Justice Dept. Unveils Gun Plan, Sidestepping a Preoccupied Washington

By Katie Benner

Nov. 13, 2019

WASHINGTON Attorney General William P. Barr unveiled a new Justice Department initiative on Wednesday to tackle gun violence as Congress and the White House remain largely immobilized on the issue.

The initiative, Project Guardian, is focused primarily on strengthening partnerships among the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, federal prosecutors and state and local law enforcement to enforce and expand the use of existing gun laws. It will also create partnerships with community organizations aimed at preventing gun violence, and increase scrutiny of people convicted of violent felonies or domestic violence, potentially reducing their access to firearms.

At a news conference, Mr. Barr described Project Guardian as intended to help federal and local law enforcement better target offenders who use guns in crimes and those who try to buy guns illegally.

The result should cut the pipeline of crime guns from those violent individuals who seek to terrorize our communities, Regina Lombardo, the acting deputy director of the bureau, said in her public remarks.

...

Mr. Barr said local law enforcement would work more closely with the United States attorneys offices under the new initiative to consider federal prosecution in cases involving people who were arrested while in possession of a firearm, or who used guns to commit a federal crime, like drug trafficking or violent crime.

The initiative will bring more scrutiny to individuals convicted of violent felonies or misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence, and potentially restrict their access to guns. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will provide state and local law enforcement with regular lists of people who have failed their background checks.

And each federal prosecutors offices will share more information with local law enforcement, and work with mental health organizations to assess whether treatment could improve public safety.

Targeting offenders who commit crimes. I like that idea. Target criminals instead of inanimate objects. What a concept.

This is exactly why the antis won’t like it. Too many criminals of a certain group of people will get caught up.

Imho, let the chips fall where they fall. When the liberals come screaming back because their voter base is having a hard time casting ballots behind bars, the hypocrisy of their next steps will be deafening.

They have that solved. Crook County is going to open a polling place in the jail.

Chicago’s newest polling location? The Cook County Jail.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a law this week making the Cook County Jail Chicago's newest polling place, easing ballot access for roughly 6,000 pretrial detainees locally.

Crook county with it's revolving door jail, is NOT the Federal Jail. Fed's got TEETH.

Federal crime will probably get them WAYYYY out of state as they serve 85% of their time

- just a FEW of THOSE sentences will run a shiver through certain people in certain areas.

And a noticeable drop in certain crimes may even be noticed!!

I have a feeling in the back of my head that Chicago/Illinois and some other Democratic bastions will soon not (if ever) cooperate, they will toss up the ever famous "disproportionate prosecution" claims and for all intents we will be at the same point we are with immigration 'sanctuary' cities where these bastions will keep the slap on the wrist revolving door status quo the same.

"If you choose to lie on the federal forms when purchasing a firearm, you must face the consequences," said [united States Attorney Josh J.] Minkler. "Firearms purchased illegally, or for other people, are often purchased for no other reason, but to commit crimes. The Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to reducing gun violence and enforcing federal firearm laws through Project Guardian."

In July of 2019, investigators from the Indianapolis Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) initiated an investigation into the suspected firearms trafficking activities of Iva Patrick. Investigators were able to confirm that Patrick purchased at least 36 firearms from federal firearms licensees (FFLs) in the Indianapolis area on at least eight separate occasions between June 15, 2019 and August 9, 2019.

... nine firearms purchased by Patrick were recovered in Chicago, Illinois. Of those nine recovered firearms, it was determined by the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) that one of the guns purchased by Patrick was used in an unrelated homicide in Chicago where at least four persons were shot and one person died from a gunshot wound. Several firearms purchased by Patrick were recovered in connection with a carjacking, narcotics dealings, other shootings, and in the hands of convicted felons. Investigators are actively working to recover all firearms purchased by Patrick.

...

This case is a prime example of the Project Guardian initiative at work in the Southern District of Indiana. Law enforcement utilized crime gun intelligence to investigate this case and utilized various investigative resources including the ATF National Tracing Center to run a trace on all recovered guns.

From another article

"Patrick faces two counts of providing a false statement while purchasing a firearm, according to a federal indictment. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted, the release says."

Sorry but the few years she will get for that is hardly a deterant!
