This is all guns fault! /purple

Not so much failed policing as the failed city government and their inability to bring jobs and economic stability to these neighborhoods. I'm sure they'll all have a million excuses and just go on blaming "gun ownership", as if these murderers had FOIDs and CCW permits. Yeah right.

Violence plagues many Chicago neighborhoods. The staccato sound of gunfire echoes on streets and alleys. Blue lights illuminate darkened scenes. Tribune photographers are documenting how gun violence shocks and destabilizes neighborhoods — and how families cope with the constant pain of loss. This ongoing special report contains photo galleries, videos, links to Tribune crime apps and overnight accounts of crimes. Because of the nature of violence, you will encounter graphic images and explicit language. But please watch. Our city’s future is at risk.

Why is it "Under the Gun" and not "Under the Gang Banger" or something more accurate?

Wait till the summer gets here.

This. The nice warm weather we have had isn't even as warm as it will be in short order.

GFZ @ Parks didnot stop these Gang shootings!!

But...but...but... they forbade the law abiding carriers from carrying there because WE would be the problem? The parks prohibition is one of the most ridiculous of them all.

Some time ago, it was a "gang violence" and "gang related shooting." Now it's "gun violence" and "gun crimes". Must be better for tourism to say "gun" than "gang".

Not to be cynical but ... Because guns don't have a Granmama, Aunt Tutti Frutti and a store front Revrun that all vote for whoever the Democrat precinct captain tells them to vote for.

You could have kept that dumbass comment to your self. We all would have been better for it

A new prosecutorial unit to focus on how FEDERAL laws to focus solely on how best to use federal statutes to go after violence.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2014-04-21/news/chi-feds-create-unit-to-combat-chicago-violence-20140421_1_chicago-violence-chicago-office-new-unit

This sounds promising to me because:

1) historically Chicago has lagged behind almost all other cities in enforcing federal gun laws.

2) the inner city has a constituency that is generally sympathetic towards the criminals spawned within it's own communities and the politicians they elect reflect that.

3) there has been an alliance between local politicians and gangs for many years, hampering state and local efforts to address gang violence:

4) the Illinois Black Caucus has blocked efforts to enact tougher state laws and sentencing for repeat weapons offenses.

This may be a way around the state and city gridlock that allows career criminals to spend most of their time free in the neighborhoods committing murder and mayhem.
