I thought Elmhurst was the true Western Front, now I'm not so sure.  This may just be poor reporting but is likely also a further demonstration of how much more education people need.  I've probably walked right past this Kirsten Powers with a loaded handgun...

Safety concerns raised over a planned firearms class qualifying people to carry concealed weapons in Illinois are baseless, according to Elmhurst police chief Michael Ruth.

"It's strictly a classroom environment," Ruth said Wednesday. "There's no weapons, there's no firearms, there's no ammunition. There's none of those things."

Social media activity on a couple of Elmhurst Facebook pages had raised the specter of armed students coming to the Sept. 23 and 24 classes being offered in the Knights of Columbus Hall at 537 S. York St.

Brad Carey, who manages hall rentals, was as emphatic as Ruth about the rental by Illinois Concealed Carry, LLC, the organization putting on the classes.

"In the contract I had them sign, there's no ammunition allowed in the hall," Carey said. "There's no shooting going on."

Carey said during the rental the Knights bar will be closed and locked up.

The issue may have been fueled on social media, but it got to the Elmhurst City Council meeting Tuesday when resident Kirsten Powers told council members about her concerns. Powers cited what she said were written statements by previous class attendees that they were "required to bring a firearm" and were "required to shoot on the last day of class."

Ruth and Carey were clear that no firearms would be brought to the class and certainly none would be fired in Elmhurst. Both said after a full class day on Saturday, the Sunday classroom work would end at 1 p.m. Participants are expected then to leave Elmhurst for hands-on gun work at an approved firing range outside the city.

Ruth said those intending to fire weapons outside Elmhurst after the class must possess a valid Illinois Firearms Owners Identification card issued by the Illinois State Police. Weapons to be transported must be broken down and not easily accessible from within the vehicle.

A representative of Illinois Concealed Carry declined to comment.

Ruth said the classes don't violate any local laws and that city officials had no reason to intervene.

"It's a freedom of speech issue and a freedom of assembly issue," he said.

Carey was also clear that for the Knights, it was simply a hall rental.

"If there was any danger to anybody in Elmhurst, we wouldn't be doing it," he said.

Problem is, for many; they don't want to be educated. They don't want facts. They don't want reason.

They want to be in charge.

She wants to be busybody. Her husband or wife ( want to be PC) is  probably not around and the neighbors hate her.  Now everyone knows the class date and where to get some guns.

What a bunch of BS

This isn't about safety - its about enforcing her will on others.

She's not really concerned about safety, she wants conformity and she's angry that she can't enforce her will and her world view on others.

It's not that they fear law abiding citizens carrying concealed firearms - it's that they RESENT the heck out of them and hate their guts.

All of these antis believe that only the police should have guns - police and military - and even some of them they raise a stink about:

CWRU students, faculty rankled by housing of police during Republican National Convention

http://www.cleveland...ty_rankled.html

They hate gun-owning, gun-wearing citizens because they won't conform and cede power and knuckle under to them.

"Weapons to be transported must be broken down and not easily accessible from within the vehicle." If the Elmhurst Chief of Police is this clueless about foid carry then he needs to plop down his money and attend on of these classes just so he can be current on the law.

Before one of the Elmhurst Police arrest someone and create another John Horstman incident.

I'd love to see Elmhurst write a $50,000 check to a law abiding gun owner because Elmhurst unlawfully arrested them even though they were transporting a firearm legally.

I'd like to see someone open a gun store in Oak Park but WTH, we can't even get one in Chicago despite winning multiple lawsuits. Any one who's a trainer should try to schedule a class in Elmhurst.

One of the reasons I really hope this was just more bad reporting.

U of Chicago, figures.  They must teach an alternate version of the Constitution there.

Uses the Tom Jefferson quote in her FBook cover page:

All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience (meaning those that agree with her) to remain silent.

Getting tiring.

Ruth said those intending to fire weapons outside Elmhurst after the class must possess a valid Illinois Firearms Owners Identification card issued by the Illinois State Police.

Unless something has changed or I misunderstood something, you can still go to the range and shoot your quals without a FOID.  You just have to barrow/rent a firearm from someone since can't own your own firearm without a FOID but you can still shoot.

Big Jim, you are correct. There are exemptions in the ILCS that allow a person that doesn't have a FOID to still shoot a firearm on a range.

As usual this Police Chief doesn't know the law as he is incorrect not only on the issue you stated, but his lack of knowledge on how to properly "Transport" a firearm.
