bmyers Posted January 11, 2021 at 07:27 PM Share Posted January 11, 2021 at 07:27 PM SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan on Monday said he was “suspending” his campaign for a 19th term in the leadership post. Madigan, the longest-serving leader of a legislative body in U.S. history, issued a statement that began, “This is not a withdrawal.” But it urged House Democrats to “work to find someone, other than me, to get 60 votes for speaker.” Madigan has led the House almost continuously since 1983. He has been dogged recently by a Justice Department investigation into a bribery scheme involving utility ComEd. The 78-year-old Chicago Democrat has not been charged with a crime and has denied wrongdoing. But in a caucus vote Sunday, his support fell short of the 60 votes needed for his retention. The campaign is for a House leader for the 102nd General Assembly, which will be inaugurated on Wednesday. Question really is.........is the devil you know better than the devil you don't. I can't imagine Willis with the speaker gavel.

Hatchet Posted January 11, 2021 at 10:10 PM Share Posted January 11, 2021 at 10:10 PM Doesn't sound like he is giving up the purse strings for the democratic party. So he would still have full control.

richp Posted January 12, 2021 at 08:37 PM Share Posted January 12, 2021 at 08:37 PM Classic tactic to smoke out your opposition then pounce. Either that or the Feds are really closing in, and he's going to need to be able to tap his campaign cash for a legal defense. mauserme Posted January 13, 2021 at 02:22 AM Share Posted January 13, 2021 at 02:22 AM Let me add, though, that the Speaker should be able to put aside his or her personal feelings in order to bring members from North and South together. That's been one of Speaker Madigan's strengths. I don't think Rep Willis would be able to do that and, to a lesser extent, Rep Kifowit wouldn't either. Rep Williams might be the most able of those three to find that compromise. Rep Welch is in the mix now, too. He's also anti-gun (very anti-gun), and maybe too locked into Northern Illinois politics to be a good Speaker.

mauserme Posted January 13, 2021 at 02:44 AM Share Posted January 13, 2021 at 02:44 AM Grid lock can prevent bad things from happening?Yep. My answer was from the point of view that they will eventually choose a speaker. If that takes two years to accomplish I'd be fine with that. mauserme Posted January 13, 2021 at 12:10 PM Share Posted January 13, 2021 at 12:10 PM It's being reported this morning that Rep Welch is Michael Madigan's choice as his successor, despite allegations of Mr. Welch having physically abused a former girlfriend. mab22 Posted January 13, 2021 at 02:28 PM Share Posted January 13, 2021 at 02:28 PM There's nothing preventing a 2A friendly Republican from throwing their hat in for speaker. It would give the Democrats an opportunity to reach across the aisle in a bipartisan fashion and show that we are not a one party state. .....BWAHAHAHA who am I kidding.,

richp Posted January 14, 2021 at 08:44 PM Share Posted January 14, 2021 at 08:44 PM Just have to point out that nowhere have I seen that he also stepped down from control of the state Democrat party. When that happens and he no longer controls those monetary resources, he will be much more reduced in influence. Rich Phillips
EdDinIL Posted January 18, 2021 at 06:04 AM Share Posted January 18, 2021 at 06:04 AM Mark Maxwell, anchor at WCIA-3 in Champaign, tweeted earlier today that Madigan might be fully on his way out of the House. https://twitter.com/MarkMaxwellTV/status/1350924432932540416?s=20 Looking more and more like someone other than Michael Madigan will represent his district in Springfield for the first time in 50 years.
