Thousands of people gathered in towns and cities across Illinois for student-led March for our Lives events on March 24. Now, those same students and others are moving on to another project and organizing town hall meetings for residents in Illinois to meet with their congressional representatives across the state. NEA Director and IEA Board member Karl Goeke encouraged the IEA Board of Directors at the Feb. 16-17 meeting to organize a day of action against gun violence in schools. Read Karls powerful account of what happened in his school.

 

Between 2013 and 2015, an average of two school shootings each month took place at K-12 schools nationwide, according to Everytown for Gun Safety. School violence happens so frequently that some are calling this generation of students the Mass Shooting Generation.

In the Parkland community and across the nation, students and educators are at the forefront of demanding that elected officials make changes to keep them safe.

In media interviews, at rallies, and in meetings with legislators, students are asking for a range of solutions, including more resources for mental health and a ban on assault weapons like the one used at Stoneman Douglas.

This is not the first time students have been leaders for change. They braved fire hoses and fierce dogs throughout the South to champion civil rights in the 1960s. Young people also took the lead in 1968, after NEA organized the Project 18 drive to lower the voting age from 21 to 18. Some people wrote their movement off as another childrens crusade, but ultimately, Congress approved the 26th Amendment in 1971.

Email Congress through the NEA Legislative Action Center to pressure representatives to pass common-sense gun laws and listen to the voices of educators and students.

March 24th Several students who survived the tragedy at Parkland have called for a student-led march and protest. We demand a plan that will keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of dangerous people, says NEA President Lily Eskelsen García. Only the United States has such a long, long, long list of mass public murders by a lone gunman. The reason is simple. Again, not a diss on our dedicated lobbyists, they do a great job, but grass roots in association type activism tends to be a FT position, often with a limited staff. It's an actual job. It's a MarCom function. It works with the lobbyists but it's community organizing and messaging. I bet Shannon Watts would be just as at home promoting gingivitis eradication for Collgate. And remember, gun control is secondary to these folks. It's simply a tool used to leverage GOTV for democrat candidates in specific, appropriate markets/demographics. If women tended to be more pro gun, then the "Moms" would be focused on a different, female-centric issue.

 

Our advantage for us is that with some formal support, there are plenty of willing folk that can be the foot soldiers.

You got it. Just like my slice of the north shore. It might as well be lakefront Chicago.

 

They are very cleaver in how they do this. The education establishment is highly indoctrinated and leftist. That is the case even in conservative states and counties. You frequently see some BS out of some school in the deep South. That specific audience, with some silent minority within looking out for their careers, is a write off. Guns are a good motivator to get started but they will, by and large, easily support an agenda the typical democrat centrist would not. We could make arguments to them but if they listened they wouldn't care.

 

I have an Indian Guides trip with my son this weekend but after that any time. Frankly this likely has to be a GOP or NRA supported deal. But, there are issues with those groups as well. The ILGOP in my neck of the woods has been anti gun, anti Tea Party, anti Trump, anti conservative really. Their campaign ads seem to attack the right more than they do the left. I've also had the impression, right or wrong, that they knew IL would never be GOP dominate and seemed willing to just get their slice of the pie and settle for that. But, the Democrats are chipping away at that slice and the ILGOP can't be all that happy about it. As your FOIA docs show they are active in areas like DeKalb county. We could help replace their losses up state with gains downstate. Though I would have a hard time fighting against any solid 2nd Amendment downstate democrat. But there are plenty who are not.

 

We can be the foot soldiers, but the political and demographic attack vector will likely have to be different. There are still plenty of purple areas, Schnider's district for example, where there can be some impact. It's fairly easy to message and prove that when you get on board with the moms and elect a moms candidate, you are electing the entire far left agenda.

We will soon be electing school board members, that is where it all starts. Ask those running what their values are and how they feel about allowing teachers to be armed in class. How do they feel about armed police presence in schools? I have only been able to talk with one person so far that is running in my local district but I am voting for him for sure.

Notice I said "allowing" teachers to be armed not "arming" teachers. Don't let someone else frame the discussion by getting into the "arming teachers" argument. They will tell you teachers do not want to be armed and in many cases they are correct some people will never be comfortable handling guns. "Allowing teachers to be armed means those that probably already carry that are willing to get proper training should be able to carry in schools. No lock boxes where the gun must be retrieved from but on the person of those authorized to carry. Jim.
