Downers Grove

Yes I have CCL lots of different areas up there where you canât.

So I guess the answer is yes?

You do understand the concept of "preempts home rule", do you not? I mean, if you are asking if you can carry in a specific establishment in Downers Grove, or if you can carry a laser or a 19 round magazine in Downers Grove, that might be a different story, but last time I checked, Downers Grove is in Illinois and has to follow Illinois rules where home rule is preempted.

I don't think preemption is understood by a lot of people, even those with licenses.

That sounds like an instructor fail.

I have to disagree. I get tired of everyone always blaming the instructors.

I have taught plenty of classes and I can tell you that a lot of the students just don't retain what they were taught or don't pay attention. For starters, some students are in the class just to get through it and get their license.

I have personally had students call me with questions pertaining to the laws that were covered extensively in class. Either they weren't paying attention or just didn't retain what was taught.

Sorry for the rant, I just get tired of everyone jumping on the blame the instructor band wagon.

I am an instructor jumping on instructors here. Yes, I too have had students call me after classes for clarification on some points. But preemption is something I spend a fair amount of time on, because it is that important. But hey, maybe I'm just cranky.

Can I legally carry in Downers Grove?

It is good idea to review the law once in a while.

https://www.ispfsb.com/Public/AboutTheAct.aspx

Also, the Posted! Anti-gun List link at the top of each page here is an excellent source. The app is also available for smart phones, both android and iPhone.

The 99 cent cost is well worth the money.

Proportionally more venues are posted up here than downstate, but very few here are. The app will be helpful.

If a place is posted, you can decide if you wish to go to a different facility or lock you gun in the car (as prescribed by law) and go in.

Edited 5/29/18 to list cost of the Posted! app.

Problems can be from both instructors and students. I took my class in December 2013. I read over the law several times before I came to class. I had taken a personal protection class several years ago in California taught by Peter Alan Kasler. I had read "In the Gravest Extreme" as well as several articles over the years. I am also retired military.

My instructor mostly just sat on a stool reading from a text. He was not the best, but I stilled paid attention. Maybe he was better on day one, which I did not have to attend.

Some of the comments that I have read in various threads here lead me to believe that other instructors do a more thorough job than I experienced. Still it is the duty of anyone who carries to remain informed by accessing sites like this, reading appropriate books and article, and taking additional classes. Walking out of class with a certificate does not end one's responsibility.

Yes, this is what happens when it's a 16 hour class. Most people (like myself) would rather just do two 8hr days and get it over with. It's a lot of material in a short time and honestly people are only worried about passing the shooting test. So a lot of people space out and start daydreaming in the class. There's also no written test. Plus laws are being changed. It's a disaster.

Actually the Posted! app (for iPhone and for Android) is $.99. I have to pay for the servers to host it all & stuff. :) But the web version is free, just has more limited functionality.

And to the OP. Downers Grove isn't particularly anti-gun. But even in a city that is (Chicago), you can carry most places. You can carry everywhere except places prohibited by statute (23 of them) and businesses who have posted the ISP "no guns" sign (which are cataloged in the Posted! app).

Sorry for the error. I had downloaded the app to my phone a long time ago and had forgotten about the charge. It is an excellent tool which I use often.

I have edited my post above.
