Rep. Ford Calls For A Gun Database To Slow Illegal Gun Flow From Indiana

Help me understand how Mr. Ford thinks this database would work.

Would we rely on those intending to engage in illegal trafficking to report that intent before hitting the I94 on ramp? Or would we continue to conflate legal gun ownership with Chicago's unchecked violence, perhaps putting the burden on FOID card holders to demonstrate the benign intent of their travels?

Rep. LaShawn Ford Calls For A Gun Database To Slow Illegal Gun Flow From Indiana Border

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- To slow the flow of guns into Illinois from neighboring states, one lawmaker is recommending the adoption of a database strategy already being used to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Illinois, Indiana and four other Midwestern states have formed a compact to coordinate their responses to COVID-19.

State Representative La Shawn Ford from Chicago's West Side traveled to the Illinois-Indiana border Saturday in Calumet City to call for a similar partnership to combat the trafficking of guns across state lines.

He said that should include a database that lets those states know when one of their residents travels to one of the other states to buy guns.

"If Illinois had a database where we knew how many guns a person went to Indiana to purchase, then we could stop the gun-running that is taking place in Illinois right now," Ford said.

Ford said such a database would make it easier to track down who is trafficking guns to Illinois that are used in crimes. He said it could also deter some people from going out of state to buy guns and bring them back to Illinois.

How? Perhaps those residents of Cook County selling firearms out of the trunks of their cars will volunteer the information needed to make the database work. Including real time updates.

Or not.

Thats a head scratcher. Illegal guns are illegal. Being a private individual from a different state or an FFL about to do an illegal transfer, why would they report that and otherwise how is anyone to know until after the deed and some tracing should the weapon be confiscated for some reason.

Another case of ILGA members not understanding firearms, nor the laws under which they work?

Perhaps he means that Illinois should create a database of all guns in other states and track them so we'll know when they come into Illinois.

...or maybe just a database of all guns and their owners...

When the ILGA returns in the fall, assuming they will, I wonder if they will continue to ignore guns as they have so far or will they go full on to pass gun bills?

It seems with the recent amount of shootings being reported in media, Im seeing and hearing more about gun legislation although mainly at a national level or in other states so far.

Interesting...in his WGN video, he admits the 2nd Amendment is under attack. Is he the one that announced support for CCL earlier in the year?

We have already heard of mr flip-flop, go whichever way the wind blows "I support your 2Arights but want your stuff outlawed" LaSahawn Ford.

He's done so many 180's that his smartphone GPS only plots circles and has a terminal case of dizziness.

He wants the database to contain names of gun owners, their addresses and what guns they have, so the moment one gun is stolen and used in a crime, he can confiscate ALL firearms in IL.

Bet on it.

It's a back door attempt at an Illinois registry. Or he is a complete idiot.

For his idiotic idea to work, it would mean that LEGAL buyers are travelling to Indiana, Wisconsin whatever to legally purchase firearms and then sell them illegally in Illinois. Begs to question, why should they travel to Indiana to purchase legally, if they can do so in Illinois. Answer, is they wouldn't. ANd that ONLY works for long guns, and they still have to wait 3 days now. And why would they go to Indiana, for handgun purchases since they have to be shipped back to an Illinois FFL. THey wouldn't of course.

OR he idiotically believes people who can not legally buy in Illinois, can suddenly circumvent Federal laws and background checks and buy in Indiana, Wisconsin etc. Which they can't.

Or he stupidly thinks that those FFL and private sellers (who still, by law must send ALL purchases from Il residents to an Il FFL) who will illegally sell guns, bypassing thes laws will suddenly comply to this idiotic thing.

Here's the answer.

...
State Rep. Ford is calling for a midwest compact among governors. Anytime a gun is sold to an Illinois resident out of state, Illinois would get an alert.
...

Representative Ford is proposing that Illinois be notified every time one of its law abiding citizens legally purchases a firearm through an FFL in Indiana, with full back ground check and a completely traceable paper trail.

Never mind that the FLL has had to impose Illinois law on that legal out-of-state purchaser.

Never mind that the law abiding purchaser is very unlikely to ever use that firearm violently, and even less likely to initiate that violence.

Never mind that those committing the violence will continue to ignore Mr. Ford and his proposals.

Or is he suggesting that the guy selling stolen guns out back of that shady bar in Gary give him a call?

In other words, Representative Ford hasn't got a clue.

Having a clue is not required to get elected to public office.
We have great examples of that from local county officials all the way up to the current oval office.

