...Nearly a year into his appointment to the 27th District Illinois Senate seat, Republican incumbent Tom Rooney is defending his votes on gun control bills in the face of a series of critical mailers from Democratic opponent Ann Gillespie and criticism from those in his own party.

Rooney, who stepped down as Rolling Meadows mayor in November 2017 to fill the vacancy of Matt Murphy, voted no to banning bump stocks -- devices that attach to guns to allow rapid fire -- but was the lone Senate Republican to support state licensing of gun dealers.

It was the latter bill that got Rooney the endorsement of the Arlington Heights-based Gun Violence Prevention PAC, which lobbied for the bill's passage in the legislature before it was vetoed by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

"Is it actually a Second Amendment issue that really deals with the Second Amendment, or is it not?" Rooney said in a recent interview with the Daily Herald Editorial Board. "And if it's actually a Second Amendment issue, then the threshold is really high. To me, I had to sit with a lot of gun people and say this is not a Second Amendment issue. This is a business regulation."

While Rooney says he was originally opposed to the state licensing gun dealers, he became convinced after hearing from a number of constituents on the issue....

...Both Rooney and Gillespie have been endorsed by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America....

When will republican's learn that you can't out-democrat a democrat ?

No matter how much Illinois rinos appease the progressive liberals on gun control, abortion and other issues, those constituents always abandon them for someone who is even more left-leaning on those issues, and the rinos lose because they've alienated the conservative voters.

Rooney is my state senator. He told me in an email that he will vote in favor of gun control laws that "don't clearly violate the second amendment" (whatever that means) because he "knows the numbers" in the district and that the majority of voters in the district are in favor of gun control. He said this despite his admission that he knows the laws won't make our community safer.

I think the only recourse going forward in Illinois is to challenge each and every law (such as an "assault weapons" ban in court and hopefully the SCOTUS will take the case this time and rule in favor of the second amendment. Honestly, it sure would be nice to have a SCOTUS ruling saying assault weapons bans are unconstitutional. Finally put the issue to bed once and for all.

+100 But the RINOs are still better than the Dems who are mostly full-on socialists at this point.

I very much doubt they'd grant certiorari on a tactical rifle ban. The machine gun ban hasn't been successfully challenged in 30 years. A ban of specific type of arms likely would not be either, unless you could argue that such a ban was a de-facto ban on all arms. As much as I hate bans on tactical rifles, the only place to stop them is in the State Legislature (and / or with a State Governor who will veto them.) We won't get relief on this one from SCOTUS.

Rooney worked HARD for all the flack he's catching.

And all it got him was an endorsement from "Gun Violence Prevention PAC"
and a USELESS endorsement from the demanding mom's because they endorsed his opponent too!!

He's really blazing a trail in the journey of throwing away votes and alienating constituents.

Let's make his life as miserable as possible.

I want to picket his "VICTORY CELEBRATION" headquarters
on the evening of November 6
IF and ONLY IF HE LOOSES:
with signs that say:
on one side "WE WILL REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER"
AND ON THE other side:
"IT'S NOVEMBER:GUNOWNERS REMEMBERED. BYE BYE"

Absolutely. We should fight all the way. But, there's not much we can do in this state. Madigan has a supermajority and JB will be our next governor. The SCOTUS is the last hope. I believe if the case makes its way there, we will eventually win...and the left ought to be very careful. Do they really want to test their law in the SCOTUS? Or, is it better to just leave it be? That's a strategic question they need to answer.

I think if it can be effectively argued that there's nothing especially deadly about an "assault weapons" when compared to other ordinary rifles and that, in fact, an AR-15 (for example) is nothing but an ordinary rifle, I can't see a conservative-leaning reasonable court disagreeing with that.
