U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, held an invitation-only meeting Sunday in Batavia with stakeholders and gun violence prevention advocacy groups hoping they will help mobilize efforts this summer for gun reform.

The U.S. House earlier this year passed a bill expanding federal background checks for gun purchases and transfers, and another measure that would increase the waiting period that licensed firearm dealers and licensees have to wait from 3 to 10 days.

"We all know that we have a long road ahead in getting these changes made into law," Underwood said at a news conference after her meeting.

Among those in attendance were members of the Kane and Kendall county groups of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America; state Rep. Karina Villa, D-West Chicago; Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke and Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns.

Burns is the guy who was going to grant them police protection at their public meetings to protect them from US! They think we want to hurt them!!!!! Last document

And heres some discussion involving the Batavia mayor and Geneva mayor from earlier this year

Possibly the same article: https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/aurora-beacon-news/ct-abn-underwood-gun-violence-st-0624-20190623-vcplm5brq5frldsn6v65zjvnhu-story.html

"I don't think bump stocks and assault weapons that can spit multiple rounds in a minute are necessary for people to have for protection in their home," Korellis told The Beacon-News.

"We had a 100 people in the lecture hall. If the shooter had an assault weapon I would not be here today," he said.

So ill informed.

They just can't handle the facts that uncover their lies.

My friend dealt with this same, closed off attitude with MDA. He went to their Aurora meeting (he had to cover them as a story for his journalism class) and went from being on the fence about the gun issue, to uber pro-gun because of how they received him.

What did they do?

From what I understand, they did not believe he was a student there covering the meeting - they thought he was with the NRA. His main complaints/comments were:

1) Despite wearing his student ID, he feels they did not believe he was who he told them he was

2) They told him to go to the back of the room when he started shooting footage; he told me the room laughed at him, but he managed anyhow because he feared failing his classes more than the embarrassment

3) At the end, they asked him what he would do with the footage because they were afraid of the NRA and afraid of being mentioned in social media. Now, my friend, incidentally was interning under an entire law office of attorneys when this happened. He was aware he was in his rights to record in public, but because he was so nice, he actually deleted the footage he shot after he used it for a school project. He mentioned all his references: the name of his school, the name of the law office intern sponsor he was working under, school professors and the room number and name of the professor who taught that class - despite all of this, he perceives MDA did not believe him.

4) Not every MDA member was closed off, but he told me the leadership gave him an impression of being very controlling and micro-managing (those were his impressions). While the Chicago MDA chapter was absolutely helpful interviewing and helping my buddy with his journalism assignment, he found the opposite with Kane/Kendall chapter. He also told me a Chicago political opposition research firm looked up his Linkedin profile, the days following the meeting but told me he would not be looking into it because he's busy trying to find employment after college and just does not have the time to deal with drama.

5) He (my friend) ended up identifying as extremely pro-gun, more or less because of what he saw in his criminal defense internship and also because of the Julie Morrison video - that made him livid - he thought MDA was just about locking guns up from toddlers.

I still keep in touch with him (my friend) but those were his five points. Both myself and my friend believe MDA is more splintered because of their leadership.

Disclaimer to the above posted (because I was not able to post my last edit): this was my friends experience. It's water under the bridge for him. He doubts anyone at MDA would have looked him up on Linkedin. I wanted to make that very clear for the readers here.

I don't understand? Do they call the police on people who attend their public meetings? This is confusing.

MDA is requesting police protection from the Geneva mayor at their public meetings (which he is happy to oblige). Since your friend was at the aurora meeting mentioned......

Ah, I see. That is unfortunate. IIRC, the Kane County Sheriff showed up at the meeting my friend attended for his school project.

well, if it was the one right after Henry Pratt, that’s the meeting they’re refering to. If it was a different one, then they’re on guard because we are all such “violent people” lol

It would be interesting if other groups scheduled informational, public meetings and demanded police protection for those. It could be pro-gun groups or groups having nothing to do with guns at all. There are potentially hundreds of possibilities, all with an equal right to the free security services the Batavia Police Department graciously offers not just its residents, but residents of neighboring communities who have something to say in Batavia.

All in the spirit of equality ....

If they offer a free government service to any group, then they better offer it to all groups or establish non-discriminatory criteria describing who is eligible to receive the service and who is not. Being anti-gun, or subscribing to any other political belief doesn't cut it.

Police departments answer to mayors. Mayors do what gets them votes. Of course there will be political agendas behind who gets "service" and who doesn't.

Different one. There were no cameras at the meeting right after Pratt.

Well, looks like MDA is paranoid now that people who don’t agree with them will be attending publicly available meetings. The horror!!!!!

Edit: repost. I shared my original post with my friend. He requested I do a repost because he wanted to take some time to

reflect about his experience. He thought some of his initial comments were not relevant, because they were too speculative in substance so I've reposted his comments accordingly. I went ahead and asked my friend (again) because I wanted to make sure I got everything clear about his interactions with MDA..

He went to the April 14th, MDA meeting that was held at Aurora Public Library. He was attending for a school project. This was not something he was enthusiastic about, especially with the weather being terrible; he went because it was something he needed to get done for an assignment. He helped them setup their room, and when people started to come in he got a seat and began taking footage with his phone. He was trying to get footage for a small media spot he was doing with his journalism class. The leader of that particular meeting was nervous about being recorded, telling him to stop filming her and go to the back of the room instead. He did this, but did not stop filming footage of that meeting - because he had an assignment for school. He obliged and went to the back, but did not stop filming the meeting.

He told me he left feeling awkward, because he felt they did not believe him when he informed them of his student credentials and his school project. He was asked about what he'd do with his footage. He told them it was for a school project and agreed to delete the footage he shot, after he wrapped this up. He deleted the footage, despite believing he was within his rights to record the meeting because my friend wanted to be diplomatic and kind. One of the MDA leaders did apologize for the awkward situation, they ended up helping him locate a better person to interview for his project (the footage he shot had no sound because his thumb was covering the microphone).

For my friend, he's moved on. This whole situation is water under the bridge for him. He's chalked it up as a valuable learning experience for being calm when the other side is afraid of talking. His views have obviously changed from being on the fence, to being uber pro-gun since that time. He credits his change in perspective to the pro-gun side not being afraid to be filmed, and open to showing him what they were about at the time. He did not like how MDA does not like people filming their events. That is something that just had him decide not to ever go back to their meetings. He told me that if a movement (MDA) is serious about their message and proud of it, they should not be ashamed of their message being recorded or written about - let alone criticized.
