Can an Illinois resident pick up a shotgun at Cabela's in Indiana ?

The title pretty much details my question.

I am a resident of Illinois.

I just ordered a shotgun from Cabela's online and requested it be shipped to Cabela's in Hammond, Indiana to avoid the $25.00 Cook County tax. Will I have any difficulty when I get notice that the firearm has arrived at the store, and I go there to pick it up ? I have my FOID card, and have used it to purchase ammo at the Hammond store.

When I ask this question on Google, I see " Illinois may have some restrictions " However, there is no explanation of what the restrictions are.

I thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you for the reply. I do realize that I would need to fill out the proper forms.

Regarding the Cook County tax, I did not have to pay that silly Cook County tax on the ammo I recently purchased at the Hammond store. Don't know if the same would apply to the purchase of a firearm.

Cook county can't force you to make purchases in Cook County.

You're free to make the purchases wherever you choose.

Good point.

Another question comes to my mind.

When I get the e-mail message that the firearm has arrived at the store in Hammond, do I then go there and fill out the paperwork, and wait a day before I can take possession ? Bottom line question. Do I have to drive there twice ?

Do you have to? Probably not legally, but like in IL it will most likely depend on their policy. Agree to check with them on how they handle it.

If you haven't filled out the 4473 yet, it's possible that you'll have to go twice, but you should call them and ask.

Yes, it will require two trips.

I called Cabela's in Hammond and learned that it will indeed take two trips from Wheaton to Hammond. On the first trip, I'll fill out the form for a background check, wait 24 hours, and then return to pick up the shotgun.

In hindsight, it might have been cheaper to pay the $25.00 Cook County tax.

I just proved to myself that it's never too late to learn.

I bought a pistol this spring out of cabelas hammond. Transferred it to an approved list of illinois FFL's they had. IRC $35 dollar transfer fee.

They picked it up and I did have to go twice to FFL. 1. to fill out 4473 and then 2. to return after mandated waiting period for the final transfer.

No CC sales tax or $25 gun tax and I saved $100 dollars on pistol with Cabellas price being less than what I could find it in 50 mile traveling radius cook county area. Indiana sales tax wasn't bad ether.

Illinois FFL was Borderline shooting sports (708) 304-0006 in Crete il. Small shop. Looks like they do a lot of transfers like this. There was no shipping or delivery fee. I think the FFL regularly go's across the border and gets them.

As always call a FFL and warn him you doing a out of state transfer before authorizing it. Some do not like surprise deliverys

Isn't Wheaton in DuPage county? Like it's the county seat.

Yes, Wheaton is in DuPage County. ( about 50 miles from the Hammond Cabela's store )

I realize that I could have purchased this shotgun at a lower cost, but I had a reason to go to Cabela's. I was in the market for a Beretta A 300, 12g shotgun with the synthetic stock. Cabela's had an exclusive model with a green ( Mallard ) color on the breech. The standard models are all black and are boring to look at.

I also purchased a Sig Sauer P 320 RX which was a Cabela's exclusive. ( stainless steel slide vs. all black )

Some times it's just not all about money.( especially when you get as old as me )

That's the behind the scenes info.

I have business in the Hammond area at least once a month so I have no problem buying the gun today and picking it up in 2 or 3 weeks.

I believe they hold the gun for 30 or 90 days.

Good question. In the first place, I did not realize that I would need to take two trips. Second. I will never ( if I can help it ) pay that Cook County tax, either on firearms or ammo. Third. My favorite pizza joint ( John's Pizzeria ), maker of the pizza I grew up with in the 50's , is still located in Munster. ( right next to Hammond )

So the bottom line is, I can pick up the gun I want, not pay the tax, and enjoy my favorite pizza. ( twice ) :ike:

I have to ask this question. You are in Wheaton.....how much time and gas money would you have saved by going to the Cabela's in Hoffman Estates twice.

And yes, you gotta drive to Cabela's twice. I had to make that trip (to Hoffman Estates).

Another consideration would have been to buy the gun at the Bass Pro Shop in Bolingbrook. Depending on the OP's location in Wheaton, he could be half way between the 2 stores. Bolingbrook is not in Cook County. Bass Pro and Cabela's are the same company. Going south on I355 toward Indiana, the OP would have passed Bass Pro Shop.

Good suggestion, but I believe you may have missed one point that I mentioned earlier. ( at 1:07 PM today )

That's why I went to Cabela's. I do like Bass Pro and have given them a lot of business over the years.

Thanks for your input.

I agree. I'll never pay that tax ! It's even more unreasonable on ammo, at 5 cents per round. I'll buy other items at the Hoffman Estates store, but not firearms or ammo. It's really not their fault.

Hanagan

Yeah, the 5 cents per round thing sucks... I've purchased ammo there once.

I cannot remember if I was charged a gun tax or not on a stripped lower I got from Cabela's. If I was, I chalked it up to being the same as an FFL transfer fee.
