Justice Department to end Obama-era 'Operation Choke Point'

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/08/17/trump-reverses-obama-operation-chokepoint-241767

..."The Justice Department has committed to ending a controversial Obama-era program that discourages banks from doing business with a range of companies, from payday lenders to gun retailers.

The move hands a big victory to Republican lawmakers who charged that the initiative dubbed "Operation Choke Point" was hurting legitimate businesses.

In a letter to House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd referred to the program as a misguided initiative."

We share your view that law abiding businesses should not be targeted simply for operating in an industry that a particular administration might disfavor, says the letter, obtained by progressive activist group Allied Progress and later provided to POLITICO by Goodlatte's office. Enforcement decisions should always be made based on facts and the applicable law.

We reiterate that the Department will not discourage the provision of financial services to lawful industries, including businesses engaged in short-term lending and firearms-related activities, it adds. A nearly identical letter was sent to Sens. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho).

The Justice Department confirmed the letter was authentic but declined to comment further."...

The article suggests this is about an "Obama-era program that discourages banks from doing business with a range of companies, from payday lenders to gun retailers."

The article talks about the payday loan but does not get into the gun portion of the headline. Where is there more info on that and the "other range" of businesses affected by this program?

I remember reading the stories about how many private gun shops were either forced out of business or came close to it because their banks suddenly closed their accounts due to this program.

The Obama "justice" department threatened the banks and basically forced them to close these accounts or face retaliation.

Real nice.

It wasn't just mom and pops. It was also some pretty big operations that has to switch over to gun friendly banks and loaners. I hope now that this program has ended those same places still don't switch back to mainstream banking in order to get better rates. I would hope that they remember which places sold them out at the drop of a hat.

Glad to hear Chokepoint relegated to the dust bin of history. I wonder what if anything President Trump and Atty. Gen. Sessions will do about operation Fast and Furious? Trump can remove presidential protection and Sessions can prosecute. I haven't heard anything about F and F of late. No one has recused themselves on this subject. Prosecution and jail time for Holder et al on this level would go a long way in putting the word out about all the leaking coming from Washington.
