I have an XDs .45 that is at Springfield Armory as I type this because of a broken trigger safety.  I was wondering if anyone else who owns or knows of someone who owns an XDs has had this problem.

While at Dryloks freedom celebration , my lady friend was shooting the XDs and she complained that it wouldn't fire. I smacked the mag , racked the slide and proceeded to empty the mag .   I then inserted another mag and she emptied it.   After inserting the third mag , she fired 3 or 4 rounds and again said it wouldn't fire.

I then unloaded the firearm and looked it over. Couldn't find anything that looked out of place so I inserted a mag and as I did so I thought I saw something small and black fall from the gun but wasn't sure because it was just a small fast blur and could have been anything.  We were standing on rocks and I looked but didn't see anything.   I proceeded to fire and empty that mag and 2 others with no problem.

It wasn't till we went back to the chairs and sat down that I noticed the safety part of the trigger had no spring tension on it.

The pistol arrived at SA on 8-22-19 so we shall see how long it takes to get back.

For those who might chime in to say , " You shouldn't hand someone a loaded firearm !" , my friend has hand strength issues and can't rack the slide of this small power house.  She wanted to shoot a .45 so I let her.

Thanks for that link.  That thread kinda confirms what I have been thinking since I sent it off to SA .   When I get it back , I'm thinking of taking that trigger safety out and not having to worry if it will happen again right in the middle of me depending on it to save my life.

I just found this for the XDs ---> https://www.brownell...prod108140.aspx

I don't think I want to put another $100.00 into this gun. Others might so there is the link.

XDs are notorious for this kind of thing. Be glad yours didn't jam slightly out of battery or you would have been shipping it back like lots of others have.

Is there any problem with the 9 mm version? I have never had a problem with mine so far.

Read through the link that carry posted in post #2.  All of them 9 , 40, or .45 could have it happen.

I had to replace the trigger safety spring in my 9mm XDs, it broke in half.

I will have to be paying attention to that.

I will have to be paying attention to that.

When mine broke there was no warning.   One time it fired next time the trigger was locked up.   If I had been firing the gun I would have known the trigger was the issue right off.   However with it being my lady friend doing the shooting I never gave it a thought as something like what happened being the problem.   Especially after inserting another mag and it firing again.

When I get mine back I am going to do some serious thinking about doing away with that trigger safety or else find a better replacement trigger as in post #5 .

Had I been in a fight for my life with a trigger that wouldn't pull I would quite possibly not be here now.  I am not happy with that thought.

Interesting. I don’t shoot or carry my .45 XDs 4.0 as much lately as I did before, but I’d like to be sure it’s reliable. (I picked it up for wintertime carry.)

I need to research this.

I was a big XDS fan until I started following firearm trainers on social media.  An alarming number of XDS' have catastrophic failures in high round count classes.  This is one of the main reasons I stopped carrying mine, and bought an HK VP9 SK instead.

Extrator, grip safety, trigger bar.  One trainer had 25 XDS' over a 2 year period in his classes, 20 of them had catastrophic failures.  By catastrophic I don't mean it turned into a grenade like the Shield in 40 is notorious for, but the gun is out of the fight.

hmm this has been eye opening. I need to figure out what to do with the XDS then. At the least carry BUG bodyguard with it at all times.

Has this been limited to the XDs only and the full size XD are ok?

I gotta do some research.

Update ; Fedex brought it to my door today.  SA got the gun on 8/22/19 and I have it back 10/01/19. Looks like the same trigger.

So now I have a decision to make.  I can't say I truly trust this gun to defend my life without a change to the trigger .  So , do I keep the firearm along with the 8 mags plus two holsters and now put almost another $100.00 into it for an after market trigger  and hope I don't have any of the problems DD123 talked about   ......

or do I trade it for a S&W .45 performance center Shield which would still cost me about the same $100.00.  Then also I would have to buy at least one holster and magazines for the S&W.

Decisions , decisions .......

I've personally not seen many failures of XD or XDM.  I have an XDM I shot for 2 years in 3 gun and USPSA and have close to 10K rounds on it and it still runs like a champ.

