Illinois Education Association (IEA) and the indoctrination of public schools against firearms

Thousands of people gathered in towns and cities across Illinois for student-led March for our Lives events on March 24. Now, those same students and others are moving on to another project and organizing town hall meetings for residents in Illinois to meet with their congressional representatives across the state. Go to Town Hall Project to find out if a town hall meeting has been scheduled in your area, or how you can schedule one.

NEA Director and IEA Board member Karl Goeke encouraged the IEA Board of Directors at the Feb. 16-17 meeting to organize a day of action against gun violence in schools. Read Karls powerful account of what happened in his school.

Between 2013 and 2015, an average of two school shootings each month took place at K-12 schools nationwide, according to Everytown for Gun Safety. School violence happens so frequently that some are calling this generation of students the Mass Shooting Generation.

In the Parkland community and across the nation, students and educators are at the forefront of demanding that elected officials make changes to keep them safe.

In media interviews, at rallies, and in meetings with legislators, students are asking for a range of solutions, including more resources for mental health and a ban on assault weapons like the one used at Stoneman Douglas.

This is not the first time students have been leaders for change. They braved fire hoses and fierce dogs throughout the South to champion civil rights in the 1960s. Young people also took the lead in 1968, after NEA organized the Project 18 drive to lower the voting age from 21 to 18. Some people wrote their movement off as another childrens crusade, but ultimately, Congress approved the 26th Amendment in 1971.

Email Congress through the NEA Legislative Action Center to pressure representatives to pass common-sense gun laws and listen to the voices of educators and students.

Resources are available for helping school communities cope with this latest mass shooting and to assist educators in talking with students about school shootings and other traumatic events.

Send condolences or make a donation to the Stoneman Douglas community.

Ask your school board to oppose arming educators, using this a sample resolution.

NEAs Crisis Guide helps schools prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from tragedies like school shootings. Download the guide.

How can we collaborate with others to create safe schools for all?

The issue of safe schools is one that most stakeholders are expecting educators to lead on. There are many ways we can lead on this issue as educators, parents, community members, taxpayers, and some of us can even weigh in as elected officials. This is a powerful moment for us.

Host an Illinois Educators Action Network Strategy Team meeting

At the strategy team meeting, put the questions you would like to see the group respond to on flip chart paper around the room. Ask the attendees to write their responses to these questions on post-it notes. You may want to ask them to write their names on the back of the post it notes.

Download Template for Strategy Team Meetings

After all of the responses are submitted, break out into groups to summarize, categorize, analyze, and expand upon the responses. What actions might you take based on the responses?

I find it interesting that they mention Parkland Florida in their resolution. In light of that school shooting the Florida legislators relaxed their gun laws and now allow for teachers to be armed in the schools in Florida.

In my eyes, knowing this puts a big dent in their resolution and their ability to use Parkland as a stance for more gun control. Bunch of idiots.

March for our lives, NEA, and IEA want to make sure that if it happens again there will be plenty of little dead bodies, they're doing all they can to ENABLE a mass killer and keep them from being stopped for as long as possible so the carnage will be really bad. They need those little dead bodies so they can exploit them and push the civilian disarmament agenda. they NEVER call for anything but civilian disarmament during the aftermath. These are same type of diseased in the head liberals that think murdering a child AFTER being born is just fine, so a few years past that is fine with them too.

Floridas lawmakers narrowly passed a controversial gun bill late on Wednesday that would allow armed teachers in the states classrooms, three weeks to the day after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school massacre in which 17 people were killed.

This is what the NEA had to say

http://neatoday.org/2018/02/21/students-lead-protest-to-change-gun-laws/

Theres a new face on the age-old gun debate: our students, and they wont be silenced. They are demanding that the adults in power keep them safe and they will not stand by and allow elected officials to fail them any longer.

The rally participants called for a ban on assault weapons like the one used at the high school, and to vote out any lawmaker who opposes a ban on assault weapons or who takes money from the National Rifle Association.

Nationwide, students and activists have joined their rallying cry and have organized two upcoming events the National School Walkout on March 14 and the March for Our Lives on March 24. NEA will also participate in another event, a National Day of Action on April 20, the anniversary of the Columbine shooting.

March 14th the Womens March has announced a National School Walkout in which school communities will walk out of their schools for 17 minutes to honor the lives lost in Parkland. NEA will join with AFT in encouraging educators throughout the country to wear orange on this day.

March 24th Several students who survived the tragedy at Parkland have called for a student-led march and protest. They will travel to Washington, DC, and meet with politicians on the need to address gun violence and are encouraging others to join. This is a fully student-planned march. More information can be found at marchforourlives.com

April 20 NEA and its members are joining with the National Public Education Network, American Federation of Teachers, Moms Demand Action, Everytown for Gun Safety, Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence, and other national organizations, to take action against gun violence on April 20 together in a way that sends a strong message to policy makers that #enoughisenough.

We demand a plan that will keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of dangerous people, says NEA President Lily Eskelsen García. Only the United States has such a long, long, long list of mass public murders by a lone gunman. The reason is simple. Our laws allow dangerous people to easily purchase military-style, rapid-fire assault weapons. Thats the only difference. Thats what we need to fix. Thoughts and prayers will not prevent the next tragedy. People rising up will.

NEA is asking educators nationwide to share their ideas and information on events in their school communities. Visit our National Day of Action site.

Yes and that piece of garbage who committed the mass murder was sending warning signals galore but the school made sure to keep it off his record. if they would have reported him and the Sheriff would have been even slightly useful he would have never gotten a gun legally. this psycho was allowed to grow into the killer he is.

