soylentgreen Posted February 3, 2017 at 07:51 PM Share Posted February 3, 2017 at 07:51 PM As mentioned above, Crook County sucks, but Hoffman Estates is one of the few home rule municipalities that has specifically pre-empted the County's "assault weapons" ban. That's why Cabela's (in Hoffman Estates) can and does sell ARs, AKs etc. If you're in a home rule community, the Cook ban is null and void. It doesn't matter if there's a specific preemption on the books.
Gamma Posted February 3, 2017 at 07:56 PM Share Posted February 3, 2017 at 07:56 PM Since it's a temporary move, would it be feasible for you to maintain your Texas residency? Texas residents (as of this week) are able to apply for a non-resident IL carry license. You'd be able to carry in-vehicle up until the IL license arrives, no FOID required. Non-res CCL is more expensive.

dumpnpump Posted February 3, 2017 at 08:31 PM Share Posted February 3, 2017 at 08:31 PM I would suggest that if possible, you rent rather than buy in Illinois. We just sold out and moved out last fall. That way when your wife's term is up you can get out The state is broke, and the legislature is talking about a 33% tax increase. They could take everything everyone has and never pay off the debt. The legislature just keeps on spending.

The legislature just keeps on spending. This is true. It's worth to take some time and study the sold records to see how long houses are staying on the market, for the area you're looking at. If it's near a Metra station, it opens up to more buyers, for those that work downtown/city. Living in the city is getting really expensive and some don't want to move and go into the suburbs. Bo69 Posted February 3, 2017 at 08:59 PM Share Posted February 3, 2017 at 08:59 PM OMG! Assault weapons. I thought you could bring them and you had 90 days till your foid arrives. But I guess its better to be on the side of caution. Good luck. I would rather live in Texas but family keeps me here.I thought so too, so I asked when I called the Poice Dept and they said that only applies to Driver's License and vehicle registration. As for being in Texas, I truly love it here and embrace my state with so much love; however, I also love my wife and now am returning the support as she's supported me on my military obligations along with civilian job moving us to different locations. Although we love Texas, we look forward to stepping out of our comfort zone and seeing what it's like in Il. Buy winter coats and boots.

We have the best politicians money can buy here. Mine takes Visa and Mastercard. Welcome to Illannoy. Make plans to skedaddle quickly. Ordinary Average Guy Posted February 4, 2017 at 02:30 AM Share Posted February 4, 2017 at 02:30 AM Welcome to Illinois! I wish I was in Texas! Thanks, tell me about it. I love it here and don't really want to go, nor does my Army unit, but it must be done for a short period of time. This is really the trickiest thing, getting my guns into Illinois, so this information here is certainly helping me.If I am not mistaken you can take a CC class and apply for both CC and FOID at the same time instead of waiting. Many CC classes provide a gun to use for test. Just may save you time. Also your military service, if I understood your statement correctly, may have some advantage in applying for both. Best of luck to you and your wife. Too bad you don't have relatives here that have FOID, you could have them take temporary possession for you until you are "legal" here. ragsbo Posted February 4, 2017 at 04:11 AM Share Posted February 4, 2017 at 04:11 AM My best advice would be NOT TO COME HERE PERIOD!!!!!! You will hate it and wish you never did. Windchaser Posted February 4, 2017 at 01:50 PM Share Posted February 4, 2017 at 01:50 PM If you'll be in Hoffman Estates area, you'll be almost out of Cook county. My advice, move a bit further into another county. Huntley/Gilberts have cheap homes and some new construction. And you'll be close to On Target. +1000 Living in Cook county had lots more f disadvantages. One of the worst is all of their extra taxes which will raise the cost of everything for you. Huntley, Gilbert's and that general area is a great place to live. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

