Pre-employment screenings/prescription drugs and FOID/FTIP eligibility

Has anyone here had any issues with maintaining a FOID/clearing an FTIP after a pre-employment drug screening while taking (legally prescribed/possessed per federal/state law) prescription drugs? What kind of documentation would you suggest bringing to the screening center in order to cover your bases in this case (e.g., prescription pamphlet, doctor's note, etc.)?

What kind of documentation would you suggest bringing to the screening center in order to cover your bases in this case (e.g., prescription pamphlet, doctor's note, etc.)?

If you're talking about actual prescription drugs then nothing is a gonna happen. You may need to explain to your employer and produce a prescription if you test positive for opiates or things like that. If its Marijuana then its obviously illegal at the federal level. They ask you that question directly on any 4473 you fill out. I wouldn't lie on a 4473.

But the state could care less. It won't affect your FOID card or CCL. But you won't be able to purchase a firearm from an FFL again if you have a medical card or prescription for Marijuana as a substitute for painkillers. Could you get away with it ? Maybe. But why risk it.

If you're talking about actual prescription drugs then nothing is a gonna happen. You need to disclose any prescriptions you're taking when you take your whiz quiz. Some places have a form you fill out, on which you would write down the medication and prescription number.

That's what happened the last time I took one of these pre employment screenings.  The form also asked about OTC meds.  I was on cold formula Tylenol at the time and was told "write it down".  I passed with no issues.

Thanks guys, this was helpful (haven't taken one in years/for my past 3 jobs so wanted to be sure).

While going through the final stage of pre-employment interviews for my part time department I had to meet with the PD and pee in a cup. The Lieutenant administering the test knew I was sworn and still with my full time municipality where I'm subject to random testing so we both kind of laughed about the process.

Until he came in with a concerned / surprised / confused look and asked if there was a reason my urnine tested positive for MDMA.

After some confused anger - including a reply that my wardrobe didn't include fuzzy boots any more than my agenda included attending raves, I listed all my prescription and OTC meds and supplements and we both adjourned to research, him in his office and me on my phone, finding the answer at the same time.

As he entered the interview room, I exclaimed "Zyrtec D", to which he nodded and exclaimed "yep!". Turns out the psuedoephedrine that acts as the decongestant ("D") is a precursor substance and can result in a false positive, even when used under medical direction.

I was approved for hire with no issue, but the Lt. still jokes with me, asking where the next rave is scheduled. :)

The letter is better. Get multiple copies, one for the place where you get tested and another for your employer. 

 

And remember that eating any dish or product with poppy seeds will turn up a positive result.

Get a letter from your doctor certifying that he has prescribed the drugs for you. These days most prescriptions are electronic so you cannot make a copy. Or take a picture of the label on the meds. The letter is better. Get multiple copies, one for the place where you get tested and another for your employer. 

 

And remember that eating any dish or product with poppy seeds will turn up a positive result. 

I would not give the information to your employer unless you have a condition or take meds that will impact your ability to perform the job you were hired for.

I do have a copy of the prescription pamphlet, would that be enough in lieu of a doctor's note (the pharmacist said it should be ok)?

A pamphlet is meaningless.

As stated before, all you need to do is provide the testing center a list of anything you're taking, and if it's a prescription, you provide the prescription number. THAT's what shows that you're allowed to be taking them, and they can verify that information in their system.

You don't need to provide anything to your employer... they will receive pass/fail results from the testing center.

A pamphlet is meaningless.

My job for our company is taking care of drug testing results. I do NOT need to know what medication you are on. We send you to a testing center. Complete the paperwork correctly and list the medication you are on as pointed out. 

 

MAKE SURE YOU PUT A WORKING PHONE NUMBER ON THERE SO THE MRO (Medical Resource Officer (the doctor)) CAN CONTACT YOU. Then answer the phone when they call. Yes, it will be a phone number you don't recognize, yes i know everyone gets a lot of unsolicited phone calls, but if the MRO can't get a hold of you, then the test is marked positive.  

 

Once the MRO gets a hold of you, then you give them the prescription information again (they will be making sure they can read what you wrote and that you didn't forget any medications) and they will validate the prescriptions. As long as the test match the prescriptions and you have valid/current prescriptions for them, then your test is marked as negative and you are good to go.

I've never been called to verify prescriptions.
