If trading in a handgun as part of the purchase of another handgun from a licensed gun dealer, do I need to get a Transfer Approval Number, or for that matter, do anything that involves the State?

Nope, He will run your background for the purchase. He will give you a bill of sale for the firearm she/he bought.

The dealer should give you something that shows what you traded in.

To disarm is to consent to slavery.

No. In the past I have not sold many guns. But I decided to trade in my S&W 617 that I almost never touch and get another Glock.

The dealer will give you a document showing the model and serial # of the gun you are trading in.
