Here's how the 2020 Democrats differ on gun control

What could gun legislation look like if a Democrat wins the presidency?

...

So far, Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., has carved out one of the most ambitious lanes in the gun policy debate ahead of 2020 -- a plan he calls "the most comprehensive gun violence prevention plan of any candidate for president in decades."

Booker's recently announced policy would require all gun owners to acquire a license through the federal government. Currently, 16 states have similar laws to varying degrees.

(MORE: Cory Booker unveils plan to address gun violence, if elected president)

...

Former Obama administration Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro also supports gun buybacks, which he acknowledged "have had mixed success," but said are "good policy" in some circumstances. Castro, who is from Texas, also supports universal background checks, limiting the capacity of magazines and an assault weapons ban. He highlighted the importance of mental health and research in a recent CNN town hall.

...

(MORE: Kamala Harris proposes executive actions to curb gun violence)

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., has also announced her intentions to act on gun control, which she said she would enact within her first 100 days through executive action.

Harris would require near-universal background checks to be run by people selling more than five guns in a year and revoke the licenses of gun manufacturers and dealers that break the law. She has also talked about renewing a 1994 law that banned assault weapons but expired in 2004.

...

For Klobuchar, judging gun control legislation is about what would "hurt [her] Uncle Dick in the deer stand," a perspective that comes from her state's value of the outdoors, including hunting and fishing, Klobuchar said in a CNN town hall in February.

...

But those factors don't keep her from supporting universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons, she said. In the past, Klobuchar has applied the same rule about her Uncle Dick to other laws, like preventing people on a terrorist watch list from buying guns.

"Would closing off the loophole in the terrorist watch list hurt my Uncle Dick in his deer stand? Not at all," Klobuchar said in 2016.

...

In the past, the rural connection has led to criticism by some progressives that Sanders was too moderate on gun control, especially in his early career. The Vermont senator has made a point since kicking off his 2020 campaign to show he's evolved.

...

Ahead of 2020, Sanders often brings up his lengthy record to prove a different point: He has consistently voted since the 1980s to ban semi-automatic assault weapons.

...

Warren, born and raised in Oklahoma, has said that she values the rights of "law-abiding citizens" to own guns, though she's a strong advocate for gun law reform and has voted for an assault weapons ban. After the deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida, in 2017, Warren wrote letters to several major companies that invested with gun manufacturers and asked them to pressure the industry to change.

...

In an interview in February, Warren said gun violence would be qualified as a national emergency "right off the top" if she were elected.

...

Harris and Swalwell, ... have both made gun control a key part of their 2020 platforms...

...Hickenlooper signed gun control measures that required background checks for private and online gun sales and banned high-capacity magazines. Bennet also voted to ban high-capacity magazines, but in 2010 voted to oppose restricting the right to bear arms and in 2009 voted to allow Amtrak riders to check bags containing guns.

...Biden (is) a longtime advocate for gun control. As a U.S. senator, he introduced the assault weapons ban, which was signed into law in 1994.

...

For former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke, a minor switch came just a few months into the 2020 cycle, after Booker announced his proposed plan.

Asked about establishing federal gun licensing, O'Rourke initially told reporters on the campaign trail that it went "too far." But after a night of reflection, he changed his mind.

"What I think Senator Booker has done is to push us past that to seek to do even more, and I'm grateful that he's done that and I, you know, as I've thought about it, I really think that we should be looking at everything," O'Rourke said the next day on the trail.

...

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has also evolved, tumbling from an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association to an "F" -- a point of pride, she's said.

...

Gillibrand is joined by Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio, who was also formerly given an "A" rating from the NRA. Ryan shifted his stance more recently than Gillibrand, speaking out after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. He has since donated roughly $20,000 to gun control organizations.

...

Marine veteran and current Rep. Seth Moulton tweeted a photo of himself in uniform holding a military-grade rifle saying, "I know assault rifles. I carried one in Iraq. They have no place on America's streets."

...

Moulton also authored bipartisan legislation to ban bump stocks, an accessory that increases the firing rate, after the device was used in the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed 58 people in 2017.

...

... South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a U.S. Navy Reserve veteran who was deployed to Afghanistan, similarly denounced AR-style rifles.

...

"I did not carry an assault weapon around a foreign country so I could come home and see them used to massacre my countrymen," he tweeted.

Gabbard, a major in the Hawaii Army National Guard, has come under criticism for not sponsoring gun control measures that are widely supported by other Democrats in the House. But she has voted to ban assault weapons...

What the heck have I been saying all this time !!!

ETA: you want to keep your guns?? DONT vote Democrat !!

Just wait for the 2024 election. 2 of those candidates, Sanders and Gillibrand used to be fairly moderate on guns. The corporate funded antigun lobby has lots of deep pockets and will be buying off your beloved Republicans soon enough. They already did it in Illinois. You gonna vote for John "AWB signing" Kasich when he gets the 2024 GOP bid? Gun rights are in extreme danger if anyone thinks the GOP at large is your sole protector of the 2nd ammendment.

Unless you can fundraise enough to change a candidates' mind or are registered to vote elsewhere you have no control over who your next gun grabber in chief will be.

I know assault rifles. I carried one in Iraq. They have no place on America's streets

Translation: I used these guns to invade someone else's home, kick down their door, illegally imprison them because their religious beliefs are "extreme", all with no trial. This is exactly why the American public can't possess these guns.

Thank me for my service by voting for me bootlickers.

So do we vote for the most, or the least, crazy of these candidates?

And as for you, Pete and Seth: I bought you an assault rifle to carry while you were in uniform so that you could defend freedom. I did not buy it for you so you could come home and trample on our rights.

So... which one will you choose in the primary election? No reason to waste a preliminary vote on Trump.

