Educating Chicago’s black gun owners

Dickson “Q” Amoah said he started the Chicago-based 761st Gun Club — named after the famed all black tank battalion that fought Nazis on European battlefields during the Second World War — after seeing a swell of black gun owners after the 2016 election.

“The goal of the 761st is we want to change the perception of the black gun owner within the black community,” Amoah said and explained the club serves as a meeting place for African Americans to share knowledge about firearms, firearms law, and issues relevant to the community.

But at the heart of the club is gun education, particularly for local gun ownership. “What we’ve noticed is that people want to be involved with the firearm but they don’t know what the first step is,” he said. “We want to show them what the FOID card is, how you obtain one, and how you take the concealed carry class.”

Interesting video...thanks for posting.

While I won't be joining, I do appreciate groups like that. I do think there is (or was) a perception that if a black person has a gun, they are either a thug/drug-dealer/gang member, or a police officer. I think the perception has changed over the past couple of years. There were always black gun owners, but I think there has been a surge in a more bold and legal stance as of late. I can say for sure that there are a lot of blacks that are not thugs, but do have guns....but do not have FOIDS. Groups like 761 can really help those folks.

One of my neighbors is black. He has an AR and a CCL. One of my closest friends (another black male) has more guns than I do...I'm still trying to sell him one of my spare uppers. I think prior to 2016, none of us would have ever discussed our gun ownership.

Every gun owning black acquaintance I have skips the FOID. They laugh at me for registering myself with the state so I can have my door kicked when the state turns on us. They all live in Chicago, and they all know that gun charges don't stick to black people in Chicago...they're just used as aggravating charges so the cops can do some arm twisting if you find yourself in trouble. The real down side to their skipping the FOID is they don't ever practice because they can't buy ammo, and people like me who "registered themselves with the state" who can buy ammo aren't willing to risk anything by selling to them. Different strokes for different folks. I prefer my letter of the law ways. They prefer theirs.

Well, your black friends are right. The FOID is very much a registry of people. Just like the Nazis done it.

Ironically, the FOID law was a Daley I tactic to discourage Black gun ownership.

Because when he led the Bridgeport athletic club to burn down the black belt his crew was stopped by black soldiers that had returned from WWI and took up arms. Ever since that day his goal was to disarm black people.

Oh yes, the Daleys always despised black people, particularly ones who made them look like the entitled, politically connected thugs that they were.

The worst kind of racists are the ones who smile in the face of those they hate, then stab them in the back the moment they turn around or prove to be less than subservient.

The Chicago Commission on Human Relations eventually concluded that without these gangs "it is doubtful if the riot would have gone beyond the first clash." It is also clear that Joseph McDonough, patron of the Hamburg Athletic Club and later Daley's political mentor, actively incited the white community at the time of the riots. McDonough was quoted in the press saying that blacks had "enough ammunition . . . to last for years of guerrilla warfare," and that he had seen police captains warning white South Side residents: "For God's sake, arm. They are coming; we cannot hold them." At the City Council, McDonough told police chief John J. Garrity that "unless something is done at once I am going to advise my people to arm themselves for protection."

Was Daley himself involved in the bloody work of the 1919 race riots? His defenders have always insisted he was not, arguing that it would have been more in character for him to be attending to "his studies" or "family affairs" while much of the Irish-Catholic youth of Bridgeport were out bashing heads. But Daley's critics have long "pictur[ed] him in the pose of a brick-throwing thug." It strains credulity, they say, for Daley to have played no part in the riots when the Hamburg Athletic Club was so heavily involved — particularly when he was only a few years away from being chosen as the group's president. Daley's close ties to McDonough, who played an inflammatory role, also argue for involvement. Adding to the suspicions, Daley always remained secretive about the riots, and declined to respond to direct questions on the subject. It was a convenient political response that allowed Daley to play both sides of the city's racial divide: whites from the ethnic neighborhoods could believe that Daley was a youthful defender of the South Side color line, while blacks could choose to believe the opposite.

Daley's role, or lack of role, is likely lost to history, in part because the police and prosecutors never pursued the white gang members who instigated the violence. At the least, it can be said that Daley was an integral member of a youth gang that played an active role in one of the bloodiest antiblack riots in the nation's history — and that within a few years' time, this same gang would think enough of Daley to select him as its leader.

A FOID is not an indication that you own guns. I had one for many years before I bought my first gun. How do your black friends get their guns? They either buy them in private transactions with FOID holders or buy them out-of-state in private transactions. In the latter case, a federal law is being broken. Doesn't this kind of thing basically confirm what the antis are saying?

While shopping at Cabelas in Hammond, I noticed they always ask for your phone number at the checkout. Guy in front of me buying ammo gives his phone number with a non illinois area code and the sale goes through like he was buying candy. My turn comes and I give them my phone number. They ask for my foid, drivers license, and ask if the ammo is for a rifle or pistol. I'm sure that's how non law abiding black gun owners without a foid they get their ammo.

My wife and kids all have FOID cards, but I'm the only one who owns guns. I got them all FOID cards so they can drive my car without worry of removing ammunition from the trunk or loaded magazines from the console- only the gun needs to come out. And if I am not home they can access my gun safe if needed.

Same with my wife. She's never owned a gun or even shot one.

Could it be that the person in front of you was from indiana and is registered, whereas you are coming from out of state to buy ammo?

There is no registration in Indiana or stupid FOID card either. Just the Second Amendment.

Not sure how wise it is for a letter of the law follower to engage people who obviously are anti law.

You'll notice the term "acquaintance." That's not friend, associate, family or business partner.

Outside of that, live and let live. I think the FOID is an unconstitutional infringement. I follow the law because it's the law. It not my place to tell anyone else how to live their life or what risks are worth or not worth taking.

Sure. But if someone from illinois gave them a phone number with an Indiana area code when they ask, how are they to know? So many south siders go just over the border to get gas, booze, cigarettes, do general shopping to save money. I bet they only ask Indiana residents for ID when buying ammo is if they don't look old enough.
