Just some guy Posted November 15, 2018 at 09:56 PM Share Posted November 15, 2018 at 09:56 PM The Illinois Association of School Boards(IASB) is holding it's annual conference this week in Chicago. There are 3 resolutions urging the IL Legislature to allow employees to be armed. These resolutions are from rural IL school districts and their rational is interesting. How did your school board vote? HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE!!! You will notice the IASB Nominating Committee recommends: Do not adopt. The IASB uses your tax dollars to lobby Springfield. Often the actions of school boards fly WAY UNDER the radar. I came across this info while researching a proposal by my municipality to hire a school resource officer See the Resolutions here, starting on page 9:http://iasb.mys1cloud.com/ResolutionsCommitteereport18.pdf
Molly B. Posted November 16, 2018 at 12:53 AM Share Posted November 16, 2018 at 12:53 AM Actually, around 16 school boards submitted what ended up being three similar resolutions. The resolution committee voted do not adopt on two of them and voted DO ADOPT on the third one which was from Mercer County and contained some combined language from the others and a little more concise wording. it is the second one listed. Molly B, thanks for your input. I guess my point was that folks need to get involved with their school boards. This issue is squarely in our wheelhouse and another example of the 2A being relevant in everyday life.
soylentgreen Posted November 16, 2018 at 06:00 PM Share Posted November 16, 2018 at 06:00 PM Look at this. District 15 is in suburban Cook and covers Rolling Meadows, Hoffman Estates, Palatine, Arlington Heights and perhaps some others to some extent. https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20181114/hire-armed-retired-cops-for-school-clerical-roles-district-15-pursuing-plan It seems to me this plan could be implemented under existing Illinois law. Honeybee42 Posted November 18, 2018 at 10:30 PM Share Posted November 18, 2018 at 10:30 PM We're one of those rural school districts that was in favor of the resolution. I think my kids were more encouraged when the strategy changed to the run/hide/fight model ... there's a sporting goods store across the 2 lane highway that the school is on, and multiple students plan to run there and hope they're allowed to arm from inventory (although to be honest, most of such places have staff that carries openly while on the clock, so a shooter most likely wouldn't follow them there ... but getting there is a bit of a job since there's really nothing even in the way of concealment. My daughter said that she'd be willing, if it happened during the time she's in the band room, to try to knock the shooter out with the drum major mace(it's got about a 4-1/2' extension to her reach). Doesn't that just make you feel secure, imagining a situation in which your child is going against someone armed with a firearm using a long stick with a metal ball on one end? HeavyDuty Posted November 19, 2018 at 12:55 AM Share Posted November 19, 2018 at 12:55 AM Unfortunately, the vote failed this morning 179-203.I think I heard there were 20+ abstentions on top of that. Listening to the antis mischaracterizing the issue on the tube was sickening.
Molly B. Posted November 19, 2018 at 05:24 PM Share Posted November 19, 2018 at 05:24 PM This vote is not about their school, their school can choose not to participate. That's 203 voting against other schools having the choice -
soylentgreen Posted November 19, 2018 at 05:37 PM Share Posted November 19, 2018 at 05:37 PM I really don't get the butt hurt over armed security at schools. The antis actually think guns are the problem. That's why they think banning guns is the solution. They refuse to understand that the intent of the person holding the gun plays a role. I've seen a number of people saying "Schools are no place for guns" and "What about the risk of accidental discharge?" Honestly, I've stopped replying to such comments because these people are immune to logic. All you can get by arguing with them is massive frustration. Flynn Posted November 19, 2018 at 09:35 PM Share Posted November 19, 2018 at 09:35 PM Yet, another reason of many that enforces the fact we made the right choice to homeschool our children.

I don't understand why their hatred gets in the way of protecting kids. They never complain about armed guards at banks, 7-11s, or jewelry stores. Heck, I see armed armored trunk workers all the time. They never complain about them either.
