Excellent report from Fox Illinois in Springfield:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) Fear swept the country after the deadly church shooting in Texas, and it's the scary reality of the world we live in today that anything can happen anywhere, at any time. Fox's Esther Kwon reports about how a local pastor is reassuring his congregation.

A church is a sanctuary - a sacred place for many. However, we've seen churches - along with schools, movie theaters, and malls - become targets for mass shooters.

At Destiny Church in Springfield, it's not just the pews that are packed. Senior Pastor Eric Hansen is packing heat. "It's not something, I guess, that you ever hope to use," he said. "But I don't hope to use the fire extinguishers that are in this room, either."

Pastor Hansen is ready to save your soul and your life. "The pastor, who is charged with protecting sheep, can have that ability," he explained.

Amen! And I like his quote about the fire extinguishers. IMO defensively-carried firearms are just like fire extinguishers and car's airbags. I hopefully will never be in the situation to need one to safe my life; but if I ever do, I'll really need it. And it's much better to have it and never need it, than to need it and not have it.

We have a robust security presence in our church. And there aren't any "gun free zone" signs on the doors either.

As for Jesus: the Lord said if your enemy slaps you in the face, to turn the other cheek. He never said to let your enemy slit your throat. And He SURE never said to let them lay a hand on your family, or anybody else you are responsible for.

The Gospel is never to be spread on the tip of a sword. But self-defense against deadly force is allowed. I don't think the Lord spoke the words in Luke 22:35-38 in reference "to hunting".

Luke 22:36

Jesus said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.

Luke 22:38

The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That’s enough!” he replied.

Nehemiah 4:9

We prayed to our God and posted a guard…”

For Catholics,

CCC 2263 The legitimate defense of persons and societies is not an exception to the prohibition against the murder of the innocent that constitutes intentional killing. "The act of self-defense can have a double effect: the preservation of one's own life; and the killing of the aggressor. . . . The one is intended, the other is not."

CCC 2264 Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate to insist on respect for one's own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow:

If a man in self-defense uses more than necessary violence, it will be unlawful: whereas if he repels force with moderation, his defense will be lawful. . . . Nor is it necessary for salvation that a man omit the act of moderate self-defense to avoid killing the other man, since one is bound to take more care of one's own life than of another's.
