mauserme Posted November 24, 2020 at 11:34 PM Share Posted November 24, 2020 at 11:34 PM This is an interesting development:https://www.politico.com/news/2020/11/24/controversial-gun-advocate-justice-department-440251 Controversial gun advocate hired by Justice Department last monthLott, who holds a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles, is best known for his 1998 book, “More Guns, Less Crime.”By JOSH GERSTEIN11/24/2020 06:01 AM ESTThe Justice Department has hired an economist known for provocative research claiming that communities can reduce crime by allowing widespread gun ownership and implementing policies making it easier to carry a gun in public.Last month, John Lott, 62, left a nonprofit group he founded seven years ago to take a job as a senior adviser for research and statistics at the Office of Justice Programs—a DOJ division that doles out $5 billion in grants each year.Lott, who holds a doctorate from the University of California at Los Angeles, is best known for his 1998 book, “More Guns, Less Crime,” and for a slew of reports, articles and op-eds advocating for lifting gun control laws.Lott confirmed his move to DOJ but declined to comment further. “I took a job at the Department of Justice. I’m really not supposed to say more than that,” he said when reached by phone last week.A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed Lott’s title Monday, but declined to answer further questions about his hiring. The spokesperson would not say whether Lott is serving as a political appointee or a career civil service position....
Flynn Posted November 24, 2020 at 11:36 PM Share Posted November 24, 2020 at 11:36 PM Probably be fired in short by the incoming administration if he doesn't fall in line with their narrative.

mauserme Posted November 25, 2020 at 01:12 AM Author Share Posted November 25, 2020 at 01:12 AM It could be that he'll be able to direct research and funding to a less anti-gun stance than currently exists or, could we hope, a neutral/pro stance. I know that's a lot to ask but I have to think there's more to this than a couple months of a well paying job.

I think the Bradys were among those "discrediting" him. Many of his critics had not read the research, and were condeming him on the premise alone. richp Posted November 25, 2020 at 11:26 AM Share Posted November 25, 2020 at 11:26 AM Interesting career move into the orbit of an incoming administration that surely will be out to muzzle and discredit people like him. I'm not inclined to think he will be there long, but it sure would be nice to have someone of his caliber in a position of influence. InterestedBystander Posted December 1, 2020 at 03:33 AM Share Posted December 1, 2020 at 03:33 AM Full article at link...Everytown is quite unhappy as well http://www.mom-at-arms.com/post/everytown-is-furious-about-john-lott-working-with-the-doj ..."NEW YORK — Everytown for Gun Safety and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, released the following statements in response to published reports that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has hired widely-discredited researcher John Lott as a senior advisor at the Office of Justice Programs, which gives out $5 billion a year in grants.“Putting John Lott in a position of power at DOJ to protect public safety is like putting an arsonist in charge of the fire department,” said Nick Suplina, managing director for law and policy at Everytown for Gun Safety. “It would be laughable if it wasn’t such a dangerous move that could have serious consequences for gun safety. This is one more mess the highly competent Biden team will have to clean up – hopefully before Lott can do irreversible damage.”“John Lott should be booted from the federal government and every policy or decision he’s touched while on government property should be thrown out,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “This is one of the worst hires the Trump administration could have made – and that’s truly saying something.” "... InterestedBystander Posted December 11, 2020 at 05:20 AM Share Posted December 11, 2020 at 05:20 AM Why These Senators Want John Lott Fired, Now https://www.americas1stfreedom.org/articles/2020/12/9/why-these-senators-want-john-lott-fired-now ..."Now nine U.S. Senators—including Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.)—have sent a letter to Attorney General William Barr demanding information on Lott’s hiring. The letter calls Lott “a pro-gun advocate who claims that widespread gun ownership can reduce crime.” This is nothing more than an ideologically motivated slur. Lott is a researcher and an academic who has taught at many universities. His peer-reviewed research has clearly shown that gun ownership tends to reduce crime. These senators want to know if Lott is a political appointee or if he is serving in a “career civil service position.” The intent of this is clear: They want to know how easy it will be to fire him, so they can thereby protect money going to anti-Second Amendment research, if Joe Biden is sworn in as president on January 20. They also want Barr to give them a list of “all individuals who held positions as political appointees since January 20, 2017, and are now employed in permanent competitive positions, non-political excepted service positions, or career Senior Executive Service (SES) positions at the Department and its components.”..