I've seen a handful of trainers talking about an XD failure here and there, but it's the XDS that's the big one.  I've personally never had a problem with my XDS, but after seeing numerous posts from reputable training outfits, it made me buy a larger gun instead.  I carry the HK VP9 SK now, and am glad I made that choice because it's so much easier to shoot accurately than the XDS was, which isn't surprising because it's A LOT heavier than the XDS.

What did they do?

There's probably a sheet with it, showing work done/parts replaced.  (There was when my XD subcompact went in for cracked locking block 2 or 3 years back.)

They replaced the trigger and test fired it.

Good to know. Both my XD and XDS both have many thousands of rounds through them and never a hick up besides the XDS issues when they first came out. But may be time to replace the XDS.

After reading this thread I went to the xd forum and didnât see much about the trigger post recall. Google didnt provide anything overwhelming either. Please provide links to trainers referenced. I carry an XDS and would like to understand what these trainers are seeing and how to fix if necessary.

Never broke the trigger safety, however, I had an early one that would walk the trigger pin post recall.

Springfield wouldn't address it, traded it in shortly thereafter with a disclaimer.

Your googlefu must be weak because there are countless threads about it.

From what I can see there is one trainer who quoted 20 failures of Springfield’s, not just xds and not just trigger issues. Many forum posts dedicated to reciting this when someone has a problem, but it is not like the internet is filled with stories of the same trigger problem. Also, most of the xds issues I see appear to be with the 45, mine are 9’s.Having said this, it still shakes my faith in my xds‘ s and has me contemplating trading in towards glock single stacks. Wish HK made a single stack, P7 is bulky and my P2000SK is nice, but I prefer a single stack with T-shirt and jeans.

There have been over the last 5 or so years many more than just that one trainer that I’ve seen on various forms of social media. I kept ignoring it until I saw a post from a trainer who kept detailed logs of all catastrophic failures with guns and XD/XDS were at the top of the list with close to 35-40 over a 4-5 year period. I tried finding that post, but this was a over year ago. The one thing to keep in mind is when these guns fail in a class, you’re shooting 2k+ rounds.

If you’re anything like the average Joe, you may not put 2k+ rounds through the gun, ever, let alone over a single weekend. I think I’ve owned my XDS since 2014 and I believe I’m just over the 2k mark with no malfunctions. But this is 100 rounds here and there with cleanings after every trip, not dedicated high round count practice in a class scenario.

My quality gauge is how will a gun that I’m potentially going to need to save my life one day stand up to extreme punishment. If it can survive a high round count weekend class without any malfunctions or catastrophic failures, or significant wear, then that’s the gun I want to carry. I did a fair amount of research on what my next carry gun would be, and my buddy had a VP9 that he was tuning up for a customer so I went by to check it out. As soon as I gripped it, I could tell that I’d shoot it well, but the VP9 is a bit longer than I can conceal appendix. When I took at look at the SK, I started watching torture tests on YouTube and wound up buying one. First thing I did was have Trijicon nite sights installed because the ones that came with it weren’t steel sights that you could rack off of your belt. The very first time I shot it was at a PPC match. I shot 473 out of 480. It immediately went into my carry rotation. It’s not as thin as I’d like, but I have no issues appendix carrying it and it’s very well concealed.

You have to admit though, if just had one single trainer that saw 20 failures of the XD/XDS pistols, that's a pretty great indication of a much larger problem.  How many others took a dump and never said anything?

I've seen many people shooting XDM's and XD tactical's in USPSA and 3 gun, and I even shot one for a season and a half and never had an issue despite putting 7K through mine in a single season, but most of the parts that are reported to fail, were all aftermarket parts.  My buddy probably has 200K rounds through an XD tactical, and only had a slight chip in the slide that Springfield replaced for him.  But, that gun is far from stock with the majority of the fire control parts being replaced with aftermarket.  It's the same with my XDM 5.25.  With the exception of the barrel, slide, frame, and mag release, everything else is aftermarket.  Would the factory parts have lasted without breaking?  Maybe, maybe not, but my money would be on them breaking since that seems to be the pattern that gets reported by people online.

In any case, I'll stick with the VP9 SK.  It's the only carry type gun where I can switch over to weak hand, and the gun is right on target without me needing to adjust my aim or grip.  It's very ergonomic and well thought out, unlike other guns where it seems they created the grip based on a midgets hands, or Shaq's hands.
