Tribune columnist: guns are bad, so I took a CCL class, and guns are still bad.

excerpt of the drivel:

I am reminded of that 75-year-old man who decided to confront a group of teenagers in the dead of night in a dark, isolated area of Lake County. He reportedly has a concealed carry permit, so he must have taken a similar class. His instructor likely warned that approaching a group in such a situation would not be sensible.

Instead of killing a child, he should have stayed inside his home and called 911 when he was awakened at 1:15 a.m. by a group of teens he said were attempting to steal his car from the driveway. Instead, he put himself at risk.

The teens easily could have overpowered the elderly man, taken his gun and killed him. Or what if they, too, had been armed with guns?

Certainly, he must have known the danger of going out there with a small-caliber gun to protect a car. His own life surely is worth more than that.

Hi,

What I love even more is that both the Tribune and Sun Times dropped their Comments option many, many months ago, and show no sign of restoring them.

At the time I believed -- and still do -- that it was because there were so many comments in direct opposition to the editorial decisions that put this kind of stuff out.

Imagine the comments many of us would post about their coverage of this shooting, and how we would point out the legal and moral bankruptcy of their position on 2A issues.

FWIW.

I didn't see anything really objectionable in the article. Sure she is Monday morning quarterbacking but we have done that too.

Guy should have stayed in the house. He messed up. We don't know what was going through his head though. He may have thought it was most likely someone that was lost but brought his gun just in case. Only he knows and if he's smart he's not talking. If it had gone the other way he would have been the racist dude that called the cops on a bunch of kids for having car trouble in the middle of the night.

I can say the sheriff's response time for a call of suspicious people trespassing in this area is at least 20 minutes. The shooting probably brought the cops for the village of Antioch out within about 8 minutes, 4 if there was a cop hanging out at the gas station down the way, so this thing would have been over either way before the cops got there. I can say that from living in Antioch and waiting forever for a deputy to finally show up.

I am not second guessing the homeowner. It wasn't any dark, isolated area. It was his property. I am not sure of the author's message. Be a good victim? Accept restrictions of movement on your own property? Cower in fear in your house? Has she not heard of home invasion? Did the author ever consider that the mob would have entered his house. Ultimately, the author views the mob as the victim of the homeowner's poor risk assessment. Life is full of risks. Freedom includes the ability to decide what lawful risks to take. Deprived of that ability, not only aren't we free, but are we really alive?

Can’t even imagine the feeling I would have watching out the window while criminals try to burglarize or steal my car or mess with my garage. I would be out there in a New York minute. Had my garage burglarized three times and felt sick for days each time because I was unaware or at work. I just can’t understand the rationale why it’s Ok for people to steal your stuff and not do anything to stop it.

To investigate is a judgement call. I teach don't do it. Call the police. Let insurance handle the loss.

But for a 75 yr on a fixed income with a car that insurance will not replace, I don't know but what he figured what the heck (I did use a nice word). He will go out like a man fighting the bad guys.

Not all old people have a fat retirement.

He took a gamble. He survived . He did nothing morally wrong. The kids played with fire.

Waste of effort?

Especially with her.

Her CCW class "auditing" was 6 years ago. Got a bad vibe off of her when Colleen Lawson introduced her to me, back at one of the Chucks gun's events. If Colleen has kept track, I suspect she may have regrets.

Translation: "He should've let the police shoot the kid and then we'd still be outraged because a cop shot an armed black kid."
