How long for a FOID card

Recommended Posts

I put my wife's application in the mail on 2/22/15, We're counting down the days :)

That's what this is for my wife's FOID I want to see if they are getting them done in 30 days or not.

Based on the thread I started last week it sounds like they are getting them done in 30 days. I would say the heat is on now because nobody wants a suit claiming they're holding up FCCL process.

So the OP is asking about the FOID or the FCCL ?

We got our FOID's back together in about 6 weeks some time ago!

And the process for FCCL is posted every other thread throughout the boards here.

Two different processes IMHO!

Topic clearly says FOID. For most of us the FOID is a precursor to the FCCL so I'd imagine there are grounds for a complaint if delaying the FOID leads to a delay in the FCCL

Right about FOID only I was just trying to see if State Police is following the law and either approve or deny all applications within 30 days from the date the applications are received. On the State Police application page they have a notices that reads.

ATTENTION!

Currently the Illinois State Police Firearms Services Bureau is experiencing a record number of Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card applications each month. Accordingly, the Illinois State Police encourages applicants to allow ample time for production and delivery of their new/renewed cards.

Their website always says that as if it's some sort of excuse.

I thought I lost my FOID - called the state Police to find out process to get new FOID. They stated that they are currently running about 60 days behind.

I was lucky, I found my FOID - if lost, you must reapply and go through the full process again.

I could not figure out how to link the post (not the thread.. only the post) so here is a cut & past from the thread:

Got the wife her FOID a few months ago.. The picture was the biggest PITA to get the wife to hold still for.. They used her DL picture, not the one sent in with the app so all that for nothing.. (taking the pic, sizing, printing, trimming, etc.)

FYI.. The check cleared four days after mailing the app. My bank does not send me my checks but I can view them online.

There will be a sticker put on the face of your check.. This will be your FOID number. I checked her FOID using the ISP's website. It came back as valid (5 days after mailing).

Two weeks after that, it arrived in the mail. So start to finish... About three weeks.

I applied for FOID on Jan 23rd and it arrived Mar 6th(42 days). I applied for CCL 12 days ago while my FOID was still pending. I updated my CCL application yesterday with my new FOID number. Hopefully going through both applications around the same time will speed up my CCL. Edited by OneMoreTime

Has anyone (from here) applied for the FOID and CCL at the same time yet? What's the time frame on it then? Any different?

No expert here but I thought a valid FOID is a prerequisite so I can't figure out how you could apply for both at the same time.. Thinking back, I had to have an FOID in order to take the CCL classes.

You don't have to have a FOID to do the application, however your application won't be accepted until you give them a valid FOID number. At the beginning of the app, just indicate you don't have a FOID and it lets you continue, but tells you the application won't be considered until you come back and enter a valid FOID.

In 2011, I sent my FOID renewal out April 12th. And on June 6th I still hadn't received my FOID so I called Illinois State Police.

I did check my bank account and they cashed my $10.00 check for the processing fee on April 20, 2011.

The ISRA site gave me a warning that there would be a message telling me that if I hadn't waited 56 days then I should call back when 56 days have elapsed. Actually the canned answering message says that if I had not waited 57 days.. then I should call back when 57 days have elapsed. I was also told that I would have a 19 minute wait time to speak to a representative.

After 19 minutes I did speak with a live person, she told me that since 68 days had not elapsed I should call back in the future. I said "wait a minute, you mean 57 days right? She said no - that the current processing time for a FOID was running 68 days, and she also told me that they hadn't received my application until May 3rd.

I said "Wait a minute - I have a bank statement that shows that you cashed my check on April 20th" to which she replied "Our department, the department that actually processes the FOID, didn't receive your application until May 3rd. She strongly hinted that the 68 day timer only started on May 3rd .

It took me almost 4 months in 2011 just to renew my FOID, 4 months from the time I mailed the application to the time I received the card.

My wife got her FOID today in the mail. So far less than 30 days. Regular mail with a cashiers check.

  • 1 month later...
  • 9 months later...

Received my FOID card in the mail yesterday, 46 days after I applied. Not as timely as 30 days, but not too bad either. The tough part was waiting and not have updates on the process.

Next step for me is to take a CCL classes and apply for license.

Good luck to all who are waiting for their FOID.

Last thread got archived, so I'll update this one with my FOID card timelines:

* FOID submitted 5/23/16

* FOID 'QC_APPROVED' 'inspect element' 5/29/16

* FOID 'APPROVED' in 'inspect element' 6/7/16

* Went active 6/9/16 (2.5 weeks)

I also had a good experience with the FOID support. My browser had auto-filled one of the fields for me, so my "Unit #" was in my address twice. I didn't want it to to cause any problems down the road so I opened a ticket. Someone responded within 10 minutes and had updated the address I used to apply. I was.. kind of impressed.

Assuming the FOID card comes this week, I will be impressed with the timeline, that'll be like 21-25 days start-to-finish.

I'll update this thread with CCW times, too - website is down right now but I'll finish my app tomorrow morning.
