Bore snakes are good for quick cleanings, or to loosen up fouling before a conventional barrel cleaning. I use them quite a bit, but not as a primary means of keeping bore/barrel clean. Some people are fine with running one through a time or two and pronouncing it "clean." It's a matter of preference and anal retentiveness. Downside is the plastic jags are delicate and tend to break. I've tried the Otis cleaning system (brush on a snake) for pistols and hated it.
