This investigation is being spurred on by Madigan, over the Trump representation. I'm not sure why people think this will implicate Madigan in any way.

What kind of influence does Madigan have over the feds?

Ask Rod Blagojevich

SecondCityCop conjectures that the first raid bugged his office, so the feds went back for the stuff the bugs revealed since then. Well, I'd say they probably had some info that there was more to find. Maybe it was a bug, maybe not.
The thing is you don't need to bug offices anymore. You're surrounded by bugs, all the FBI needs to do is talk to the service provider.

Feds charge Ald. Ed Burke with corruption:

Longtime Ald. Edward Burke, one of Chicago’s most powerful figures and a vestige of the city’s old Democratic machine, has been charged with attempted extortion for allegedly using his position as alderman to corruptly solicit business for his private law firm.

The 37-page criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court comes five weeks after the FBI carried out a stunning raid on Burke’s City Hall office, working for hours behind windows covered with brown butcher paper before leaving down a back staircase with computers and files.

According to the one count, Burke in 2017 tried to extort a company that owns fast-food restaurants in the Chicago area and needed help with permits for a remodeling job.

The evidence includes numerous recorded calls from Burke’s cell phone as well as emails and other documents, according to the complaint, which was filed Wednesday and unsealed Thursday.

The complaint also alleged Burke illegally solicited a campaign donation from an executive with the restaurant company for another politician, who is not named in the charges.

Burke is expected to turn himself in Thursday afternoon for an initial appearance at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse before a magistrate judge.

Burke's wife, of course, is Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke.

I don't pray, but for this I'll make an exception. Please Baby Jesus, make this be true.

Apparently, the rumors that he was 'too smart' to leave a trail of evidence appears to be false.

I wonder how many other Chicago Machine people just went out and got new burner cell phones and service today, LOL.

Hmm, Burger King.

Sources said it was a Burger King located at 4060 S. Pulaski Road. — the same restaurant that Laquan McDonald passed by moments before he was fatally shot by a Chicago police officer in October 2014.

{/quote]

and I can't believe that someone at the Trib thought that linkage to that shooting was relevant.

This clearly went ahead with Madigan's approval.

This is a federal prosecution. Madigan has no say in it.

Being an Illinois Supreme Court justice, Burke's wife will have no official contact with the case.

Any motions or appeals will go through the federal court system.

He probably has a nice big safe for his guns in his office written off as a business expense.

Uhoh.

Campaign money tied to Ald. Edward Burkes alleged extortion scheme was intended for County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, sources say

The campaign contribution that federal prosecutors allege powerful Ald. Edward Burke requested as part of an extortion scheme was intended for Cook County Board President and Chicago mayoral candidate Toni Preckwinkle, according to two sources familiar with the investigation.

In a criminal complaint unsealed Thursday, federal authorities alleged that Burkeillegally solicited a campaign donation from an executive with a restaurant company for an unnamed politician. Burke made the request around December 2017, at the same time authorities alleged he tried to extort executives with a company that owns fast food restaurants in the Chicago region and was seeking approval of permits for remodeling work at a location in Burkes ward.

The Chicago Tribune previously has reported that Burke held a Jan. 19, 2018 fundraiser for Preckwinkle at his Gage Park home, and the sources confirmed that the campaign contribution the 14th ward alderman allegedly solicited illegally was for the Cook County Board president. According to the Burke criminal complaint, however, the politician since identified as Preckwinkle did not report the contribution to state election officials. State law requires all political contributions to be reported by candidates.

Preckwinkles campaign did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

The revelation that Preckwinkle, who also is the chairwoman of the Cook County Democratic Party, was the intended recipient of the campaign contribution as part of Burkes attempted extortion could prove deeply damaging to her mayoral aspirations. She is considered a front runner in a field of 16 candidates running in the Feb. 26 race to replace outgoing Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

In addition to the campaign contribution to the unnamed candidate, Burke also allegedly sought to gain tax business at his law firm Klaftner & Burke in exchange for the City Hall approvals the company needed for its restaurant project, according to the complaint.

Burke sought the political contribution during a meeting with the restaurant executives in December 2017. Burke hosted a fundraiser for Preckwinkle weeks later.

At the time, Preckwinkle faced a primary challenge against former Ald. Bob Fioretti, in her bid for a third term as the countys chief executive. Preckwinkle would go on to defeat Fioretti in the March primary and win re-election unopposed in November.

23 guns in his office alone??? The anti-gunners better start calling him an off the rocker, gun crazed gun-aholic and demanding action!!!!!!

Ummm. Lemme think about this for a nanosecond.

23 guns in his City Hall office.

By state statute, city hall is a gun free zone. That is 23 violations of state statutes, even though they firearms were uncovered by a federal search warrant.

Will Fast Eddie Burke be charged with violating state statutes even if his wife is a state Supreme Court Justice?

How do you spell selective prosecution again?

Burke wears a badge. I believe it's one of those conservator of the peace BS I'm special and above the law type badges that used to confer the ability to conceal a gun before the FCCL. I'd bet his safe is covered under that "exemption".

What law would apply? The FCCA addresses concealed carry. Metra stations are off-limits to CC, but apparently FOID carry in OK. Would FOID also apply to his city hall office.

I do not know.

He wears a star. He likes to show it off too. In this news clip he was walking around holding his coat open so everyone can see it, for those who didn't know who he was I guess.
