The take over of Cabela's has been a disaster. The quality of the Cabela's branded merchandise has dropped considerably. A lot of their stuff used to be made in Vietnam, but the replacement Red Head garbage is made in back alley's in China. Not even close in quality. Expect more of the same.

I used to buy quite a bit of Cabela's branded clothing, boots & home goods. Not anymore. I bought their Snowrunner hiking/winter boots every year. They have stopped making them. I have one more brand new pair in it's box and then it's time to look for something else.

I remember when Eddie Bauer was the go to place for high quality extreme weather gear... then fashion happened.

REI suffered a similar fate. Eastern Mountain Sports made a go of it for a while here in the midwest... even Banana Republic was a place for certain outdoors and work clothing. All killed, by fashion.

My winter gear selections from Cabela's last year are of high quality. Better than the most similar BassPro stuff which all seems to be emblazoned with hideous logos and branding. I could really go for a line of the best products available anywhere with no logos or identifying info. All I want is the best functional stuff and I don't need to show it off to every passerby.

Where will we go next?

EB, Bass Pro, Cabelas, EMS which didnt survive in the midwest, REI do seem like a disappointment these days. Ill stop by REI sometimes but LL Bean Ive been looking to for gloves, coats and winter boots but seem to often be OOS. Been meaning to make a stop by Duluth Trading to see what they have. Not thrilled by ordering wearables online from these (or even Amazon) as sizing is always a crap shoot so at least these have retail stores to try on when not OOS.

Mergers are great for profit margins, not so much for consumer options as it always turns to consolidation of product lines, limitations on distributors and consolidation and limitations on brand offerings.

As pointed out with the boats, these mergers almost always lead to eclusive brand offerings across the entire merged chain of stores. And worse the 'big' brands buy shelf space with these conglomerates and in the contracts almost always place limits on (or forbid) competing brands be sold by the conglomerate stores.

Used to make the trip from the Rockford area to Cabela's in Hoffman Estates, but now there is no reason as I agree about diminishing quality.

It's a shame a town the size of Rockford can't keep a real sportsman store. I will NOT set foot in Dicks and all they have anyway is overpriced Under Armor crap.

I was told by one of the managers Gander was 3 months ahead in project profitability (plan was 1 year to in black for new store/market). Closed because no RV sales or service. Not because store couldn't produce profits. No other Gander had been 3 months ahead of plan. When store closed I bought a masterbuilt xl pellet smoker for less than $200 (store closing price). Other store had them at $450. It was less than 3 month from lines launch of XL pellet launch.
