just curious, who here routinely carries a spare mag or mags.I am still tweaking what I carry and how I carry.it seems to me a little much, and that much more to carry everyday.I have not carried a extra mag so far and feel fairly comfortable with a 8+1 single stack capacity.from what I have read the majority of real self defense cases, few shots are fired.of course I realize a big concern is a multiple attacker scenario or some type of mag failure.maybe I should rethink carrying one.

We once hired an off duty US Marshal for security during a riot. As we prepared for the evening march he asked me how much ammo he would need. I replied probably none... bring whatever youre comfortable with. I think he packed 7 extra .40 cal mags. We needed none.

I carry 15+1 because thats what fits in my Hi Power... I carry a Hi Power because I shoot it well. Sometimes I stash a spare mag in the center console of my car, but not always. When I carry the little Sig P 938 I stash a spare 7 round mag in my pocket for a total of 15 rounds. I have yet to need a single round. Its pretty unlikely that most of us will ever face multiple attackers and should that ever happen it might be best to take cover and figure out some alternate plan.

You should carry whatever you think you need.
Shooting someone is your last resort.
Only you know what you need.

I carry a Glock Model 23 (40 cal). It has 14 rounds in it and I carry at least one 15 round magazine (usually in the left tool packet of my carpenter jeans). If I feel froggy, Might out another on my belt

P938 7+1 and spare 7 in a pocket or on my belt in a Leatherman tool sheath. I don't feel under-equipped.

The spare magazine is more for fixing stoppages than it is about added capacity.

It's said that the main reason to carry an extra mag is for a malfunction. The most common semi auto failures are corrected with a new mag. I typically carry a 17rd g17 mag, in my weak side pocket, when carrying my g19.

I use Houston padded nylon pouches. Very comfortable and not expensive. Like jperson 1 if double stack, 2 if single stack.

One extra, in a Magholder horizontal carrier, as close as possible to the belt buckle on my off side.

Always have an extra 19 round magazine, and on occasion up to 4 extra magazines (for a total of 5).  Sometimes (rarely now) a backup gun with/without extra mags (round count varies with the selected bug).  The mags hold 20, but on occasion they have feeding problems which are cured by removing one round.

I have practiced, although probably not enough at clearing malfunctions.I also use the same mag for my edc that has proved at the range to cycle defense rounds without issue.having said that it probably would be good practice to carry a extra.and if I carried a extra,it would only make sense to practice changing out mags.thanks for your input.

Since I carry a 6 shot 38 spl., I always have 1 speed-loader on me and another near by.

My EDC configuration is a High Cap 9mm DA/SA (Beretta Px4 Subcompact 13+1) and a spare mag backed up by a 9mm Subcompact DAO (Sig Sauer P290RS) and a spare mag for that as well. I started carrying a "reload" as a second pistol to save time...New York Reload.

Since we have these attacks lately at work places and attacks where the active shooter is gunning down as many as possible I started carrying 40 rounds for two guns that can be shared as they have caliber commonality. This way I can arm a second person as well and double our chances.

When was the last time or ever that a non leo needed a second mag in a self-defense? Are you planning on taking out a street gang? Never carry a second mag. Doubt I will regret this.

If I’m carrying my little Kahr pm9 6+1, then I always have another 7 round mag. If I’m carrying my G23 w 14 rounds I only carry a spare if I’m going into a bit riskier territory. I live in a very safe quiet rural area and very rarely get concerned.
I have been known to carry a full-size 1911 .45 or 9mm commander on occasion and always with a spare mag.
Any gun I carry has been shot a lot and proven as reliable as any firearm can be. Nothing is 100% forever but if I can go 500 or more rounds without a failure I’m pretty comfortable.
My full size 1911 .45 was built by rob leatham and I competed with it years ago. Les Baer rebuilt it after 30,000 rounds and I shot it some more. I’m pretty comfortable with it by now.
Only ever had an issue with 2 cheap mags. Took a hammer to them and tossed them.

My view is that at least one spare mag should be carried for the same reason you carry a firearm.  "It's better to have and not need, than to need and not have."

I always carry a spare mag. Mostly in case of a mag failure. But, it is getting crazier out there. More amp doesn’t hurt. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Exactly.  That's why I usually have a primary carry gun, a BUG, and a BBUG (all with extra ammo).  The wife and I were walking together last night, and she asked me to switch to the other side because whatever was in the left, lower pocket of my shorts kept hitting her in the leg and it hurt.  Apparently it doesn't take much .44 SPL (in speed strips) to create a walking issue.

I don't "carry" extra mags but I keep a spare mag for each carry gun in the glove box.

If I'm going to bother carrying, I will bother with extra mags. With a 6+1 pocket 380 I'll carry 2 extra. With a 12 or 15 round double stack 9 I'll carry 1 extra.

I mean mags are so easy to carry compared to the actual firearm, if you're bothering with the gun why not a spare mag?

I carry a spare most of the time. Can't say always, because if I'm just around the house, may not have a spare on me, but they are around the house. Leaving the house, I grab a spare.

Well,I have come to the conclusion I will start throwing a extra mag in my pocket for my 380 and 9 single stacks.although I really don't see myself in a o.k.corral type shootout,I also do not see a downside in doing so.being a Chicago resident, these criminals often do not act alone and some times travel in wolf packs.and then on the expressway I suppose you could be trading shots with some bad guys.also, yourself and a bad guy could both have cover and be trading shots.so thanks to all for the input.
