streakpi Posted March 5, 2012 at 12:12 PM Share Posted March 5, 2012 at 12:12 PM I am thinking of starting a new hobby...stippling backstraps. Does anyone have AAR (after action review) comments on stippling these things? I'm not the most mechanically inclined...and don't want to spend hours doing one back strap. Thought I could make an initial investment on the equipment, some back straps, and get to work in my garage. Have any of you tried this yourselves? IM me with specifics if you want...I'm pretty excited...but that excitement can turn into frustration if I find out that this isn't a fun process
milq Posted March 6, 2012 at 01:20 AM Share Posted March 6, 2012 at 01:20 AM You're just a few days early for a report. I am going to try my hand at it on a piece of 4140 steel before I try it on a back strap. It's really the front strap I want done most of all but figured I'd try a back strap first if the scrap steel turns out well. I'll also post pics of my budget custom commander bob tail. I plan to bob it and do the trigger job on Thursday.
riversludge Posted March 6, 2012 at 01:26 AM Share Posted March 6, 2012 at 01:26 AM I have seen how they do it on a polymer gun, correctly or not I am not sure, with a soldering iron. How is it done on steel?
streakpi Posted March 6, 2012 at 01:31 AM Author Share Posted March 6, 2012 at 01:31 AM Heck, I simply want to do it on a S&W M&P detachable rubber back strap...not trying to bend steel or form kydex! Anyone experiment on this specific task at home?

You going to do designs? Some I have seen look pretty cool, some look pretty bad....but a bunch of things are like that i guess.

They have detachable RUBBER back straps which are much easier to "burn" than a plastic strap. Still thinking about it...reading some other forums where guys are doing the same thing. Sounds like it could take 1-2 hours each strap...and the guys usually make their own tips. I have zero - 0 - mechanical ability and no tools...this is REALLY a leap of faith for me if I do it. streakpi Posted March 6, 2012 at 01:49 AM Author Share Posted March 6, 2012 at 01:49 AM $3.50 for the back strap. Maybe $25 for a wood burner.

milq Posted March 6, 2012 at 02:01 AM Share Posted March 6, 2012 at 02:01 AM I have seen how they do it on a polymer gun, correctly or not I am not sure, with a soldering iron. How is it done on steel? It's done using a small hammer and a punch (and a lot of time). Its really just a texturing, similar to sand blasting but much deeper. The punch can be ground to provide different textures if wanted. Clark custom does a very unique treatment called a tiger tooth or tiger shark (cant recall which its called) stippling. They use a very small sharp punch held at nearly a right angle to the front strap to peel shards of steel up, they really bite the hand and sometimes even draw blood I've heard. That particular method is directional and they do it based on your strong hand.
streakpi Posted March 6, 2012 at 02:49 AM Author Share Posted March 6, 2012 at 02:49 AM The more I research...the more work it seem! Going to order a couple this week and buy a wood gun this weekend!
xmikex Posted March 6, 2012 at 02:58 AM Share Posted March 6, 2012 at 02:58 AM I stippled 2 Glocks with a soldering iron. Was very easy, quick and makes the grip a bit more positive. The key thing is to be patient, take your time and concentrate so you create a consistent, uniform pattern.
Xwing Posted March 6, 2012 at 02:39 PM Share Posted March 6, 2012 at 02:39 PM I don't have anything to add to this conversation. milq Posted March 6, 2012 at 08:23 PM Share Posted March 6, 2012 at 08:23 PM I figured 4140 would be a good place to start but I'm betting back strap and the pistol frame will be softer. I think I've got a used smooth 1911 main spring housing to test too.
streakpi Posted March 7, 2012 at 11:07 PM Author Share Posted March 7, 2012 at 11:07 PM Well I called S&W tonight to ask if they sell the backstraps (can't find them on their site). Told the parts department guy that I bought my gun used and did not have small or large back straps...he is sending them to me for FREE! Will use these as my initial guinea pigs. Also found CHEAP back straps on Speed Shooter Specialties and bought small and large tan back straps and a compact small black one. This way I can experiment with different sizes and colors. These - like most other sites - were the only ones in stock! HOWEVER, each of these straps cost HALF of what Midway and Browning are selling them for. Heading out to shop for an inexpensive wood burner tonight...by next weekend I should be up and running.
streakpi Posted March 13, 2012 at 02:22 AM Author Share Posted March 13, 2012 at 02:22 AM Finished my first back strap tonight. I've got 8 wood burning tips and used 5 of them...3 of them on this grip. Guess I like the circles the best because they are the easiest. Need to complete 6-8 more, different sizes means different shapes. This is my first one...don't hold back...what do you think??? http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l140/streakpi/Stippling/DSC04077.jpghttp://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l140/streakpi/Stippling/DSC04082.jpg
Ccspinner Posted March 13, 2012 at 02:52 AM Share Posted March 13, 2012 at 02:52 AM Big thing is how does it feel. make sure there are no sharp edges that will hurt when fireing.as long as it is smooth enough but improving grip than its a winner. vezpa Posted March 13, 2012 at 04:38 AM Share Posted March 13, 2012 at 04:38 AM Looks like you did a good job. I used to have a wood burning kit with a pen that was a lot of fun. Stippling isn't for me though, after my brother bought me my first Hogue grip for my Beretta PX, I've become an addict, putting them on all of my guns. Best $10 you can spend. Makes the gun's grip phenomenal. http://www.dillonprecision.com/uimages//Hogue_Handall_Grip_Sleeve_m.jpg
xmikex Posted March 13, 2012 at 05:51 PM Share Posted March 13, 2012 at 05:51 PM Careful with the slip-on grips. They can slide up and activate the mag release. You can use a little hairspray on the inside and on the grip to help keep it in place. Mike

