rott Posted February 11, 2012 at 01:26 AM Share Posted February 11, 2012 at 01:26 AM The wife wants some pepper spray since we are not allowed the luxury of carrying a firearm for protection. What are the laws in Illinois (Rockford area) regarding pepper spray? I noticed this:http://www.amazon.com/ASP-Palm-Defender-Pepper-Spray/dp/B004WC539U But it also states that this item is not for sale in all states...kind of makes me think IL doesn't want us to have this either. Anyway, I figured the quickest way to get some idea of the laws would be to ask you fine people...can you help a fellow out?

Use it responsibly, and it will not be an issue. The discharge regs came into play due to the E2 Nightclub disaster.
Bud Posted February 11, 2012 at 02:09 AM Share Posted February 11, 2012 at 02:09 AM On one of our firtst trips out west in Grizzly country, my wife and I dec ided to buy a can of 'bear spray' which is pepper spray. Cabela's sells two sizes, the normal size which i think held 12 punces and the industrial sized weapons grade giant size. We have carried it on all of our trips even when we go places where there are no grizzlies but there may be other critters who may be dissuaded by a quick shot. Being of an inquiring scientific mind, I pulled it out on a back trail at Yellowstone a couple of years ago and let 'er rip just to see how far the spray would go. Proving once again, the old sailor's advice of "don't vomit over the side up wiund", iI learned two things; 1) it would actually travel probably further then 40 feet and the 2) the cloud coming back in the breeze is perfectly capable of taking you, the wife and the Jack Russel terrier we have right out of the fight. I am serious, a least a stream of forty plus feet:

Xwing Posted February 11, 2012 at 02:37 PM Share Posted February 11, 2012 at 02:37 PM We discussed this topic a little while ago. It is legal to own and to possess. It may not be legal to use, depending on the circumstances (e.g. inside in Chicago). But if you get to the point where you have to use it, that is probably the least of your worries. Tompo Posted February 11, 2012 at 03:36 PM Share Posted February 11, 2012 at 03:36 PM As others have said, it IS legal to own and carry--I carry one all the time, esp. when walking my dog late at night. You just need to be judicious in it's usage.

Skorpius Posted February 12, 2012 at 05:28 AM Share Posted February 12, 2012 at 05:28 AM Being in Chicago, I have a small one I sometimes carry if I'm riding the train. I also carried a 4" Cold Steel Ti-Lite knife, but it was sadly lost in a boating accident.
Joeyl Posted February 12, 2012 at 05:38 AM Share Posted February 12, 2012 at 05:38 AM Some brands also have a gel formula. Helps prevent blowback which is very painful as Bud pointed out.

Danielm60660 Posted February 12, 2012 at 02:46 PM Share Posted February 12, 2012 at 02:46 PM I can't quote the regs, but I think you get into legal issues when you start talking about mace. It's more regulated. Someone here will know the details.DM

It uses a pyrotechnic charge to shoot a gel at very high velocity. It is also small and light. I carry one, I gave one to my daughter, and several friends. 2 shots. * Internet word. Jeff Johnson Posted February 13, 2012 at 02:33 PM Share Posted February 13, 2012 at 02:33 PM I've used Fox Labs pepper spray. pretty wicked stuff. I got a little blowback when I hosed a guy that jumped on my truck running board and reached into the cab when I was stopped at an intersection. I keep a canister over the visor. I don't know what he was trying to do, he was either reaching for the shifter or the keys but I hit him with a full blast in the face at close quarters. The last time I saw him he was rolling in the street and screaming like a little girl. I drove a couple blocks and pulled into a church parking lot to fight the effects of the blowback on myself. kurt555gs Posted February 13, 2012 at 03:42 PM Share Posted February 13, 2012 at 03:42 PM No blowback with the pepperblaster. Its the best choice for Illinois residents. Certainly better than a pointy comb or a tounge depressor. And far better than an aerosol powered pepper spray. That's the same stuff I had, used it in a similiar situation spraying it out of the car. Thank God I had sunglasses on.Still was very painful even after using the Sudecon I had in the car. mstrat Posted February 14, 2012 at 01:27 PM Share Posted February 14, 2012 at 01:27 PM Thanks for the information...does anyone have experience with the ASP Palm Defender series?I carry that one every day now. I haven't tested it yet, so can't speak to its efficacy. But I really like the form factor. Sits well in my pocket and stays out of the way. The safety on it is better and easier than others, imo. kurt555gs Posted February 27, 2012 at 07:26 PM Share Posted February 27, 2012 at 07:26 PM mstrat. I really think you should look at the Kimber Pepperblaster. It solves a lot of issues that are inherent to pepper "spray". * Support unlicensed open carry in non home rule Illinois areas! *

Never had to use the heat cartridge but I carry one and have used the training cartridge. It's nice and small, has a positive and easy to use safety, and gives you several blasts before you run out. xmikex Posted February 29, 2012 at 06:21 AM Share Posted February 29, 2012 at 06:21 AM When it comes to Pepper Spray, FOX Labs or ALS' Top Cop are all I recommend. Keep in mind that a determined attacker can still fight under the effects of pepper spray and that for the size of can most of us are going to carry, empty the entire can on the badguy(s).
