I've had some success in getting a pro-2nd Amendment viewpoint into the local newspapers on occasion. Last year I had one published in the Trib, today one was published in the Rockford Register Star. Maybe it will help open up some eyes if not change some minds. Here is the letter:

"Infringement upon 2nd Amendment is a travesty

The column in the March 10 paper ('Too Many Children Die in Gun Related Deaths') that calls for more gun control is a distorted and misleading, politically slanted diatribe.

The statistics presented, that 1,200 'children' have died due to gun related violence since the Parkland shooting is more than misleading. What is their definition of 'children”?

This number is primarily gang members, who might be teenagers, killing each other with regularity, criminals for whom no new laws will have the slightest impact other than to increase the vulnerability of law abiding citizens. The lament about the NRA opposing 'gun research' by the CDC is an outright lie.

The NRA opposes the use of taxpayer funds for the purpose of advancing the political goal of gun control.

Truly impartial research into any aspect of gun violence is not opposed, and in fact would be welcomed by the NRA and its supporters. But so-called research that starts with the conclusion that the answer to violence is more restrictions on law abiding gun owners is not something that should be supported.

All of us wish to see a more peaceful nation, with less crime and violence of all types. But the way to achieve that is not by disarming the law abiding, denying them the very tools by which we can protect ourselves from the predators and thugs in our communities. Excessive infringement upon the Second Amendment is a travesty, not a solution to violence on our streets.
