NRA announces Concealed Carry Curriculum

Dear Training Counselors:

With states that acknowledge the individual right to self-protection at an all-time high, trainers have asked the NRA to develop a training course that meets the state requirements to apply for a permit and prepares students for the responsibility of carrying a concealed firearm. The NRA and the Education and Training Division has created the all-new NRA CCW course.

The NRA CCW course is modulated, so the Instructor can teach only the portions needed to meet the requirements of their state permitting process. Depending on those requirements, the course can vary in length from 1 to 16 hours and may (or may not) include a state-specific, non-NRA legal module and live-fire qualification.

The first NRA CCW courses will be held on May 4 and May 6 at the NRA Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas. These will be 8-hour Instructor courses open only to NRA Training Counselors who are also Pistol Instructors. There is no fee for this course, and all guns, holsters and training ammunition (UTM) are provided. You will be responsible for travel, lodging and meals. If you're interested in attending, email ddanielson@nrahq.org; your subject line must read "NRA CCW Instructor." Spaces are limited and will fill quickly on a first-come, first-served basis.

There are plans to conduct the NRA CCW course at other locations in 2018. Once a solid base of Training Counselors become certified to conduct CCW courses, NRA Training will step aside so these Training Counselors can teach students and create more Instructors. When the Training Counselors begin conducting courses, NRA CCW Instructor candidates will have to be NRA Pistol Instructors who have successfully completed the Basic NRA CCW course.

Wasn't the commentary during the rollout of the blended pistol class that the NRA didn't care about state laws?

maybe something good came of it then. there was a lot of bellowing and gnashing of teeth

be interesting to see what the NRA's class looks like

NRA basic pistol was not a good fit as part of a CCW training scheme. Makes more sense to have a practical CCW oriented class.

Sounds like it will be some time before it actually becomes available for instructors to offer it though.

NRA Basic Pistol is not accepted by every range towards the 16 hrs even though ISP says it can be. They also don't make it clear on the NRA website that you must pay $60 for the course AND pay for an instructor lead portion ($150+ depending on your area) for the course to be "complete".

Dear Training Counselors:

With states that acknowledge the individual right to self-protection at an all-time high, trainers have asked the NRA to develop a training course that meets the state requirements to apply for a permit and prepares students for the responsibility of carrying a concealed firearm. With that goal in mind, the NRA Education and Training Division has created the all-new NRA CCW course.

The NRA CCW course is broken up into modules, so the Instructor can teach only the portions needed to meet the requirements of their state permitting process. Depending on those requirements, the course can vary in length from 1 to 16 hours and may (or may not) include a state-specific, non-NRA legal module and live-fire qualification.

The first NRA CCW course was held at the NRA Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas. The NRA Training Department is now taking this course on the road to select locations around the country. These will be two-day instructor courses for NRA Training Counselors who are currently certified Pistol Instructors. The fee for the course will be $250. You will be responsible for travel, lodging, and associated expenses, and a gear list will be emailed to you after registering. Spaces are limited and will fill quickly on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once a solid base of Training Counselors become certified to conduct CCW courses, the NRA Training cadre will step aside so these Training Counselors can teach students and create more Instructors. When the Training Counselors begin conducting Instructor-level courses, NRA CCW Instructor candidates will have to be NRA Pistol Instructors who have successfully completed the Basic NRA CCW course.

Locations scheduled so far:

  • Victorville, California, June 23-24
  • Woodland Park, New Jersey, July 7-8
  • Denver, Colorado, July 21-22

If you are interested in attending, email trainingcounselor@nrahq.org. Your email's subject line must read "NRA CCW Instructor" -- and please indicate which location you wish to attend.

They sure don't seem that interested in getting this out there. Instructors have to take the class first as a student, am I reading that correctly? TC's have to go to some communist enclave in order to be able to teach it? Seems poorly thought out top to bottom.

That or they think there will be a flood of interest in out-of-state CCW classes due to nationwide reciprocity which seems improbable at best at this point.

....... Instructors have to take the class first as a student, am I reading that correctly? ......

YES, The NRA requires their instructors to learn how to teach a skill before they issue certification. Is that surprising? Do you assume that instructors are somehow magically trained with the New NRA Nation wide cc training material?

Well, yes it is surprising. I have taken other instructor classes without having to attend the class first as a student. Do you think taking the class as a student properly prepares someone to be an instructor? Is there not going to be an instructor certification on top of having to take it as a student? If there is, what does taking it as a student before taking the instructor certification accomplish?

Basic Instructor courses do have the option for skilled instructor candidates qualifying in and skipping the student level. Advanced ratings of PPOTH or Defensive Pistol do require instructor candidates to complete the student and instructor level workshops to be certified to teach the skill. I think this is an instructor level class. Where did you come up with having to take the student level first?

The Training Counselor Guide was revised in March 2018. In that revision, the Training Department included a requirement for future Instructor Candidates to complete the Basic course BEFORE they are allowed in an Instructor certification course. Enforcement of this requirement was delayed until July 1 due to the possibility that previously scheduled courses would be populated by Instructor Candidates who lacked the opportunity to complete the Basic course in time to qualify.
