soylentgreen Posted July 18, 2018 at 03:53 PM Share Posted July 18, 2018 at 03:53 PM I thought we had a chance to pull the state out of the death spiral. I was wrong. The man has stabbed me in the back.Just what do you think a Governor alone can do about that? You appear to have no clue at all how the state government works and that Democrats have a supermajority. I assure you that I do know how the state government works. The governor can do more than sit at his desk waiting for bills to veto. You know, not all Democrats are anti-gun. But apparently there are some Republicans who are pro-tax increase. What would have been wrong with the governor taking the issues to the people or trying to rally Republicans? The fact is the tax increase could not have overrode his veto if no Republicans had voted for it. If Rauner isn't anti-gun why doesn't he go out and fight the narrative that gun control is going to solve all of our problems? Why is he always on the defense? Why is he afraid to veto anti-gun bills...even if there's the ability to override the veto? The governor of a state is in a far better position to set the agenda and the tone of our discourse than you or I am. I mean, what I think I hear you saying is that it DOESN'T MATTER if we have Rauner or Pritzker in the governor's mansion...because Rauner can't do spit anyway! Is that right? Is that the point you're intending to make? That's the message I'm hearing. I never expected miracles from Rauner. But, I mean, what has he delivered on? He's placated the left over and over and literally done nothing for his base. Nothing.

Do I wish he had vetoed the 72-waiting period? Do I wish he had issued an amendatory veto and at least exempted CCL holders - in a perfect world yes. But like someone already mentioned, what would come back at us would be worse than adding long guns to the 72-hr. wait. In this political climate, he made sure the 'assault language' was not in the bill. That was in his power to do. Drumming up support among Republicans? DID YOU SEE how the republicans jumped on all these anti bills?? I had a senator whom I have respected and trusted for years and look me in the eye and tell me their vote on these bills could effect their re-election and they had to vote for them - even HB772 which was a horrible, horrible LVOP bill that even the advocates for domestic abuse victims opposed. Good heavens - there was no drumming up support among the republicans, they were jumping on with both hands. It was disgusting. And after the initial conversations with them, they suddenly became unavailable and wouldn't make eye contact in the halls. If I blame anyone, that's who I blame and you can find out who they were by looking at the vote tallies.

His hands were tied and he lessened the damage significantly. Im more radical than a good portion of you here, but Im not an idiot. Turncoat Republican cowards that only care about getting another term are to blame, not the governor Link to comment

No matter how much info, dire warnings, begging, etc. you throw at them they absolutely refuse to join us or any group or make a call or file a slip and many won't vote at all. They will be the first ones b****ing about the end result. Link to comment
