As I understand it the nra basic pistol course gives you an exemption from day 1 of ccw training.  Now I see you can take that course online through the nra, which results in you getting a certificate of completion.

So, is my understanding correct that I can take the online nra course (seen here: https://basicpistol.nra.org/) and that this will allow me to just sign up for day 2 of a ccw course after I get the certificate?  It is an '8 hour' course.

I'm plenty familiar with handguns and handgun safety, though not opposed to more training- just generally learn better online than at a live lecture.

That is a blended learning course. Phase 1 is online, then you have to schedule the phase 2 and complete the in person training. There is no online only training that qualifies for the IL CCL training.

I understand that, what I am trying to confirm is that with this I can then go to a local training place and just do day 2 of their ccw training, and not have to take day 1 through whoever I choose for day 2.

Yes, just know that not all instructors will offer only the day 2 course, as many teach a full 16 hour curriculum that doesn't include Basic Pistol.

The NRA blended course is by itself a 2 part course. To get the previous training exemption and get 8 hours training credit you would need to complete both the online AND in person NRA basic pistol training.
These 2 phases are only to complete the training for the 8 hour exemption.
You do not get a completion certificate for NRA basic pistol by only doing the online portion.

I wish the state would come up with a CBT course that would count for the classroom portion of the training requirement.  That way you could take the course at your leisure (an hour here, an hour there) then go to the range for the quals and be done.  The state accepts CBT courses for my wife's nursing license so I don't know why they couldn't accept CBT courses for FCCL training.

FWIW, my instructor had a lot of veterans, so he structured his syllabus, so he could offer a two day course, and the vets could take just the second day.