streakpi Posted March 15, 2012 at 01:25 AM Author Share Posted March 15, 2012 at 01:25 AM Need to complete 6-8 more, different sizes means different shapes. This is my first one...don't hold back...what do you think??? I'm impressed. How does it look on the gun? Unfortunately, my one M&P 9 Pro is with S&W getting repairs! I have no model! I'm also waiting on my FOID card so I can buy a 9 compact. Sooo...I'm practicing my form without guns!!! Here is the 3rd one stippled. It is a compact (small) back strap in black. I used the round tip around the whole grip, then went back with a smaller tip and made a indentation inside the larger holes. Burned through once...learned that there are places in the plastic which are thinner than the rest of the grip. It started raining on me as I was finishing up...got a bit sloppy. Still figuring this heat/time ratio thing. http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l140/streakpi/Stippling/DSC04110.jpghttp://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l140/streakpi/Stippling/DSC04108.jpghttp://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l140/streakpi/Stippling/DSC04105.jpg
milq Posted March 15, 2012 at 03:20 AM Share Posted March 15, 2012 at 03:20 AM The smaller circles inside the larger ones give it a unique look, I'm curious what holding the tip at an angle and pressing deeper as it melted would do. (as Vaden said, maybe snake scale look by doing that?)

streakpi Posted March 19, 2012 at 01:12 AM Author Share Posted March 19, 2012 at 01:12 AM Name my work! Ok guys/gals, time to help me out and both provide some feedback and names for my new grips. I have 7 of them which I like...I will continue to improve these designs and perfect my patterns. Here is what I need - you to suggest names for these back straps. Eventually, I plan on selling them to the public. In the meantime, let's have some fun and come up with some cool/or fun names:#1, #2 - no names...they were my "mad experiments"#3http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l140/streakpi/Stippling/A23.jpg#4http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l140/streakpi/Stippling/A24JPG.jpg#5http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l140/streakpi/Stippling/A25.jpg THANKS!!! streakpi Posted March 22, 2012 at 01:36 AM Author Share Posted March 22, 2012 at 01:36 AM Ok, next step! Who has a M&P compact? .45, 9mm or .40 compacts? I want to give a couple of you a sample of my creations for free. All I want is a pic or two posted and an honest opinion. Interested in what works...this way I can start making less variations and stick with what works. Who wants one now? This is like Picasso giving away drawings when he was a young boy. I got my 9mm Pro back today so some gun modeling will be posted mañana.
