The New Guy at Work

I work in a small office of about 50 people in the Cook suburbs. I'm aware of two other CCL holders, which is very cool. Both are awesome low-key responsible people.

A new guy started a month ago. Today I overheard him in two different very loud conversations (he tends to be loud anyway) telling people how he did his CCL training this past weekend.

I think he thinks it's cool to let people know in a round-about way that he will soon be carrying a gun around. I hope he realizes it's not a license to shoot people. I've heard him make some VERY anti-cop statements in the past.

This dude scares me.

Maybe he's one of those guys that makes up for having a small weenie by carrying a gun around. Can you tell if he's a liberal?

LOL..... I would point him to this website and make sure he reads "Massad Ayoob;s 10 Commandments of Concealed Carry" from what you describe, he sounds misinformed! And the last thing we need is a legal CCL holder running around clueless. I wouldn't miss out on this teaching moment and the opportunity to give this guy an education in the grave responsibility that comes with being a CCL holder. Who knows.. you might just save a life, his or someone else's.

I have been thinking this exact thing. I want to steer him in the right direction the best way I can. That said, I'm also hesitant to get involved with a potentially unstable person. I don't want to become a target for him once he starts carrying around his gun.

I think he might be a liberal...but not sure. He hasn't been very loud about that.

Just start calling him the FNG loudly around him. If he's going to act like a FNG then he should be called out as the FNG. Don't want to be a FNG? Stop acting like one.

I wish I knew what FNG means.

Funny New Guy????

Is he a younger person possibly lacking a little impulse control? Maybe he's just excited/enthusiastic and anxious to share without thinking about possible consequences in how he is perceived. Buy him a cuppa over coffee break & chat him up?

I have no time for people who talk anti cop, none. These folks are brave, hugely underpaid, and walk into potential sh*&storms day after day. Yeah, there are a few bad apples out there, as with any group. Thankfully, that number is a tiny fraction of a percentage point. This guy sounds like a real tool. Why does every office, no matter the size always have 'that guy"? LOL

When we're at a party or a function and we hear a group or a few folks talking anti cop, my rule is, it's time to walk away. If the function is too small to just walk away, i get a sudden upset stomach and we have to leave, right away. LOL I'm good at faking it. :)

Could be just excited about exercising his constitutional rights and not realizing that he's being a little too loud / forward. It might help to have a 1:1 chat w/ him as "gun guy to gun guy" and just recommend he tone it down around others. (e.g. "I totally get what you're saying and am on the same page, but others might not be. Just a suggestion to keep it more on the down-low"...)

Middle-aged professional. From what I hear, he's had issues with self-control in the past. I don't think anything violent, though.

Pretty much my opinion exactly. I don't necessarily trust cops, but I respect them and what they do. I harbor no ill will toward them. I'm just smart enough to know that they're not always looking to help you out. Sometimes they're feeling out what kind of crime they can charge you with. My policy is to be friendly and say as little as possible and support them where I'm able. Most are just trying to do a crappy job under crappy circumstances. I NEVER assume a cop is in the wrong when there's a police-involved shooting, for instance.

I think he's hinting what he wants for his birthday gift from you guys. A concealed carry badge or a sash which ever you deem appropriate. :)

Except for my immediate family and closest friends, nobody knows I have a CCL, UNLESS I KNOW for a fact that they are not only pro-gun, but pro-carry. I don't need or want unneeded attention. I will talk about guns, and just about everyone who knows me, knows that I am pro-gun, but CCL talk is limited until I know about them.

The first rule of fight club is: you DO NOT talk about fight club. The second rule of fight club is: you DO NOT talk about fight club.

This is my view on this matter. OP if I were you, I would just steer clear of this guy and don't even talk to this guy about guns. I would make sure your other Ccl buddies at work don't spill the beans either.

Just have your employer post one of *those* signs. That will keep you all safe! /purple Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

They already have a non-compliant sign. I am not going to tip them off on that. In any case, our employment policy prohibits weapons of any kind "on the premises"...which I'm certain is 100% effective.

The funny thing is that our head office about ten miles away is posted with the proper sign.

Oh, I'm with you on that. Being discreet is the hallmark of a stable person. Being a blabber mouth is the hallmark of an insecure jerk. I don't even show my CCL at the gun shop when buying a gun or ammo. I use my FOID. There's no reason for them to know either. Most likely, those guys can be trusted with the information and/or don't care. But, do they have a "need to know"? Nope.

Strike up a convo with him about carry. Tell him that the most widely recommended books are Mas' books, along with The Law of Self Defense by Andrew Branca. Tell him those books are like the bible for concealed carriers.....which they really are. Tell him that everyone who carries has read those books multiple times and it should be required reading.

That will hopefully lead to him buying and reading those books, and giving him a hint after he's read them that he should shut the front door about carrying, or be a bit more discrete about it.

No one should know you're carrying. You shouldn't even put a single pro 2A sticker on your car. Be the gray man.
