1911-380 Posted September 27, 2016 at 10:35 PM Share Posted September 27, 2016 at 10:35 PM This may be a really silly question; but I've only had my CCL for a few months and I guess the situation just never occurred to me before. Normally when driving, I just carry like usual on my hip. Recently went on a long road trip to southern IL and wanted to take my gun off my hip to be more comfortable while driving. Again, silly question but I had just never thought of it before. If rules say you have to keep gun concealed on or about your person, am I ok to keep my gun loaded in my glovebox during long drives? Just making sure this isn't considered not on your person anymore.
AlphaKoncepts aka CGS Posted September 27, 2016 at 11:08 PM Share Posted September 27, 2016 at 11:08 PM Transport and carry are two uniquely different things. You don't need a concealed carry license to transport so long as you comply with the transportation laws. If you mean can you "carry" in your glove box, the answer is yes. You may carry on your person or within your vehicle. I don't carry on my hip when I drive because realistically if I need to draw, I know I won't be able to in a reasonable amount of time. Have you ever tried to clear your seat belt, clear your garment, get a grip and draw while seated in the drivers seat assuming you are carrying on your right side? It's difficult. "Concealed firearm" means a loaded or unloaded handgun carried on or about a person completely or mostly concealed from view of the public or on or about a person within a vehicle. keep or carry a loaded or unloaded concealed firearm on or about his or her person within a vehicle. revile63 Posted September 27, 2016 at 11:37 PM Share Posted September 27, 2016 at 11:37 PM You would be good to go. I got pulled over on the way back North from Southern IL by a state trooper. I gave him my CCL with my drivers license out of courtesy, and he asked me where it was. I had it in the center console, and informed him of this. No other mention of it. sirflyguy Posted September 28, 2016 at 12:00 AM Share Posted September 28, 2016 at 12:00 AM Yes, but keep the trigger covered by a holster for safety. Also, the glove box is awfully far away to reach if you need the gun; a center console is a better spot. And don't keep your registration and insurance papers in the same place as the gun. Not trying to tell you what to do, but when I'm driving, I use a slide holster at my 9 or 10 o'clock - which is a cross draw for me.

I find a holster between my console and my seat, near my belt release works perfectly. I can get to it quick, it is reasonably concealed, and if I am ever ordered out of my vehicle by a car jacker releasing my seat belt is a reasonable action. I have toyed with the idea of a holster under the steering wheel but don't think it's the best choice, plus bumps my knees. To each their own.Ahhhh....the advantages of being left handed.... Oh, you're one of thooose, lol

I always have an extra holster in the glove box in case I want to have my normal firearm off-body in the car.All my firearms have a remora holster. If its not my 'typical carry' on a given day, I'll bring along its remora if I have to disarm. (I hate having to remove holsters. And I typically carry OWB. So taking off a belt in parking lot would look...'creepy'. )NEVER allow a firearm to go 'neekid'. Keep that trigger covered.
PsumGuy Posted October 1, 2016 at 05:40 PM Share Posted October 1, 2016 at 05:40 PM IMHO, on you is far better than just in the car but, don't take my word for it. Ask any FBI agent how well it works (or doesn't) to just have it in the car. They learned the hard way.
OldMarineVet Posted October 1, 2016 at 05:57 PM Share Posted October 1, 2016 at 05:57 PM It's my understanding with a CCL you can have a loaded firearm anywhere in the front seat area as long as it's concealed. For instance, it's my understanding, while driving, you can put a loaded handgun on the passenger seat next to you and just cover/conceal it with a hat, sweatshirt, etc. I think its' probable you can have a concealed, loaded firearm anywhere inside the car with a CCL, but have not personally had a need to check that out beyond the front seat area. 67vtx1800 Posted October 1, 2016 at 06:22 PM Share Posted October 1, 2016 at 06:22 PM If the gun is in the glovebox, i'd want to make sure my insurance and registration were somewhere else. Would want some itchy finger to panic and shoot me while getting those out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