Regardless, the grabbers will try to chip at any perceived weak point to reduce the right to carry as they know repealing the 2A is next to impossible.

... but no one can buy a handgun out-of-state unless it's shipped to an in-state FFL. Is Ford worried about rifle-violence? Is Ford worried about Internet-violence?

"Illegal" guns coming into Illinois from Indiana are smuggled. They're bought by Indiana residents, not Illinois residents.

I return to my post above. Ford apparently wants an Illinois database of all out-of-state guns. Other states with registries only track in-state guns. Ford's idea literally turns that inside-out.

Exactly, Ford knows exactly what he's doing. He expects little pushback as most IL gun owners don't go out to state to buy guns. If he gets this established then it becomes "common sense" that a similar registry should exist for guns sold within in the state, and then he has his firearm registry and once you have that its common sense to ban private transfers, so no one is able to cheat the system and not have their gun show up in the registry

Don't they pretty much have that already with the FOID card? Maybe not the "guns" but they sure do know the owners.

The plot thickens...

Let’s stop gun running from Indiana

By Rep. La Shawn Ford

...

U.S. Rep. Robin L. Kelly has introduced H.R.4116, the Prevent Gun Trafficking Act, which would amend federal law to combat straw purchases of firearms and deter firearms trafficking.

I strongly support this legislation as a start in the process to end the flow of illegal guns from neighboring states, especially Indiana, into the West and South sides of Chicago.

In addition, Illinois and its bordering states must work together and establish a database to track those people turning the legal purchases of firearms to weapons of mass destruction.

The six Midwestern states should work together to end gun running and trafficking to protect the people in their state. Chicago neighborhoods have too many illegal guns on their streets, and we continue to see the deadly consequences of not stopping the illegal act of gun running and trafficking from border states.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker could lead the formation of a compact of the six Midwestern states to protect the health and safety of Illinoisans, and we will need to work with our congressional delegation to achieve the consent of Congress for this compact.

Gun violence is something that impacts all of us directly or indirectly, and it will take all of us working together to save lives in Chicago. Let’s stop gun running from Indiana and other states NOW.

Rep. La Shawn Ford represents Austin in the Illinois House.

Interesting, Ford's use of the sentence: "turning the legal purchases of firearms to weapons of mass destruction."

Also, the sponsor of the Federal Bill, Robin Kelly (D-2) is a Bloomberg purchase, and is up for re-election in November.

So, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Statistics report titled "Source and Use of Firearms Involved in Crimes: Survey of Prison Inmates, 2016" which was published in January 2019 . . .

Use and source of firearms among all state and federal prisoners About 1% of all state and federal prisoners used a firearm during the offense that they obtained from a retail source . . . About 2% of prisoners possessed a firearm that they obtained from a retail source, including a retail store, pawn shop, flea market, or gun show.

About 1.3% of prisoners obtained a gun from a retail source and used it during their offense.

Among prisoners who possessed a firearm during their offense, 0.8% obtained it at a gun show.

Two percent or fewer possessed a rifle or a shotgun.

Which means that about 98 percent of firearms are obtained not from firearm dealers or gun shows, but rather through criminal means, found, passed on by other criminals, or by family members acquiring firearms for the criminal gun users.

Literally, this legislation is targeted at the LEAST and SMALLEST means that criminals obtain firearms to commit crimes with.

An estimated 287,400 prisoners had possessed a firearm during their offense [in 2016], so out of that, 2 percent equals about 5,750 criminals in the ENTIRE COUNTRY used firearms that would be affected by that idiotic proposed legislator. Given that the population in the 6 states he wants the database set up in (Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana) is about 38,987,000 out of a total U.S. population of 321,419,000, proportionally, at most 13 percent of those 5,750 criminals would even potentially be targeted by that law.

That's about 750 criminals per year, according to the 2016 numbers.

Therefore, in order to attempt to prevent the least impactful source of firearms from being used by criminals, used by only about 750 criminals per year in the entire 6-state area, he wants to violate the 4th Amendment rights of nearly 40 million people.

Incidentally, given that the population of Illinois is 12,672,000, proportionate to the population of the U.S. and that 6-state area, not even 250 criminals in Illinois would be affected, if you go by straight numbers. Even given that certain parts of Chicago have a much higher incidence of criminal actors than the entire rest of the 6-state area, you're still talking probably less than 500 criminals IN THE ENTIRE STATE that this is targeting.

That sort of abuse of power and willful stupidity should be a capital crime.
