Crime on CTA/Mass Transit ... Reports and Data

For rise that forget the outright lying that occurred during the staged "debate", please remember the following:

Here's the Wednesday Sun Times, talking about the CCW hearings, and brave Representative Mell and her stand against guns on trains.

Wish someone in Springfield on Tuesday had a copy of the Sun Times handy to counter her argument. Get a load of the headline:

Yes, the same day she made her claims about "gunfights" that would be the fault of law-abiding licenses.

The vote was 65-45. Wonder what it would be today? By the time there is a chance to vote on this again, it will a year since licenses began to be issued. I would like to have a complete list of crimes committed on mass transit, at the stops, and in the parking lots.

That will take a lot of gathering but, I think with all of us together, we can get it done.

It sounds like there was some kind of altercation before the knife was pulled, and the details here seem scant. For example, if the wounded victim threatened knife guy, you could argue knife guy was defending himself from an assault. I'm not saying that's what happened, but I'm just saying with the details available, I'm not sure if the cut guy would have qualified as a legitimate DGU.

I'm wondering if HeyJackass! would be able to pull out the CTA/METRA data? Can't find a way to contact them, though, and that data breakout doesn't show on their website. Anybody got a contact?

They have a twitter account and a facebook page. (links at top right of their web page)

E-mail listed is w.h.thompson@heyjackass.com

I tried compiling a list of fatalities on CTA and in parks and playgrounds through the red eye death database, but only found a handful with enough data to discern the story, as well as if the offender had a criminal history.

To say all murders receive different degrees of media coverage is an understatement.

Hey Jackass uses a few different sources of data, but the main source that they use is the Chicago Crime Portal.

One of the problems with trying to quantify CTA crime is that the crime must take place on or in actual CTA property for it to be assigned the "CTA" location code in the Chicago crime portal.
So if someone is accosted on the sidewalk outside of a CTA station, or 10 feet from a CTA bus stop - the location is not noted as "CTA nnn", the location is noted as "SIDEWALK".
Also, many parking facilities, while they are right next to the CTA and used almost exclusively by CTA patrons, are not actually part of the CTA. Even some parking facilities which say "CTA Parking" might not be CTA property, I'm assuming the CTA has entered into some revenue sharing scheme with the property owners or something. So if a person is victimized in a CTA parking lot - the crime might not have "CTA" as the location code, it will have the street address of the parking facility.
Even though its not perfect, the data paints a horrible picture of victimization in on the CTA

Opps - I published the results above from Jan 2014, the results changed after about 45 days. I'm not sure what all causes the change - probably bad reporting and reclassification of crimes but the revised numbers are:

1 homicide at a CTA location in 2013
5 criminal sexual assaults attempted or committed at CTA locations in 2013.
3 criminal sexual assaults.
1 non-aggravated criminal sexual assault.
2 aggravated criminal sexual assault involving a knife / cutting instrument
2 attempted criminal sexual assaults, both non-aggravated.
197 armed robberies or attempted armed robberies at CTA locations in 2013
184 armed robberies.
13 attempted armed robberies.
30 aggravated robberies or attempted aggravated robberies at CTA locations in 2013
28 aggravated robberies.
2 attempted aggravated robberies.
539 "strongarm" robberies or attempted "strongarm" robberies at CTA locations in 2013
496 "strongarm" robberies.
43 attempted "strongarm" robberies.
Summary for robberies: 766 times people were targets for being forcibly robbed, 58 times the attempts were unsuccessful, 708 times people were robbed.
96 cases of serious assault or serious battery at CTA locations in 2013.
63 cases of aggravated battery involving aggravated battery of a senior citizen, a handgun,
knife/cutting instrument or other dangerous weapon.
33 cases of aggravated assault involving a handgun. knife/cutting instrument or other dangerous weapon.

Excellent stats.

Time to use these to eliminate 65(8).

Beyond a doubt the dumbest CPZ created by the Act. WTH wouldn't the CTA & Metra want what would amount to free private security services? The most convenient crime available. Hop on a bus or train, peruse your shopping list of victims, commit the crime of of your choice, hop off said bus or train, hop on another and get away.

We all need to get to work on our state legislators. All this collected data needs to find its way into a press release; surely, some news media or other will bite on it.

Another example of rehabilitation through the incarceration process in Jails for violent offenders. What a freekin joke. They come out meaner, more agressive and intollerant than when they went in. And they learn more about the law than the common citizen so that it can be used to dictake their actions and your re-action to pad their bank accounts when you step on their civil liberties.

Remember its all about the children you know and someone needs to protect them when riding public transportation along with law abiding adults.

NBC 5 did this story on CTA crime in January 2014 : http://www.nbcchicago.com/investigations/Data-Shows-Which-CTA-Stations-Are-Most-Dangerous-242874801.html

CBS 2 did an investigative report on CTA crimes, and how they keep the bulletins and videos under wraps: http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/05/13/2-investigators-cta-keeps-crime-bulletins-under-wraps/

Not only is CPD lying to us reclassifying crimes to keep their statistics from looking too bad, but CTA is definitely hiding info from the public.

Ooh! I love the Huffington links. Huffington screams anti-gun almost daily, and is a news source preferred by antis. Even if we waived statistics from their favorite media source in their face they'd still say, "That data has been disprove." without citing counter data or sources. That's when we need to jump on that and hammer away at discrediting that individual.
