Illinois is such a mess! It took 9 weeks for my friend to get his FOID renewed. He applied 2 weeks before it expired. You can't apply more than 30 days ahead of the expiration date. If he had applied 30 days in advance he still would have been without his "privileges" for 5 weeks. What if this happens while having a CCL? Will it be suspended even tho you did everything correct?

If renewals for FOID/CCL are submitted prior to the expiration date, they remain active until the new cards are received.

I just read this on a different post.

"Renewal applications shall be approved or denied within 60 business days, provided the applicant submitted his or her renewal application prior to the expiration of his or her Firearm Owner's Identification Card. If a renewal application has been submitted prior to the expiration date of the applicant's Firearm Owner's Identification Card, the Firearm Owner's Identification Card shall remain valid while the Department processes the application, unless the person is subject to or becomes subject to revocation under this Act. The cost for a renewal application shall be $10 which shall be deposited into the State Police Firearm Services Fund".

The problem is that he was unable to buy a firearm or ammo during this time because 2 different stores wouldn't accept his expired FOID.

Molly, the issue was that none of the gun dealers would accept his expired card to allow him to buy a new handgun or ammo for his existing ones.

His card wasn't expired, the gun dealers were wrong.

Plus the amount of FOID/CCL holders who always want to buy something after a addy/name change or a renewal/lost card is unbelievable!

As for the 30 day window i do believe that is incorrect.

I haven't had to renew yet, but my understanding is its two months maybe earlier you will get the renew button!

Lots of reading here too, take some time to read the massive amount of FOID renewal posts and the timeframes involved.
Plus there is even more about the right denied mindset within many of those posts.

Heres a little interesting read for everyone since I'm here, posted 17 April 2019. Just gotta chuckle on the interwebs!

Hah, this is Illinois, what do you think? I was told by a prosecutor/instructor that your card/status remains active if you apply for renewal before it expires (so you dont have to start from scratch); however, you cannot carry until you get a new card. If caught you will be arrested. Also in this process they are updating FOID cards so the numbers match with the CCL numbers. And while the FOID card update is being processed you cannot buy a gun.

Got to just love this state. in Indiana you can get lifetime carry permit at age 18, and lower crime rates, and lower taxes.

Based upon law below, I would also expect renew button to go active at least at 60 days if not 90.

(430 ILCS 65/13.2) (from Ch. 38, par. 83-13.2)
Sec. 13.2. Renewal; name or address change; replacement card. The Department of State Police shall, 60 days prior to the expiration of a Firearm Owner's Identification Card, forward by first class mail to each person whose card is to expire a notification of the expiration of the card and instructions for renewal.

As did mine. The renew button popped up May 1. Mine expires August 1.

Received FOID renewal notification today informing me of FOID expiration on 8/1/2019.

What about firearm purchases made between when you applied and when you receive your renewal, assuming no address or name changes? From what I gather, your FOID is still active, all you did was submit an application for renewal.

Obviously, if there is a name or address change, or you have passed the original expiration date and are awaiting your renewal, then yes, that's a problem.

Hate to be a pessimist but I cant see walking into a gun store and attempting to buy ammo or a firearm or even handle a firearm with a FOID that has an expired date on it will get you anything but the door.
Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

All the store clerk has to do is call the ISP FOID number to verify your card is good.
