New Shooter

I got this text from a friend of mine the other day:

"If I have a 19 year old boy that is interested in starting to shoot handguns. Where's the best local gun range to take him? I guess what I'm askin is which place is friendly for a new shooter."

Options about where to go are welcome. I have some in mind, but it is not an extensive list.

Obviously, since this person in question is under 21, they would need parental supervision, right?

Thanks.

What area are you, or he in?

Indeed, geography would be good to know

If, by chance, it is NW suburbs, the new Fox Valley Range in Elgin has private suites where you can fire:

The benefit here of course is you're more isolated and don't have to worry about people shooting next to you thus giving you quiet time for instruction, feedback, etc.

Though I cannot comment on specifically shooting in the suite myself (just the normal range lanes), it is a nice range run by some nice people.

I'm curious if he has a FOID? I only ask because I know he would need one at Range @ 355

Yes, persons of legal shooting age (18 for long guns & 21 for handguns) must have an FOID, however, new shooters are allowed by Illinois law to attend an introductory training class without a FOID card.

New to shooting as well, Maxon is also good if you're in the NW burbs (you can get training without a FOID as well, just read their rules).

I enjoy Maxon's and consider it my home range.

From their website:

Individual Under 21

Range: You must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and unless that parent or legal guardian has a FOID card, you must also be under the supervision of a Maxon Instructor ($).Children must fit the following parameters: They must be strong enough to be safe with a firearm, have the attention span and emotional maturity to follow instructions and be a minimum of 50 inches tall.

If you are the legal guardian of the individual under 21, you must show proof of this with the appropriate court issued document. If you are unable to do so, the individual under 21 will not be able to shoot.

Rental: No

Purchase Firearms: No

Purchase Ammuntion: No

Glad you like the range. He can shoot with someone who is over 21 and with a FOID.

The private lanes are great for teaching new shooters. And FVSR has rental guns too.

Sorry, NW burbs.

Check out Article 2 in Lombard. We do Groupons for new shooters. 30 minutes of safety and handling training and 30 minutes on the range with an instructor and he'll get to shoot 25 rounds of 9mm and 25 of .38. This way he can try a semi auto and a revolver. 2 people can come so he doesn't have to be alone if he doesn't want to. :)