OldMarineVet Posted February 4, 2017 at 06:00 PM Share Posted February 4, 2017 at 06:00 PM Hi, I'm new to the forum and expect to be on here often as I have a lot to learn. I'm a 32 year old man and for the last 32 years, all I've known is Texas, so now I will be moving to Illinois later this year as my wife's job is taking us there for a couple of years. I am currently serving in the Army National Guard and have a CHL (Concealed Handgun License) in the state of Texas. As expected, being a Texan and all, I own many firearms, some of which are "assault weapons" *giggles*. Thus far, all I know is that I can't take them with me initially, so I've already moved my guns into storage and will move them to Illinois with me once I jumped through all of the legal hoops required in order to do so. I am here to look for advice and tips on where to start; to give you some idea of what area I'll be in, it'll be near the Hoffman Estates. I've already contacted the Police Dept, and all they told me was to leave my guns in TX, move to Il, apply for a FOID and wait. Not sure what to do next. OBJECTIVE: My overall objective in this topic is to eventually be able to conceal carry in the state of Illinois, to visit a gun range often and to be able to keep my firearms stored at home. Thanks in advance for any advice. PS. I just realized I misspelled "moving", how do I correct that? Good advice from cop: "move to Il, apply for a FOID and wait" Lots of good advice above about then getting the Illinois Concealed Carry License. My advice applies to the "move to Il" part. As mentioned above, Hoffman Estates is in Cook County but it's relatively close to the edge of it. If you can find residence in a county different than Cook, you will find your arms bearing life less complicated. Lots of gun-related regulations in Cook beyond other Illinois counties. Not much difference, if any, regarding gun-regulated regulations between all other Illinois counties. One of the worst ones is Cook County regulation prohibiting sheltering "assault weapons" in your residence. You can own them but have to find another place in other counties to keep them. Now some Cook County villages have "home rule" laws that seems to allow sheltering them, but who knows what the future can bring? If you can live in any county other than Cook County, your life will be simpler. ========================================== Here's a current thread that is an example of an issue within Cook County Palmetto State Armory Will Not Ship To Cook County http://illinoiscarry.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=59390&hl=
Blackbeard Posted February 4, 2017 at 07:13 PM Share Posted February 4, 2017 at 07:13 PM Seems like a lot of people from the "free" states think we're just like Commie-fornia here, but we're really not. You do need a FOID card and a carry license, but other than that, outside of Chicago and Cook county it's pretty normal. No stupid AWB, no magazine limits. Just a short waiting period for purchases. JTHunter Posted February 5, 2017 at 04:16 AM Share Posted February 5, 2017 at 04:16 AM Texas to Illinois? You're going the wrong way!!!Don't do it. Everyone else under the sun is trying to figure out how to exit this corrupt state for good reason. Moving to Illinois from Texas? May God have mercy on you soul... Listen and believe !! If it weren't for an aging parent who refuses to move out of state, I would have been gone several years ago. Wyoming and Montana have certain appeal to me (elk, pronghorn, muleys, etc.) but northern Arizona, away from the desert is a good alternative. vito Posted February 5, 2017 at 07:58 PM Share Posted February 5, 2017 at 07:58 PM You have my heartfelt condolences. Moving from Texas to Illinois is like moving from Illinois to NJ. If you want a quick tip about the state of Illinois, just remember that it went strongly for Hilary Clinton in November. That should be enough to scare off any sane person. BigJim Posted February 6, 2017 at 03:59 PM Share Posted February 6, 2017 at 03:59 PM Even the west side of Elgin or north into East or West Dundee is nice plus in Kane county. Not only will your sales taxes and property taxes be cheaper but so is the cost of homes and apartments. You'll also be close to the Big Timber Metra station which has plenty of parking. If you move to Hoffman Estates you will be driving to and from the Barlett Metra station.

btownbb Posted February 10, 2017 at 10:15 PM Share Posted February 10, 2017 at 10:15 PM Don't have a cow man! LOL! I lived in Texas too for a while and while Illinois does make you jump through a few hoops it really is not all the onerous. Get here, get your DL and apply for your FOID. That will take a few weeks to process. My wife just got hers in three weeks. Once you have the FOID you can legally possess your firearms. Do review the law for anything that might be banned here or take extra permits such as suppressors. As for CCL, you will need to take the class. The good thing is you will not have to take all 16 hours. Your military training or other training will wipe out 8 hours of the class. Gat Guns in East Dundee is a good place to go, is near Hoffman Estates and is probably one of the larger stores/ranges around. Cost of the CCL is high and takes a while to issue, anywhere from 60-120 or sometimes even longer if there are issues. It is annoying. Cheers and welcome to the great white north. :-(Yeah, its not onerous at all......my foid application has just been in "under review" status for over 100 days. Good luck getting a FOID in a timely manner.
