Petition for President Trump To Pardon Gillian Jeffords And Support Teachers' Right To Bear Arms

This petition at whitehouse.gov needs 150 signatures for it to be visible to the general public and on the administration's radar. Once Trump becomes aware of it, I think he'll recognize its value and not even wait for all the signatures needed to trigger an official response. Please sign it and get all your friends on board. If the count is less than 150 when you read it, this may be the only time your opinion really matters.

The most immediate and effective way to stop school shootings is to recognize that teachers are the last line of defense when government fails at all levels as happened in Parkland, Florida.

Criminal justice proceedings in the United States and other processes of the federal government are not subject to White House website petitions. We the People, rather, served as a public relations device for the Obama administration to provide a venue for citizens to express themselves. On August 23, 2012, the White House Director of Digital Strategy Macon Phillips released the source code for the platform.[2] The source code is available on GitHub, and lists both public domain status as a work of the U.S. federal government and licensing under the GPL v2.[3] On December 19, 2017 The Trump administration announced its intention to shut down the website and replace it with a "new platform would save taxpayers more than $1m a year." [4] As of May 2018, the site is operating as it was before it shut down.

The person who started the petition didn't even supply a name only R.J. Do what you want. I think it's a way of gathering names and email addresses. Color me skeptical. Something started by Obama and Trump wanting to shut it down.

Let's focus on the big picture here. The pardon and the Medal of Freedom petition, when they achieve 150 signatures and are visible to the general public on the whitehouse.gov website, will convey the following messages to a national audience:

1) Gun control laws are historically racist.
2) Forcing teachers and students to be sitting ducks for lunatics and terrorists is an outrageous abuse of power by the government.
3) It's time for Congress to reconsider the Gun Free School Zones Act in light of the Otis McDonald decision.
A cost/benefit analysis of this legislation is long overdue. Here's mine:
The cost has been almost 3 decades of mass murders, catastrophic injuries, medical bills, lost productivity, psychological trauma and time and money wasted trying to counteract its unintended consequences. The only benefit has been the empty virtue signaling enjoyed by its delusional supporters. In addition to the obvious costs, add the criminalization of the very people who could position themselves to save lives.
Gun free zones without impenetrable armed security to enforce them are a fantasy. If the only person in the area with a gun is the one who broke the law to bring it there, why is anyone surprised at the result? The Gun Free School Zones Act facilitates terrorists and lunatics while persecuting those who are forced to live under it. Isn't that the exact opposite of what it should do? Enough is enough. Repeal it. At the very least, redefine the term "gun free zone" to prohibit openly carrying a firearm while allowing concealed carry permit holders to be the last line of defense when government fails at all levels as happened in Parkland, Florida.

That was a bridge too far. Baby steps. The Otis McDonald and Gillian Jeffords petitions hit the sweet spot between liberal virtue signaling and Second Amendment activism. All it takes is 150 signatures to get national attention and find out if there's any traction. If a simple signature can move the ball 1% toward that goal, why would anyone not do it?

The clock is ticking and every second we're getting closer to the next mass murder. It boggles my mind that people can't see that pushing this to 150 signatures will bring national attention and make Trump and his team aware of it. At that point, they'll realize that a simple action can send an effective message to teachers AND prosecutors AND potential shooters while Congress dithers about what to do next.
