Molly B. Posted June 13, 2015 at 02:11 PM Share Posted June 13, 2015 at 02:11 PM Monday, June 15, 20157 p.m.Village Hall, 123 Madison St.Oak Park, IL Please attend this important meeting if at all possible. Oak Park Village Board is at it again, this time voting on a resolution in support of a federal background check on all firearm transfers. They don't seem to understand this will only affect law abiding citizens doing legal firearm transfers. It will not curb illegal sales, it will not keep firearms out of the hands of the wrong people, it will not reduce violent crimes committed by violent criminals. Unless they can find a way to perform background checks on illegal sales of firearms this measure will do nothing to curb violent crimes committed with a firearm. Let's suggest to the Oak Park Village Board that focusing on GANG violence, its root causes, and prosecuting to the fullest those who commit violent acts would be a far better way to reduce violence in our communities. Please call and email village board members, remember to be polite and professional!! MrTriple Posted June 15, 2015 at 02:42 AM Share Posted June 15, 2015 at 02:42 AM Really, this just goes back to the fact that they can't enact any gun control measures. They're angry, and this is the most they can do.
BrowningHP Posted June 15, 2015 at 03:28 AM Share Posted June 15, 2015 at 03:28 AM Serious question - what does passing a resolution achieve?
Molly B. Posted June 15, 2015 at 03:32 AM Author Share Posted June 15, 2015 at 03:32 AM It doesn't have any teeth but it's important that we don't just let them slide. It's important to show opposition so that they know residents are watching what the board is doing plus letting the board know that there are residents who oppose this kind of thing. TRJ Posted June 15, 2015 at 04:13 PM Share Posted June 15, 2015 at 04:13 PM If I can add to Molly's above comment...while it has no teeth it does have political purpose, it will be used as a talking point just like the referendum questions about UBC on the ballot in the last election. Once they pass this resolution it will become a club to beat up legislators with something like..."Cook County is overwhelmingly in favor or UBC and AWB, and Oak Park strongly agrees having passed a Resolution to support UBC after 80+% of their voters showed support for UBC on the most recent municipal election. We want stronger laws that mirror the values of our community, but unless these laws are made at the national level violent guns will travel over borders into our areas " or whatever othet hogwash stats they can devise. On a personal note, someone close to me was attacked by multiple thugs in Oak Park years ago. If we can cause the board some severe indigestion over their stance on self preservation issues it would make an emotionally scarred victim smile. OldMarineVet Posted June 15, 2015 at 04:49 PM Share Posted June 15, 2015 at 04:49 PM Repeating pieces of post from other thread to ensure everybody understands UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS (UBC) are very dangerous. UBC's represent a "convincing story" that covers up a hideous gun registration DATABASE. As most know, a gun registration database could be used for massive gun confiscation in the wrong hands. UBC also makes just physically handing your firearm to another person a TRANSFER invoking FFL/Federal transfer rules (same thing on the "hand back.") Each of those transactions go into the UBC database. Thanks to Bloomberg and other elites, Washington state passed the convincing UBC's by referendum. Some gun owner's even voted for it! That's what prompted the NRA send emails to tell all members to 1) stop voting for it, 2) make sure everybody understands it creates a gun registration database. Bloomberg's strategy is now to push gun control locally since they've failed nationally and he won in Washington state. Washington state is really wrestling with this. It looks like any ground lost to UBC's is extremely difficult to win back. They are busy in Washington holding demonstrations passing (transferring) passing guns back and forth to each other... but it's going to take more than that. Mr. Fife Posted June 15, 2015 at 08:52 PM Share Posted June 15, 2015 at 08:52 PM Maybe if enough of us show up and volunteer to talk, they will quickly vote it down so that they can watch the Hawks win the Stanley Cup tonight.

Mr. Fife Posted June 16, 2015 at 01:57 AM Share Posted June 16, 2015 at 01:57 AM Well its over and the resolution passed unanimously. I was able to talk to a guy there who was filming the awards and stuck around to see what the next agenda was about. He really liked our first speaker so he filmed the whole thing. I talked to him in the parking lot and he agreed to forward the film to me. I'm not sure how to post it when I get it, but I'm sure someone here could help. jlowrie Posted June 16, 2015 at 02:20 AM Share Posted June 16, 2015 at 02:20 AM unsurprisingly, the resolution passed unanimously. 2 speakers were against. 1 for. The first gentleman who spoke against was quite passionate, but essentially relied on the assault on 2nd amendment rights argument. I spoke second. Talked about the negative effects it will have on FFL dealers. increasing their costs, liability, etc. I also mentioned the issue of oak park continuing to have a ban on handgun sales, if no nearby FFLs are willing to do transfer where does that leave the gun owner? Also spoke to some recommendations for a different approach to background checks. Federal government should be tying Byrne and National Criminal History Improvement project grants to the states to their reporting of mental health and criminal history to the NICS database. By establishing goals for accuracy and also for completeness, states are incentivized to get reporting correct. This way the federal and state databases more accurately reflect what is supposed to do. (as much as i despise the whole idea of background checks personally)
spanishjames Posted June 16, 2015 at 02:47 AM Share Posted June 16, 2015 at 02:47 AM One of the council members said the only thing she didn't agree with was the mental health reporting requirements. She said seeing a mental health professional shouldn't automatically disqualify someone from owning a firearm. She said there are different reasons for seeking mental help, and those who do, won't necessarily turn to violence . Nevertheless, "I will still vote yes." OldMarineVet Posted June 16, 2015 at 12:07 PM Share Posted June 16, 2015 at 12:07 PM Yikes. I apologize. Until I just read these posts, I thought we were talking about Oak Park meeting, Thursday, June 18 at 7 p.m. in the Oak Park Public Library Veterans Room. All I needed to do was read the emails closer. Sorry I let this effort down.

Mr. Fife Posted June 16, 2015 at 06:57 PM Share Posted June 16, 2015 at 06:57 PM The audio is not bad if you use earphones. There really wasn't any talk about backdoor registration at all, if I recall correctly. Maybe I can run the audio through Audacity program tonight to make it louder, not making any promises though. GarandCollector Posted June 16, 2015 at 11:35 PM Share Posted June 16, 2015 at 11:35 PM http://www.oakpark.com/News/Articles/6-16-2015/Oak-Park-board-backs-gun_control-resolution/ Oak Park board backs gun-control resolutionVillage sends message on criminal background checksTuesday, June 16th, 2015 1:55 PM By Timothy InklebargerStaff Reporter Oak Park village trustees on Monday night unanimously approved a resolution supporting federal legislation that would require criminal background checks for gun purchases. The resolution, which will be sent to state and federal lawmakers, would also increase the reporting of mental health and other relevant records to a national database in an effort to keep guns out of the hands of potential criminals. Former village attorney Ray Heise told trustees that his group, Gun Responsibility Advocates, was successful in placing an advisory referendum question on the November 2014 ballot to gauge Oak Parkers' support for the federal legislation. More than 92 percent of voters supported the federal law. "With rights come responsibilities," Heise told trustees, adding that lobbying efforts by the National Rifle Association and corporate interests have "trumped the voice of the people." While several other residents spoke in favor of the resolution, a couple of Oak Parkers voiced opposition. Resident Robert Williams said the resolution would "give up liberties and freedoms for a false sense of security." "Freedom is not free," he said. "A lot of blood and treasure was spent to give us the freedom to sit here."
