President Donald Trumps feds arrive in Chicago to fight gun crime

...On Thursday, authorities confirmed that about 20 additional agents with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been sent to Chicago to combat gun violence here....

...The ATF agents are working with about 20 counterparts from the Chicago Police Department and Illinois State Police on a strike force whose mission is to solve shootings and hunt down gun traffickers through ballistics technology.

Prosecutors from the U.S. attorneys office and Cook County states attorneys office have been assigned to the force to decide whether suspects in gun crimes should be charged in state or federal court.

The goal is the prosecute as many of these guys as possible federally where they will serve longer prison terms, said Anthony Riccio, head of the Chicago Police Departments organized crime unit....

...Riccio said the strike force, which officially began on June 1, has developed a bunch of leads so far.

One 9mm gun has been linked to 28 shootings, including several murders, on the West Side, Riccio said.

The strike force has also linked 14 different assault rifles to a spate of gang-related shootings on the Southwest Side, Riccio said.

Coulson said the strike force is different than previous surges in which ATF agents were sent to Chicago for months-long missions and then went home after a major prosecution was unveiled.

Its long term, he said. Theyre here permanently. Its not a flash-in-the-pan concept where they come here for a year and leave.

About 20 ATF officials have joined about 35 to 40 ATF agents who already were working in Chicago....

20. 200 maybe would make a dent in it. Its crazy out there.

I think you need something on the order of 3,000 agents.

The problem is that if CPD or Cook County Sheriff are the arresting officers, the criminals will not be charged under federal law. If anyone has followed the failed attempts to increase the sentencing of repeat felon UUW offenders, you'll know why gang members caught with guns aren't charged under the federal laws.

As long as the gangsters are funneled through the permissive Cook County criminal "justice" system - none of these criminals are not going to see lengthy stays in a federal prison.

The BATFE agents in Chicago are just going to try to coordinate activity. Maybe they'll rat out Kim Foxx and the corrupt Cook County system so Donald can tweet it out - but they're not out there actually arresting the gang members who are carrying guns and shooting the neighborhoods up.

A federal agent does not need to be the arresting officer in order for federal charges to be brought against the defendant.

More often than not, the arresting agency brings the case to the US Attorney's Office because they know the defendant is eligible for a longer sentence under federal law than state law. The USAO rarely, if ever, takes a case unless they know they will get a conviction.

You know, it wouldn't hurt if they were able to get a few hired in to IDOC as Correctional Officers. The amount of chatter and open talk about weapons that convicted felons have waiting for them at home is astounding. I can't imagine the things being detailed in the recorded phone conversations. I've written reports and passed info along to the appropriate unit, only for it to be shrugged off. And then everybody wants to act like it's such a surprise when a guy makes parole but quickly commits a violent crime involving an illegal firearm. If only 25% of the chatter was true, it would still lead to a staggering amount of illegal firearms being removed from the access of convicted felons, with many of those felons being known gang members. Designate 20 ATF agents to be paired with Parole Officers to do Parole/Police compliance checks on guys released. It'd be a win-win. Some of the lazy Parole Officers would be made to get off their butts and do something, better utilizing their time, and more illegal guns would be removed from the possession of individuals that are a part major of the *actual* problem.

Wait....that'd make sense and undercut the current agenda. Can't be doing things that make sense in this state now can we?

Well if the CPD and Cook County Sheriffs started charging these guys under 18 U.S.C. 922(g) that would be something...

OK, let's see how this plays out.

CPD arrests an "honor student" whose mother calls the alderman. That alderman was elected with the help of the "honor roll" student's buddies in the gang.

The alderman calls the CPD and gets the cop to drop the charges or not show up at the trial, threatening him with all kinds of things aldecritters are good at.

Police officer thinks "I'm not risking my pension over this kid" so he won't show up at the Federal trial, case dismissed.

That's why I'm saying the ATF would need something like 3000 agents. They'd basically have to replace the CPD and Cook County Sheriff, they'd have to be making the arrests - maybe they'd need more like 11,000 - I don't know...

Maybe those extra BATFE agents can teach the FBI to shut off their cars and lock the doors when they leave a vehicle unattended with gear inside

http://abc7chicago.com/news/source-fbi-agents-car-stolen-on-west-side/2176703/

According tyo SCC the guns were a Glock 17, Glock 22, Glock 27, and an M4.

I wonder if the M4 is select fire?

Per SunTimes http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/police-search-for-vehicle-stolen-on-near-west-side/

..."An FBI SUV containing several firearms and tactical gear was found Monday evening, hours after it was stolen on the Near West Side, authorities said.

The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox was found at 7:21 p.m. in the 900 block S. Leavitt, about two blocks away from the FBI offices, according to Chicago Police."...

EDIT it apparently was found after getting a parking ticket

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-fbi-agent-s-car-weapons-and-gear-stolen-in-chicago-s-west-loop-20170703-story.html

..."Later Monday, police were able to track down the SUV after a parking ticket was issued to it while it was parked in the 900 block of South Leavitt Street, about 2 miles from where it was stolen, police said.

Monday night, uniformed and plainclothes investigators huddled on Leavitt Street, where the SUV sat with a its gas cap undone and a parking ticket on the window less than a half-mile away from the FBI Chicago Field Office, which could be seen from the scene.

Authorities hadn't searched inside the vehicle to see if any of the weapons were still inside. Instead, officers called for a tow truck to take it to be processed. Another vehicle was found earlier in the day with some of the gear inside, but not the handguns, an official said."...
