access to firearms for self defense and relegating them to sporting purposes, therefore making it no longer a constitutional right but a privelage.

Establishing a universal registry to validate custody. They can't prosecute if they can't prove ownership.

It's pretty obvious what the gun grabbing agenda has been since NFA.

1. Make guns prohibitevly expensive to own (import ban, melt point ban, expensive licensing and storage schemes, NFA stamps, taxes, etc).

2. Universal registry (eliminates person to person sale, keeps a registry for further compliance, also adds costs to ownership)

3. Eliminating any practical application of self defense with a firearm, thereby relegating the 2nd ammendment to a privelage not a right (self defense against tyranny included).

4. Feature ban (building upon the success of #3, if guns are no longer used in self defense then their only use is for sporting).

Any gun law can be traced back to these tennents of gun grabbing.

My two things (if I lived in Oak Park and didn't have a safe or 5 ;) actually if you call the 1 gunners a "safe" 4 more.

1) buy a cheap lock case (the ruger one is on sale for 19.99 or buy the non-ruger one for 12 bucks) and put it in the back of the closet.

2) if your gun is stolen, don't report it. If they find it you have no idea how they got it out of the box and you didn't notice because it's safely locked away as required.

Oh #3, just go buy another gun.

The only purpose of the law will be to "get" gun owners. They know it wouldn't stop a single crime, and in fact will increase them. Criminals who know they won't have to face an armed victim are much more brazen and ruthless. But they will be able to put additional restrictions on law-abiding gun owners, which is their only goal. BTW, I see that the Ken Traitor :headbang1: is a member of that group. What a shock; his columns in the Oak Park Newspaper are always banging the drum the loudest to get rid of the 2nd amendment. Makes me

I trust that everyone here already has a good safe and makes good use of it.

I don't think we need more laws.

I do think that in a land of personal responsibility, everyone should be personally responsible.

Especially for and with guns.

Borrowing a bit of crude from elsewhere... the cucks 'n moms will feel safer with good reason.

So making a shiny new law in Oak Park will finally instill personal responsibility for cucks and soccer moms ?what does this say about Oak Parkians ? Are they all just stupid irresponsible people ? Their citizens must be pretty weak.

Is it just possible that, being further north and more subject to cold temperatures, cities in the northern third of Illinois are being affected by those colder climates? :ermm: :Loony:

I haven't seen any similar situations here in Southern Illinois.

Would be an inverse to New York.

Do they have a lot of hipsters and baristas in Oak Park? If so, it could be a pre-emergent Brooklyn of the flatlands...

Well, we gotta keep them somewhere....

Luckily they tend to clump together, forming recognizable pockets of infection.

Unfortunately for us they have turned out to be highly infectious, penetrating the collar counties.

So I want to stick around to hear the wailing of the soccer moms when their horrible choices catch up with them.

It won't be long now. (well, comparatively, we'll have to grit out the next term or two)

Be prepared to pick up the pieces.

Why Oak Park needs a safe gun storage ordinance

Opinion: Letters To The Editor

Tuesday, December 4th, 2018 4:22 PM

Over 90 percent of Oak Park voters approved a non-binding referendum urging passage of an ordinance requiring safe storage of guns and ammunition in Oak Park. One reason for this is guns that aren't safely stored tend to get stolen during burglaries. Some may think this never happens in Oak Park, but that is not true. Just look at the story of a shotgun, three handguns, and ammunition stolen during a recent burglary: https://patch.com/illinois/oakpark/burglar-steals-4-guns-ammo-big-screen-tv-oak-park-cops.

This is just one more example of why Oak Park voters were right to overwhelmingly approve the safe gun storage referendum.

Two armed carjackings in three days in Oak Park

Both incidents took place around 6 p.m.

Tuesday, December 4th, 2018 3:12 PM

Oak Parkers were the victims of two armed carjackings in three days, both in the early evening – one in the 1100 block of Highland Avenue and another in the 100 block of North Harvey Avenue.

North Harvey Avenue

Two Oak Parkers under the age of 18 were robbed at gunpoint while sitting in their parked and running 2018 Mazda 3 in a garage in the 100 block of North Harvey at 6:20 p.m. on Dec. 1.

The two youths were approached by three males, two of whom were described as being between the ages of 15 and 19 and a third for whom there was no description.

One of the offenders — described as a black male, about 5-9 to 5-11, 130 to 140 pounds and wearing a white and blue surgical mask and black hooded sweatshirt — opened the driver's side door, pointed a black handgun at the driver and demanded the driver exit the vehicle.

The other offender — described as a black male between 5-8 and 5-10, 130 to 140 pounds, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood up and an afro-style haircut — opened the passenger's side door, pointed a black handgun, demanded the passenger's cellphone and ordered the victim to exit the vehicle.

The three offenders then entered and fled in the vehicle in an unknown direction.

The police report notes that the first victim also left a cellphone in the Mazda.

The vehicle was recovered a short time later by Chicago police in the 200 block of North Central, in Chicago. No arrests were made.

The loss from the theft of the cellphones is an estimated $1,900.

Highland Avenue

The armed carjacking took place almost at the exact same time of day, about 6:15 p.m., but three days earlier.

The victim, an Oak Park woman, was approached by four males, all described as in their teens or early 20s, while sitting in her white 2017 Ford Escape.

One of the offenders displayed a gray handgun and told the victim to leave her purse and cellphone on the front seat. She exited the vehicle and the four offenders entered and fled.

The vehicle was later located by Oak Park and Chicago police, but no arrests were made. Police did not say where the vehicle was located in its summary report of the recovery.

The four offenders were described as black males. The offender with the gun wore a dark hooded sweatshirt with a dark vest over it.

I heard a report about one of these where the guy who got car jacked had his car returned throughly vacuumed, interior detailed, and tank filled.

I call BS on the story because the cops make a colossal mess when searching for evidence, and criminals looking to cover their tracks turn to fire, not the detailing center.
