Here's some good news for us north suburb shooters. Work has started on the gun range in Niles.

Windows have been bricked over on the building and there are a lot of workers there.

It's going to be called Revolve Rifle and Range.

They have set up a website. www.revolverange.com . Check it out and sign up for the newsletter.

Hooray !!!

Signing up for their newsletter is a great idea, let the owners know that we will support them, (as long as they are fair in their pricing🤔).

Know what I don't see in the mock up pics? Scary black guns.

Will be interesting indeed; this is a stones throw from my office so if the range is reasonable then I'd have to visit quite a lot I have been wanting to get on the range more than my current 1-2 times a month; this would make doing that stupid easy. But if they come out with retarded rules that'd take all the fun out of it, Hoping for more of a On-Target less of a MegaSports when they open.

As a 60 year resident I thank all who supported this range. I can practically walk there. Hopefully they have a resident discount !!! Kidding....but not really ! There used to be a few close ranges. Gabby Hartnett, Bells..now we are getting more choices again. Maxon has been my go to and I will continue to support them too.

Any idea on an projected opening date?

I met with one of the owners last Saturday. Spring 2017.

Website looks nice. If their images are of the actual space, I like it. It's over an hour away from me but I'd check it out once or twice.

Images are renderings of the proposed finishes. They are reinforcing the concrete walls right now, still very dirty.

Are you going to be the in-house gun smith?

I never discussed it with them. Right now I am trying to arrange to document their construction process and perform interviews with the owners for my website. Once it is complete I hope to add their location into the rotation of ranges where I train students. We've never discussed the gunsmith idea.

No scary black guns because you can't sell those in Niles (https://www.municode.com/library/il/niles/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=COOR_CH66OFMIPR_ARTIXWEFI_S66-235PR). Interestingly, possession/use of them is fine.

My office is also a stone's throw away. Do you happen to work in the microphone business?

Weird ordinance. They define "Assault Weapon" as:

Any semiautomatic action, centerfire rifle or carbine that accepts a detachable magazine with a capacity of 20 rounds or more.

What's interesting is that the ban is based on magazine capacity, but it doesn't actually ban the magazines themselves. If a gun can accept the magazine, then the gun itself is banned. Thus, even though you can get 10 round magazines for an AR, it doesn't help because the AR is still capable of accepting 30 round magazines. What an asinine law.

Interestingly, the law also has several restrictions on handguns which violates preemption. Any semi-automatic handgun that can accept a magazine that holds more than 20 rounds (thus all pistols with a detachable magazine) is an Assault Weapon. As is any handgun that is based on a rifle, such as an AR pistol.

Going even further, this ordinance is completely out of date. Sec. 66-227 prohibits concealed carry with no exception for FCCL holders. Sec. 66-228 prohibits discharge of a firearm without any exception for lawful self defense. My suburb has a "no carry" law and a "no firearms discharge" law, but it provides an exceptions for people who are licensed to carry and for lawful self defense respectively. So Nile's law is strange.

Oh, even more interesting is 66-231:

"It shall be unlawful for any person to sell, give, loan or furnish to any minor under the age of 18 years any gun, pistol, rifle, revolver or other firearm within the corporate limits of the village."

So I guess you can't take your kid to the Niles range.

66-232 is even worse! A strict reading it prohibits Nerf guns because it's a "gun or object from which a projectile is propelled." Also, don't teach your kids to cook because that chef's knife is longer than 3" and illegal for a minor to handle.

Yikes.

I'm meeting one of the trustees of Niles at his restaurant next week. I'll bring this up. He and I chit chat sometimes and I was under the assumption this ordinance was being repealed.

I know what building you speak of, most beautiful building in all the suburbs I have been to except for those ugly no carry signs on the door. I work across the street from there. It should be easy enough to get to after work so long as the Metra doesn't mess things up.

  • 5 months later...

Has anyone heard any news about the status of the Niles Range? There is a fence across the front of the building, the driveway and the small side areas. The fence does not go all around the building.

It's different than when they were working on the walls. And there hasn't been any activity there for several weeks.

I hope all is still OK.

Haven't heard anything and sure doesnt look like much happening unless they are building out the interior. That place was a car place prior and I was inside it many times. It was a dump and a maze. Very old interior with lots of interior dividing walls. The car place went belly up overnght so I am sure they got it for a song. The interior really was scary.
