Discussion on .22 Target Pistols

If you were given your choice of .22 target pistols - what would you choose? And please do not limit your choices to new pistols. Used pistols, now out of production, are allowed for this survey. All choices should be a .22 cal. pistol, No revolvers, please.

I bought a used S&W 22A that was dirt cheap and is an awesome shooter. I enjoy being at the indoor range shooting silver dollar sized groups with a .22 next to people hardly on paper with their manly 9mm and .45s.

I have a two full sized .22s and two subcompact .22s and none are even close to as accurate as the 22A.

A high standard like the military contract one my dad bought from the property disposal Office back in '55.

It'S 60 PLUS years old and still accurate.

I have a High Standard HD Military from the early '50s. It's my favorite .22 semi. I wish I had more than the one magazine.

My Buckmark and Ruger Mark lll are also fun shooters. I'd love to have a Colt Woodsman.

I also have a S&W 617-2. Great 10 round shooter with the best trigger of the bunch. Sorry to include a revolver. This one deserves a mention.

While I have all the above and agree they are all good, I have to cast a vote for one not mentioned. The Browning Challenger and Challenger II. I bought a Challenger in 1972 for $98 otd. Still have it, been shot a lot, still looks like new. I never bothered to order extra magazines back in the day, now it's not unusual to find them for 25-50 dollars more than the pistol cost new.

Depending on how "serious"

and how much $$$$ you want to spend

two of the best target 22. cal pistols

What advantage does that type of grip have? They always seem large, with a huge flat base.

In a "reasonable budget" Ruger MK2 government target model or slab side competition model noted above. Best tack driver for the $$ any day of the week. Can be had for $300 or less if you're patient.

Next up is a S&W model 41. A classic that shoots like crazy.

Above that price point you get into exotic or specialized competition guns.

For accurate target shooting, really make your choice between the Buckmark or Ruger Mk series. Both are great pistols, reliable, and will eat all kinds of ammo. In the past, I'd say Buckmark hands down because at least it is slightly easier to break down than the Ruger Mk...but then Ruger released the MK IV.

For range ammo munching? Yeah...the SR-22 is a great little pistol (and more accurate than you may think). I have one and it's been superb.

I have two Browning Buck Marks that have been through an estimated 15,000 rounds between them. Each has been fully torn down and rebuilt once, so far. They still shoot great, are reliable, and rarely have issues with ammo. There's also lots of after-market parts available if you like to customize them.
