MY FIRST SOLO shooting sessions that got me INTO the "gun culture" were AT the University of Illinois, Chicago. In the late 70's, in the basement of a building off of Halstead street, there was a RIFLE RANGE that STUDENTS could use, at a cost of $0.02 (later $0.04) a round.Iron sighted bolt action 0.22's.... Very true. I am a retired professor from UC after some 35 years. In the old old days, after class, I used to go over to what was then called "Circle Center" and yes, down in the basement was a range where I would shoot. Seems like a long time ago...