Great idea. The craziest of them all that has NO chance to win General.

I'm guessing that one of them (now 22) will be the next POTUS, even if he/she if totally out there.

I'd hope to bolster the most moderate candidate... Much like I did for the R primary in 2016.

Who is most moderate?

in reality, Trump. Hes ticked off a bunch of conservatives because hes not really that much of a conservative. Hes ticked off the Democrats because hes not a democrat (used to be though) and Orange Man Is Bad.

I didnt vote for him in the primary either FWIW

Big questions people need to ask about Don:

What has he done to negatively affect the country financially?

What has he done poorly in terms of policy?

Other than negative feelings towards him, why is he bad?

I have my issues with him, but all the hate and negative rhetoric is being fueled by people other than him. Should illegal aliens be allowed to vote? Should our tax dollars pay for illegals health care? Should people here use negative feelings towards Trump as an excuse to elect/vote for someone like Booker, Harris, Swalwell, etc who has stated they want you disarmed?

I have many issues with Don, but overall, Orange Man isnt that bad

Just curious: were the "assault rifles" these gentlemen carried restricted to semi-automatic function? If so, they are being disingenuous in the extreme.

Big shock, I know.

Who is most moderate?

If your definition of moderate is populism that would be Bernie and Tulsi. Same way that Trump is a moderate populist. Obviously none are great options because populist candidates rarely deliver on their promises, but at least they trigger the corporate centrists.

If your definition of moderate is global corporate centrism then it's just a matter of choosing

Klobuchar doesn't know Uncle Dick isn't on the terrorist watch list. Nobody knows who's on the watch list. It's a secret, extra-judicial process to get on it. It's a secret, extra-judicial process to get off it.

The only way to know if you're on it is to try to fly. If you're on it, you won't be allowed to board. You can ask to get off it if you think it's an error, but you will not be notified of any decision either way. The only way to know if you're still on it or are now off it is to try to fly again.

Jesse Jackson was on the list once. DHS took a lot of heat for it when he was denied boarding a plane. He was removed from list. It's not about how many DC politicians you have on speed dial. It's about how many DC politicians have you on speed dial.

Do they allow write ins during the primary?

If so, I might write in "Donald Trump".

How moderate is Klobuchar? What's her stance on the economy?

I believe it will be the economy and finances that drive most people to the polls, not 2A. Business is confident with Trump, and thriving business's are what keep the economy humming along. The Dems mostly have announced "Tax all the evil rich people to give all you mouth-breathers goodies" is their basic policy, scaring business to death. Everyone will scale back, to save $$$$ for the taxes that will come down on the economy, killing all livelihoods.

Teddy Kennedy was on the no-fly list, or at least kept turning up as a false positive for someone on the list. And even he had an extremely hard time getting things straightened out (and I'm sure he had the biggest Rolodex in DC).

What's the difference between the various democrats' position on gun control?
The only difference is the size and color of their strait jackets.

What to do? I recommend strategic voting.

Primary: Register as democrat. Vote for the #5 or #6 person They'll get delegates that get taken away from Joe.

General Election: Vote for Trump and whoever else you like.

So why do all of the Dems and some of the RINO's hate Tump so much? Main reason IMO is he is screwing up their neat little plans to remain elites while not doing a damn thing for the country.

Also, show me a Dem who does not say "but" after saying they support 2A. The most so called moderate Dem will disarm us in a heartbeat given the chance.

Yep. 2A supporting dems here, take back your party. No “buts”.

Both major US parties, and political organizations around the world, suffer from the fact that extremism is energizing and moderation is boring, so popular political processes tend to select the choices farthest from the center. Even politicians who start out moderate need to migrate towards the extremes to become or to remain successful. The more competitive the field, the farther they need to move.

None of the Democrat candidates are moderate enough to be acceptable to anyone that values the 2nd Amendment. In the general election I will, of course, be voting for Donald Trump as I did in 2016. But this time I plan on voting in the Democrat Primary, and will choose whatever candidate is on the ballot that I think has the weakest chance of beating Trump in the general. Right now I'm not sure who that might be.

The Democratic party continues to RUN as far left as they can. The Dem leadership has completely ignored and marginalized the "Blue Dog" democrats and other moderates and embrasses the socialists who hate all things American.

Most of the field are corporate backed centrists with a thin facade of progressiveness. The right does themselves a huge disservice by spreading the myth that they are actually far left, Socialist, or progressive. You're selling the lie to their gullible base for them.

Do you think Soros, Bloomberg, and all the other billionaires buying these candidates want to give your money and their money to the poor or working class? They buy these candidates to give your money to themselves. They just insert a protected class in the process and call it progression. Centrists definitely don't want you to have guns.

It's also better, IMO to explain politics as a horseshoe then a straight line.

I see American politics as a circle.

The extreme left and the extreme right come together at the bottom of the circle, with all the things they have in common (such as antisemitism, Catholophobia, anti-natalism, etc.)

Yup, that's the theory. The extreme left and right historically have come together via violence to collapse a government and prop up autocratic regimes in violent revolutions. But the opposing centrists exhibit a lot of the same tendencies. Rather then by force they play within the systems they establish to achieve the same means. Imperialistic expansion, slave labor, disarmerment of citizens, oppression, stifling free speech, and controlling education for the purpose of indoctrination. Just a kinder gentler machine gun hand.

There is also an entire spectrum of leftists that may disagree with your beliefs, but also similarly oppose government to enforce their beliefs. Most don't vote as neither party represents them. This is why I warn against lumping "the left" all together. We lose allies for the same causes, especially gun rights. The system is manufactured to sow this division, to push people into supporting a bad cause because one party claims to support what they see as a good cause.
