TRJ Posted January 11, 2019 at 08:55 PM Share Posted January 11, 2019 at 08:55 PM Still eyeballing a new .308 bolt gun. In my looking around I see causal mention of checking out the Bergara. It's cheaper, and it seems nicer than the Tikka from what I see of people shooting them on YouTube. It looks like the Bergara has a smoother action and better more reliable ejection (doesn't fumble or dribble out cases). Anybody handle either or both have impressions to share? Mr_Rich Posted January 12, 2019 at 02:55 AM Share Posted January 12, 2019 at 02:55 AM I have a T3x CTR in 308. I like it a lot and have had it for a little over a year. I haven't had any ejection or any other issues with my Tikka. Everyone that's shot it has been impressed. ETA I'm a member at ASC if you want to try it sometime. TRJ Posted January 12, 2019 at 11:55 AM Author Share Posted January 12, 2019 at 11:55 AM I guess the T3x opened up the action for cleaner ejection than that on the T3 CTR. I also figured out the Tikka action looks more cumbersome than the Bergara only because the bolt lift is higher. I started out being settled on the Tikka, but then I learned about Tikka magazines being rare and expensive. That's what got me looking for something that took either common or cheap magazines, preferably both. I know, I could always change the bottom metal on the Tikka, but that's more money. I just changed the bottom metal on a different rifle and had to monkey with it to get magazines to seat. Not wanting to do that again. Mr. Rich, thanks for the offer. Depending on how long I can put off the new toy bug... maybe when it warms up a bit I'll pm you.
Birdhunter1 Posted January 12, 2019 at 01:39 PM Share Posted January 12, 2019 at 01:39 PM I have a T3 in 243, very accurate, very good trigger, and the smoothest bolt slide I've ever operated. I have not had any issue with my Tikka that I didn't create myself 11 years running so far.

Options are good. I hadn't considered Savage based only upon my running the bolt on a different gun in the past and being underwhelmed with the smoothness, but in it's defense it was $300 cheaper and it had a GREAT feeling trigger. Maybe I should at least check this out because it looks good on paper.
Mr_Rich Posted January 13, 2019 at 01:50 AM Share Posted January 13, 2019 at 01:50 AM I know it's a tough decision to make. Before I bought my Tikka I went to the NRA convention in Louisville and handled a bunch of rifles. The Christensen Arms rifles were very nice but you pay dearly for them. Kingcreek Posted January 13, 2019 at 01:42 PM Share Posted January 13, 2019 at 01:42 PM I have a tikka in .308. Very accurate and a wonderful trigger. No issues. Mags are not hard to find but are about $60 new. I worked up custom loads in 125gr for varmint and 165 and 180 so I got everything covered coyotes to elk. No issues and the action is extrely smooth. No problems with ejection either, this thing flings brass with authority. I don't think the stock bolt is unwieldy at all but I think the most common upgrade is a new bolt handle.
TRJ Posted January 18, 2019 at 06:34 PM Author Share Posted January 18, 2019 at 06:34 PM Anybody got a solid lead on cheap T3x CTR magazines for .308? Holy smokes, $90+ for a single 10 round magazine, over $110 for a 5 round magazine. The Tikka magazines are neat because they're double stacked and don't stick way out, but holy smokes the investment is insane. So one could switch out the bottom metal and run AI mags (pmags FTW) but then if you want to run a 10 round magazine you're stuck with a huge box that sticks way out of the bottom... RS1 Posted January 18, 2019 at 08:03 PM Share Posted January 18, 2019 at 08:03 PM I've never had an issue with just the one mag. I have a spare I picked up used but haven't needed it yet. I don't hunt but for LRPR it's fine. It's relatively quick and painless to reload. Yeah, if you want to carry 5 or 6 spares it's costly. Best advice there is to find used. If someone is selling a used rifle with multiple mags, offer $50-60 for a mag. Euro Optic usually has good Tikka part pricesif you're looking for new. .308 is $85 it looks like. Those are the polymer T3x mags...for hunting guns. The CTR model has a metal magazine. The 5 round metal magazine is actually the 10 round magazine body with a block in it. They just make the 5 round magazine to appease communist states and hunting regulations that restrict how many rounds you can have.
papa Posted January 18, 2019 at 08:48 PM Share Posted January 18, 2019 at 08:48 PM Sorry . I didn't really research the mags. Saw them and thought I would let you know. No harm , no foul.

My bench is full of springs, sights, levers and screws. While I might not need 6 magazines for a bolt gun, I'm certainly likely to have 3 or 4, but at $$$ each it makes me sad...particularly when I'm trying to put as much glass on a rifle as I can afford the extra $300 towards spare magazines hurts. DoYouFeelLucky Posted January 19, 2019 at 02:27 AM Share Posted January 19, 2019 at 02:27 AM I have a couple of Tikka rifles and love them. In the same price range check out the JP Sauer 100 rifles.

I have at least 6 spare mags for each of my autoloaders (including the FNs with $50 mags). I even have spare barrels for several pistols. I put on about $800 worth of glass on the CTR so I feel the pain there too. I intended to get several spare mags but after running it out a few times out a few times I settled on the one extra in the bag for piece of kind but I've never even loaded it. But to each their own. Just be careful not to pass up a great rifle solely over the price of the mags.
