Black Flag Posted August 2, 2019 at 01:55 AM Share Posted August 2, 2019 at 01:55 AM https://persistlist.org/event/town-hall-preventing-gun-violence-in-naperville-aurora/ On Sunday, August 4, we are hosting a town hall at the 95th street Naperville Public Library from 2-4 PM. The objective of this town hall is to facilitate an open discussion on how to prevent gun violence in the Naperville/Aurora community. This town hall will not address any issues such as the amendment of any gun laws or gun rights. Our discussion will only focus on the implementation of gun safety in the community. Featuring: Lauren Underwood (Congresswoman) Stephanie Kifowit (State representative) Laura Ellman (State senator) Mimi Cowan (Will County board) Kevin Coyne (Naperville City Council) FREE ADMISSION

Euler Posted August 2, 2019 at 02:09 AM Share Posted August 2, 2019 at 02:09 AM Remember that "gun safety" is the Newspeak code word for "gun control," so the sentence actually reads: This town hall will not address any issues such as the amendment of any gun laws or gun rights. Our discussion will only focus on the implementation of gun control in the community.
ChicagoRonin70 Posted August 2, 2019 at 04:25 AM Share Posted August 2, 2019 at 04:25 AM People who live there should show up en masse and force the discussion on actual firearm safety, such as how to handle firearms correctly and how law enforcement and the state's attorney's office should be much more restrictive on allowing bail for those charged with unlawful use of firearms or who are prohibited from possessing them but are arrested with them anyway. To me, that is EXACTLY gun safety. If many people did that, every time this came up, I would bet it would throw a huge bag of monkey wrenches into the works. TomKoz Posted August 2, 2019 at 08:40 AM Share Posted August 2, 2019 at 08:40 AM Tell them to ask the leaders of the umpteen States that have Constitutional Carry. Those States don’t seem to have “gun violence” issues.
Raw Power Posted August 2, 2019 at 09:41 AM Share Posted August 2, 2019 at 09:41 AM It's a Sunday, so there's no "I have to work" excuse. If you're nearby, show up and ask for real "gun safety". Perhaps ask if people would like to see how to properly unload/clean/store? Offer to take people shooting. Talk about the 4 main rules, and ask the elected officials if they know them and can speak to their importance. etc etc...
Jeffrey Posted August 2, 2019 at 01:00 PM Share Posted August 2, 2019 at 01:00 PM I usually try to make any of these chit shows that are in Naperville. Unfortunately we are out camping this weekend. This panel would be a fun one to mess with. Essentially this is just a Mom's meeting. ETA: This event should have been posted sooner at places near by like Megasports, JR's, Naperville Sportsmans, etc.

Euler Posted August 3, 2019 at 04:24 AM Share Posted August 3, 2019 at 04:24 AM diminish - make smaller in size or appearance So they're going to miniaturize highly lethal firearms? Cool! It'll make them easier to carry. Also, the noun is "diminution," not "diminishment."

They’re just being used by adults to push an agenda they truly don’t understand. And besides, miniature guns would be cute.
domin8 Posted August 3, 2019 at 04:51 AM Share Posted August 3, 2019 at 04:51 AM How come those high school kids aren't suspended or expelled from school? The white outline of the hand inside the blue one is made to look like a gun. Kindergartners get suspended for holding sticks the wrong way. Raw Power Posted August 4, 2019 at 12:38 PM Share Posted August 4, 2019 at 12:38 PM A good question to ask these folks as they get whipped into a frenzy; is how they would prefer to defend themselves and a loved one against a mass shooting. Maybe they plan to get bulletproof cell phones?
Euler Posted August 4, 2019 at 09:52 PM Share Posted August 4, 2019 at 09:52 PM I just got back from this. Others may post more extensive notes, but here are mine. I got there at 2pm. It had obviously been underway for a while. Oh, well. It was a large room, and it was packed. Library personnel tried to get people out of the room, because it was over the fire code capacity. They mostly weren't successful. It was a question and answer format for the panel of invitees, which included a Naperville officer named Lee, in addition to the ones named above. They really did try to keep the discussion away from talking about gun control, but there were some lapses. There were several people with "Moms Demand Action" t-shirts. There were several kids with "March for our lives" t-shirts. Willis was in the audience. She didn't say anything. Underwood asserted that national legislation is required to stop gun dealers from selling firearms to mentally ill people and criminals, because that's currently allowed. She also said that universal background checks would have prevented the Pratt shooting. Coyne tried to focus on the fact that most gun-related violence is committed by repeat criminals. He gave the example of the "assault weapons" (AK pistols) and "armor-piercing bullets" (ordinary polymer-tipped rounds) that were seized by CPD at a traffic stop, only to release the offenders the next day on $1000 bond. Cowan answered a question about arming teachers by saying that teachers can't be as well-trained in the use of firearms as cops. She has been a history teacher. She doesn't want to ruin her relationship with students with them knowing she's armed. She also said she doesn't trust herself with a gun. One question asked what panelists would do other than ban "assault weapons" to stop mass murders. A group of audience members shouted "Why not ban? Why not ban?" They were ignored. There was a group of people who had t-shirts that said "Stop the violence. Stop gun violence." I didn't see an organization name on them. They had a picture of a pistol and a map of Illinois. I think they might have been ICHV. One of them got up at the end of the program to ask why her question hadn't been read even though she submitted it twice, then proceeded to proselytize about "Fix the FOID." They had placards. Maybe they waved them outside before the even started. They didn't wave them inside. They also had handouts they tried to get people to take. Otherwise, they were ignored.