This can be equally countered. But to do so you have to be there, organized, with the appropriate counter messaging, and most helpfully with local residents to support the presence. You can't just have a mass of disorganized people. We have to community organize...

The entire "common" claims can be easily refuted.

You can easily show how other issues, such as opioids, are a far greater threat, etc. so why are't you pushing to close the southern border... Or, the stoneman killer used 10 round magazines... Or the gross failures of law enforcement, the school administration and Obama era policies...

I can help with the messaging side. But it takes a fair amount of work at the expense of business and family. It's not worth that time or effort if the messaging is not actually delivered.

They can do this because they are funded and have permanent staff. This is their job. We need something similar from ISRA or NRA or GOA.This goes beyond legislative lobbying. The associations I know that do extensive grassroots efforts in fact have dedicated staff just for this.

IL-10 is an activism hot spot these days, weird.

For those in the area, this one would definitely be worth attending as Second Amendment Observers. "Panelists: Mayor Harriet Rosenthal, Village of Deerfield Alicia Schemel, State Legislative Lead for Mom's Demand Action Sara Knizhnik, Organizer at IL Coalition on Handgun Violence"

Which gets back to the dead horse I keep beating.

We need a formal, organized and funded grass roots effort to counter this. Not just here but nationally. We needed one 5 or so years ago when this all began. Where was the NRA? Where is the NRA? This is basic stuff.

We don't have to have a $36 million budget. We could do it likely at 1/10th of that. Again, not a diss on our dedicated lobbyists, they do a great job, but grass roots in association type activism tends to be a FT position, often with a limited staff. It's an actual job. It's a MarCom function. It works with the lobbyists but it's community organizing and messaging. I bet Shannon Watts would be just as at home promoting gingivitis eradication for Collgate. And remember, gun control is secondary to these folks. It's simply a tool used to leverage GOTV for democrat candidates in specific, appropriate markets/demographics. If women tended to be more pro gun, then the "Moms" would be focused on a different, female-centric issue.

Our advantage for us is that with some formal support, there are plenty of willing folk that can be the foot soldiers.

It's funny, I can't recall Schneider's opponent mentioning Bloomberg at all during the general election campaign. I'l assume that "Bloomberg" isn't another forbidden word, yet.

Would make for a heck of a 2020 platform though wouldn't it? A referendum on Michael Bloomberg as 2018 was so absurdly in the Chicago suburbs, a referendum on Trump.

That's it though. They didn't organize. They were professionally organized. Take away Bloomberg and there are no moms. And, take away Bloomberg now and the staffing and resources and the moms go away. As your post above shows, the focus is on kicking out lawmakers, or GOTV. Guns are just the wedge issue, and one that only applies selectively. We can match this. We can be just as scary to lawmakers. But it's not going to happen informally.

IMO, we need to call them on this specifically. We need to bring all those that support this into the culture war and take away the human shields they use to cover it up.

I know you get it, but we will never be able to compromise or win any of these people over. As you also previously said, we need to be like them in a sense, but not backed by the billionaires and the professional orgs. Again, we need to meet up again soon.

As to everyone else, think of the irony behind all of this. Here we are as individuals fighting to protect our rights and way of life, and these goons are the literal foot “stormtroopers” for tyrants.

Oh, BTW, we got more FOIA’s back with the moms and local governments. Good stuff so far.....

You got it. Just like my slice of the north shore. It might as well be lakefront Chicago.

They are very cleaver in how they do this. The education establishment is highly indoctrinated and leftist. That is the case even in conservative states and counties. You frequently see some BS out of some school in the deep South. That specific audience, with some silent minority within looking out for their careers, is a write off. Guns are a good motivator to get started but they will, by and large, easily support an agenda the typical democrat centrist would not. We could make arguments to them but if they listened they wouldn't care.

I have an Indian Guides trip with my son this weekend but after that any time. Frankly this likely has to be a GOP or NRA supported deal. But, there are issues with those groups as well. The ILGOP in my neck of the woods has been anti gun, anti Tea Party, anti Trump, anti conservative really. Their campaign ads seem to attack the right more than they do the left. I've also had the impression, right or wrong, that they knew IL would never be GOP dominate and seemed willing to just get their slice of the pie and settle for that. But, the Democrats are chipping away at that slice and the ILGOP can't be all that happy about it. As your FOIA docs show they are active in areas like DeKalb county. We could help replace their losses up state with gains downstate. Though I would have a hard time fighting against any solid 2nd Amendment downstate democrat. But there are plenty who are not.

We can be the foot soldiers, but the political and demographic attack vector will likely have to be different. There are still plenty of purple areas, Schnider's district for example, where there can be some impact. It's fairly easy to message and prove that when you get on board with the moms and elect a moms candidate, you are electing the entire far left agenda.

We will soon be electing school board members, that is where it all starts. Ask those running what their values are and how they feel about allowing teachers to be armed in class. How do they feel about armed police presence in schools? I have only been able to talk with one person so far that is running in my local district but I am voting for him for sure.

Notice I said "allowing" teachers to be armed not "arming" teachers. Don't let someone else frame the discussion by getting into the "arming teachers" argument. They will tell you teachers do not want to be armed and in many cases they are correct some people will never be comfortable handling guns. "Allowing teachers to be armed means those that probably already carry that are willing to get proper training should be able to carry in schools. No lock boxes where the gun must be retrieved from but on the person of those authorized to carry. Jim.
