Here's a good sign!

I went into the Cabela's in Indiana to get a holster for my (at the time) one carry gun.

I asked the clerk if I may unholster my weapon, unload it, and try out various holsters. He said "Of course, thank you for asking." I did exactly that, found the holster I was looking for (I only had an OWB) and reloaded and reholstered my weapon. No worries.

Just letting someone know what your intentions are goes a long way.

I find their rules restrictive to CCL holders. I carry every time I go into Article 2 range. So the times I want to shoot one of the handguns I carry, I "unholster a loaded a loaded weapon in their store." I reload those handguns at the range and re-holster them before I leave. So they expect CCL holders to enter their store unarmed (people are unarmed if they are only carrying empty handguns) and to leave their store unarmed? I think they are the "idiots."

The sign says nothing about entering the store with an empty gun. I doubt that you would pull out your pistol in the store area at Article 2. I assume that, like many of us, you wait until you are at a shooting station to unholster and you automatically point the muzzle downrange. There is no downrange in most stores.

I disagree. They expect you to carry a different gun that day if your plan is to try out a new holster, shoot at the range, etc on your primary carry firearm. I shoot my primary carry firearm sometimes at Article 2. On those days, I carry a different loaded firearm on me, and bring my "normal carry" firearm unloaded and in a case. Not a big deal at all...

I liked the sign. It's much better to shame people who make poor decisions than to ban carry entirely (which is what happens if too many people make poor decisions.)

Quiet Observer, your assumption is correct. I don't unholster my loaded firearm at Article 2 until I'm at the shooting station of the range.

If I unholstered my loaded firearm before that, I'd be violating Illinois CCL law.

Makes me wonder the purpose of that sign if it refers to any area besides a range. Seems redundant. Might unnecessarily spook some customers from a business standpoint. But that's their business. I stand corrected. Thanks

If that's what they expect, they need to do a better job of communicating it (and if they do communicate that, they will lose this customer.)

The first time I went to Article 2 after receiving my CCL, I called to ask what their CCL policy was. I was told if the employees don't see my carry, no issues. Simple. Consistent with CCL law.

Seems very simple to me. Not sure why range rules were mentioned as that area is treated differently.

Article 2 also seemed confused on what they wanted to do with CCL. First they had a sign that concealed carry is prohibited but then it was quickly changed to CCL being welcome as long as you continue to comply with CCL laws.

I misunderstood the sign. I thought they were range rules, Never saw any unholstering rules in other businesses I go into throughout the day.

I never saw a sign in Article2 saying anything like concealed carry was prohibited. It was April, 2014, when I asked and was told their CCL policy above. I did see laziness on their part to revise their printed pre-CCL "rules" signs (not sure if they've done that yet.). Was it some of those pre-CCL rules you saw or did you see a sign saying concealed carry was prohibited?

I've see plenty of people ask to try a holster/case for their carry gun, and ask if they can pull their gun out of their pocket or holster. The sign above is obviously in some type of gun shop, and the employees are tired of knuckleheads insisting they be allowed to unholster to see if something fits "just right".

If you need to bring a gun to try out accessories for it. Bring it in unloaded and in a case , and carry something else that day. Common sense.

I understand that the signs are somewhat silly. It's like that 'coffee may be hot' warning that was created just for idiots and ones who don't know that they're idiots. Worst of it all one has to assume that people writing the signs are not idiots and people enforcing the rules are not idiots.

As far as I remember they had their no concealed carry sign which wasn't ISP approved. Then they revised it to be CCL friendly shortly after CCL was out in the wild.

I'm not saying that's what they expect. I'm saying that's what I do. :) Their rule is "no drawing from the holster". I suspect what you do is probably ok, but I've never checked

And they had a "no loaded firearms" sign on their door long ago from before the CCW days. I asked them about it with concern (as I'm sure many others did too) and they took it down. They do not prohibit CCW in any way. But it is still very, very bad form (and potentially dangerous if the employees don't understand your intentions) at any gunstore to unholster a loaded firearm. If bringing in a firearm to check a holster, to have it repaired, ect..., then "in a case and unloaded" is the only way to go.

My favorite sign though is the first one on this page: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/558305685026013632/

I'm sorry, Xwing. The "Firearms Welcome" part is great. But why do people think concealed carry people need signs to tell them "please keep all weapons holstered..." even with their little joke? We're not stupid people and nobody obeys laws better than Illinois concealed carry people. Maybe people who make those signs have a bit of "nannie" in them. Don't we already know signs don't work?

Every once in awhile I've corrected people in ranges. But always in good humor...they tend to be new and unconfident...no different than my family as they learn.. Quickest way to discourage a new gun owner is to make them feel bad.
